Deck Description

Are you bored? Does Magic: The Gathering feel old and vapid? Got any useless bucks in your bank account? Ladies and Gentlemen, I have solution.
Use your bank account on nearest MtG marketplace website and buy some cheap cards, craft a deck, and challenge your friends! To double the fun, ask your friend to create such a deck too!
The Budget Decks -series is meant for your free time! These are meant to inspire you, and deck's value is meant to be low! (Between 10 and 20 bucks.)

How to Play

Inspired by nijapl3dge3rz.

Okay... This is something like Abzan-Mardu-Rakdos +1/+1 counter deck for Modern?
Umm... It is a bit random though.

The deal around here is simple:
-Cast some aggressive sonovabitches with Unleash. They are mean early gamers, so your opponent better watch out!
-When you have some Unleash in play, cast some creatures with Outlast. They all have also another ability that allows you to give some sweet abilities to your Unleashed creatures. As example, Abzan Falconer allows you to give flying to all your beatsticks! Fun, no?
-While you have some meat in play, destroy opposition with cards like Mortify, Terminate and Blightning to make way for your attacking horde.

...and the most important of all, remember to have fun!

I don't know... I think that you will already kill all the biggest threats with the kill spells, and your creatures can handle the rest by themselves. I don't think Deathtouch is required. I just fit it to the sideboard.

Thanks a lot for suggesting though.

Nightblade and bond-kin together make all your creatures into a knockoff master of cruelties. That is not something opponents want to see. I've done it with my own abzan deck and my friends absolutely HATE that combo

Using Unleash as a free way to get +1/+1 counters that then trip off those "Each creature you control with a +1/+1" effects is brilliant. Splatter Thug is my favorite Unleash creature, but he might be redundant here with the Ainok Bond-Kin.

...and I agree with Splatter Thug. He is awesome, but guess he doesn't fit here.

On another note, I think that first strike is probably the weakest of your 1/1 counter bonus buddies. I would think that it would be better to have a higher chance of getting flying and lifelink than first strike on the ground, but first strike in the sky would still be good too. Maybe just drop two Bond Kin to get another Falconer and Battle Priest?

0
Posted 11 December 2014 at 17:32

I prefer First Strike over both Lifelink and Flying. It is just damn good ability.
I especially love the synergy between Ainok Bond-Kin and Thrill-Kill Assassin.

Thanks a lot for suggesting though.

Can't underestimate first strike in an aggro deck. It can easily mean the difference between having your dudes killed by the blockers they run into and having them mow down the blockers so they have a clean shot next time. The falconer and battle priest are also more mana, so they'd slow the deck down if their numbers went up. This deck feels pretty aggro to me, or at least that's what I'd want it to be if I was playing it, so I wouldn't want to slow it down. If I dropped anything it would probably be the battle priest because I don't value lifelink as much when playing aggro. I think I might put the Nightblade in there if it was my deck for the awesome first strike plus deathtouch combo that someone mentioned above.

That was me. Yeah I agree with the master of cruelties ability combo. That in aggro is a nightmare

Great deck building idea. I do not want to step on the idea behind the deck, however with the budget idea aside: slip a few Triskelions in there with a few Mephidross Vampires and you got yourself a game ender. :)

not really related to this deck, but i need a ruling on this. havok festival says you can't gain life. would tapping the tree of redemption's ability to swap 1 life with 13 count as gaining life in this way? i'm considering a jund multiplayer deck where nobody has double-digit life for more than a few turns, but i prefer not to be at the same disadvantage to a single lightningbolt.

0
Posted 16 December 2014 at 17:31

No. Tree of Redemption's effect is a form of life gain. If an effect does not specify that life is gained or lost, but states that you change your life total in ANY way, it is considered as either life gain or life loss. This also means that things that trigger from life gain or loss would also apply, so if say you went down, it could trigger an opponent's Bloodchief Ascension, or if you went up it could trigger Rhox Faithmender or Archangel of Thune. Hope this helps!

0
Posted 16 December 2014 at 18:43

I agree with drakeraenes.
If your life would increase with Tree of Redemption's ability while Havoc Festival is in play, it doesn't rise instead. (The Tree's toughness still becomes the amount of your life.)
Though you can still use Tree of Redemption to lower your life amount if you have more than 13 life... Except there ain't much sense in it.

or want to save a massive chunk of life for later. though that probably wouldn't be very effective. still possible that someone might try.

0

man. anybody have a good deck based on havoc festival i could see? rakdos seems very risky to play due to all the things that harm you along with everybody else. the safest alternative i can find is some enchantment or artifact that cuts down on attackers that could be needing to be blocked by carnage gladiator or something to that effect.

0
Posted 17 December 2014 at 18:01

The key to passing with Rakdos is knowing that you are going to be hurt, and making sure your opponent takes more than you. It's not always easy, but it can be done. I run two havoc festival in my Rakdos deck because if I get to the point that I can cast it, then chances are I can do some serious damage with it. Now I have lost because if it as well, but it was literally by the skin of their teeth that my opponent lives.

0
Posted 17 December 2014 at 21:56

You could go old school Rakdos and use hellbent and ensnaring bridge to keep you from being attacked. Just a thought

0
Posted 17 December 2014 at 21:57

yeah, true. the old versions of the guilds always seem to combo well with the old version. graft gives counters to creatures that say "when this creature gets a counter do this" and dredge mills your scavenge. i wish ravnica, city of guilds was legal in extended.

0

They're not as fast to get aggro as your Unleash guys but they have a bit more staying power. Not hard to have a 2/3 and a 2/2 first strike vigilance on turn 2, and turn 3 give them both another bump or flying/trample.

And they block!
