Deck Description

Are you bored? Does Magic: The Gathering feel old and vapid? Got any useless bucks in your bank account? Ladies and Gentlemen, I have solution.
Use your bank account on nearest MTG marketplace website and buy some cheap cards, craft a deck, and challenge your friends! To double the fun, ask your friend to create such a deck too!
The Budget Decks -series is meant for your free time! These are meant to inspire you, and the deck's cost is meant to be low!
(Between 10 and 20 bucks.)

How to Play

Are you a new player who has just got into Magic: The Gathering?
Have you thought about trying out the new mechanics of Guilds of Ravnica set? Maybe even interested in playing black and blue? You wish to try buying some cheaper cards first?

If you answered "Yes!" to at least two of the questions above, then this deck just might be made for you!

This deck attempts to utilize the new Dimir keyword "Surveil", which allows you to look at the top cards of your library, then put any amount of them back to your library and rest into your graveyard. It sure makes looking for stuff you need a whole lot of easier!
- Dimir Spybug and Thoughtbound Phantasm are you main win conditions. They will grow up to be huge in no time if your opponent can't deal with them!
- Cards like Sinister Sabotage and Never Happened make it easier to keep your main creatures alive.
- Etrata can be your secondary winning condition. Since there are a whole three copies of her in the deck, you can easily bump into one while surveilling.

Deck discussion for Budget Decks: Dimir Newbie

Hi,

If I got the dimir guild kit from GRN, what would be logical singles to pull from that to upgrade this deck with?
Keeping it standard legal as I want to try going to a lgs and give it a whirl.

There ain't many cards in the guild kit that are standard legal, but a couple of cards you should keep an eye out for are Blood Operative, Mission Briefing and maybe even Discovery // Dispersal. Also, if you wish to translate the deck into a bit more late-game oriented, you could try out Nightveil Predator and perhaps Disdainful Stroke.

Depending on what you need / what you don't need, you could try cutting out Never Happened. I think that Never Happened might be just a bit too slow for this deck, since this deck depends on aggressively-costed creatures and synergy with surveil-mechanic. If you decided to remove three copies of Never Happened, you could include Blood Operative, Mission Briefing and Discovery // Dispersal.

If you decide not to obtain the guild kit, some cards I suggest to buy either from online or from the nearest game store are:

- Cast Down. A powerful killing spell that handles most of the problems around.
- Curious Obsession. A card that lets you benefit a lot from small evasive creatures. You should grab some before they roll out of standard.
- Doom Whisperer. Very expensive, but incredibly powerful late-game beater. One or two could fit this deck.
- Mausoleum Secrets. It has some nice synergy with the surveil-mechanic, since you can just keep chucking less useful creature cards in your graveyard to fuel up the effect of Mausoleum Secrets.
- River's Rebuke. Once you get to resolve this card at the right moment, you'll probably win the game. Downsides are that the card costs 6 mana to cast and that it won't stay in the standard for long.

Thank you for the elaborate answer my friend!
I will sideboard Blood Operative, Mission Briefing and Discovery//Dispersal and give the deck as is a run at my lgs fnm.

Are you planning to follow suit with the rest of the guilds coming with RNA?
Love your guides BTW!

I'm happy to hear someone around here still checks out my content!
And yeah, I'm planning on creating a couple of simple decks to demonstrate the new mechanics as soon as the new set rolls out!

Thank you, they're brilliant!

Also to update on the performance of this deck: i have been running it online in arena, and it is very consistent.
I mostly lose to boards that go very wide, or against decks that are heavily focused on white "prison" enchantments but other than that, most games feels like a cakewalk.
If my opponent is not flooding me with weenies, but has big scary dudes, they get either countered, removed og bounced. And most of these options comes with the added bonus of strengthening my spybug/phantasm and it lets me surveil. I am seriously impressed with this decks performance.
