Defensive Standard (M12) mill deck, attempts to take control of the game and tries to take down opponent's key cards through opponent's library filtration. Comments on speeding up the deck while remaining defensive is appreciated, as this is the fastest I could tune it to thus far. Tested it with a few Standard aggro decks and it's currently at 50/50. Update 22 Mar 2012: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thrown in a few Nihil Spellbombs for the cantrips and graveyard toasting. Replaced Praetor's Grasp for lack of versatility with Surgical Extraction instead. Moved in a Sheoldred for mid to late game control. Replace Selhoff Occultist and Sheoldred with Dissipates if opponent's playing creature-less. Update 26 Mar 2012: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i) Removed Curse of the Bloody Tome and replaced with Witchbane Orbs. Use of Witchbane suggested by armageddon101 ii) Put both Witchbanes and Grafdigger's Cage to Sideboard. There were times I wished I was drawing a Black Sun rather. Cards removed: - 1 x Jace's Erasure - 2 x Witchbane Orb (Moved to Sideboard) - 1 x Grafdigger's Cage (Moved to Sideboard) - 1 x Thought Scour Cards added: - 2 x Blue Sun's Zenith - 1 x Go for the Throat - 1 x Doom Blade - 2 x Dissipate Trying out to see how Jace's Erasure + Blue Sun's synergy works out. Blue Sun gives re-usable card advantage while Erasure helps mill at the same time.

Interesting deck. I have some questions though. 1. Why is dissipate a sideboard? 2. Only two counter spells in the main deck? That, doesn't seem like enough to keep your deck consistent. 3. What strategies do you employ to protect yourself from speedy decks designed to win turn 3-5?

1 & 2. I wasn't considering this deck to be counter-based but rather going pure mill. Playtesting with 3 Dissipates rather than Manaleak against fast decks make me unable to get rid of a say, T2 Honor of the Pure. Manaleaks were put in as a soft countermeasure for things like T3 Quicksilver->T4 Emrakul. I'm thinking of swapping 2 Curses for Manaleaks or Dissipates seeing how the 2 Curses don't really appear in most of my games effectively. Or might there be suggestions that I've missed out? 3. I used to put 3 x Go For The Throat and 3 x Doomblades, but replaced them with table wipers like Black Sun and Finale instead. So far most of my games with fast decks were decided with whether I had a Black Sun in hand to wipe creatures fast enough. Can't say it fares decently enough with burn decks though. I'm considering throwing in a few Ratchet Bombs, but I'm apprehensive about it, considering how it costs about $8-10 each here and Mirrodin getting rotated out in a few months' time. Are there any methods that I might be missing out in terms of dealing with fast decks?
Well, Rue, what about witchbane in your sideboard for burn decks? to be honest it works against other decks too and is the defensive style you want.
Hmm...that's a good idea. I'll put it in the main deck instead, replacing both Curses and bring it for a few runs to see how it turns out. Never came across that card before, thanks for the suggestion, heh.
