Deck Description

So, basically, this is an article I'm making (kind of inspired by econ mtg) about how Zurgo Helmsmasher is really underrated.

How to Play

So basically, the reason everyone hates Zurgo is because he's a 7/2, which means that he can be killed by shock. My response to that: "Yes, he can, but honestly, MARDU DOESN'T CARE!" See, that's how Mardu works they attack, and they don't really care if they die as long as the get some damage in. So, with Zurgo, you're still getting in 7 damage for 5 mana, BUT if they block, then he'll become a 8/3, which means that he'll be harder to kill. Then, if they DO take it, that's 7 damage! 7 fricking damage! Also, in order to have burn, you have to play red, and not everyone does. AND, he is only susceptible to burn on opponents' turns, and true, he also is susceptible to removal on opponents' turns, but so are all the other Khans, except for Narset, who has hexproof. Also, you could kill Zurgo with bile blight or stuff like that, but in order to do that, you need to play black... anyway, what I'm saying is, you'll still get in at least 7 damage, and he has indestructible during your turn, so blocking him won't kill him, but if you do kill him on your turn, or bile blight or exile him during your turn, then so what, if you're playing real Mardu, you shouldn't really care. So basically, to sum it up, Zurgo is good in Mardu, and he is pretty good by himself, although he isn't the best Khan, he still is better than a lot of people say

Deck discussion for Zurgo is better than you think

It really just depends on the meta. Yes, he is a good card but who doesn't have removal for him? Red has basic burns, black has kill cards, white has plenty of exile, and blue has some control aspects I'm sure it can find a way. (That 2 drop enchantment that taps it down or whatever) It's really just reliant on how much and what type of removal you have at your lgs. I had him dropped on me against my Sultai deck, and he was extremely menacing, but I just kept chump blocking until I drew a Murderous Cut.

Another problem with Zurgo is his mana cost. There's just too many good slots at 5 drops such as Stormbreath Dragon, Sarkhan, Sorin, and to a lesser extent Wingmate Roc. Why would I choose a guy who's big with no evasion over something like these other bombs?

Well, if you're playing a Mardu deck, he would probably be the five drop you choose, because he works well in Mardu, but I do see your point.

I own the 1 Zurgo and when he does hit the battlefield, he smashes. I often find myself saying "Zurgo Smash!" when I attack with him :P

Zurgo is white, so if you build your deck smart, you can include a lot of instants that gives a creature either protection from a colour (God's Willing) or indestructible (Ajani's Presence) for one mana.

So, on his own, Zurgo Smash! once. With support, Zurgo Smash! again.

Alternatively, he can be used the way I use him (when I do draw him), as a lightning rod that smashes for 7 life / smashes a creature. Kind of like a 5 mana sorcery where the opponent is given the choice to either take 7 damaged or sacrifice a creature.

Yeah, he's really awesome, I wish I had more copies of him. I never really considered using God's Willing or Ajani's Presence to give him protection from colors. Good idea! You could also use feat of resistance.

Baaah Zurgo can be annoying yet he is easily destroyed same as the other khans but to that point so can most of any other creature. like mtgel pointed out, you cold be playing much more powerful creatures/spells in a mardu midrange deck and in a mardu aggro build, by the time you have enough mana to cast him, you are probably loosing (as aggro decks run low lands and probably wont be drawing lands every turn) so Zurgo can kick but in sealed and draft, in constructed, he will get removed or out raced.

While I'm against Zurgo in highly competitive play, being a measly dollar doesn't mean he's bad. He's just been printed too much with duel decks and isn't used by professionals who, unfortunately, get their decklists copied from lower level players. He isn't a bad card, he's the best 5 drop at a dollar.

nat can u just realize that freaking ANAFENZA AND SURRAK AND SIDISI are better than zurgo? Or the entire clan for that matter. At least they mind their own business & dont mess wit the oher clans. The whole reason this Temur/mardu war startd is because mardu invaded the temur camp.

Don't hate on Mardu just because they are different. They're lifestlye is to go attack other people, and frankly, it works, because they're not starving or dead. And Xander, yes, they don't care what happens to their "freaking khan" and finnian, I never said that Zurgo is the best. What I'm saying is that most people think he's a piece of crap so I'm trying to explain why he isn't, and also, I'm talking about the cards, not the storyline.

yeah i get it. but still.... do they really have to go kill everybody else to survive?? Is that really a lifestyle??

0

Yes, it is, it is how Mardu works. Telling Mardu to stop attacking people would be like telling Sultai to stop making zombies.
