Deck discussion for Merfolk - Chalice

nice i like!! but counter spell…hmm i would like to see daze especially with a 14 island count.. but no vial so ok.also trickster is tough because she does little turn 3 plus after opponent has already cracked all his fetches. i would rather run more control or 2 marrow rejerrys if only to tap they're shit because ur casting all ur folk anyways. also don't u just fuckin hateee abrupt decay?

Haha yes, I hate Abrupt decay. It is largely responsible for the recent fall of Merfolk, but its still a good deck. Merfolk is pretty supported creature type so we should eventually see the deck rise again with new tech. We really need a Merfolk lord or other playable effect that gives hexproof or shroud. Then we wouldn't have to worry about Abrupt Decay or Swords to plowshare. We may have to dream on that one for a while.

I understand counter spell isn't idea but it seems necessary in the chalice and no vial strategy. Its really important that I get my second land down as fast as possible to get Chalice on 1. Additionally it is nice to have a hard counter that is relevant after the 1st 1-3 turns. Plus we still have Cursecatcher.

Cosi's Trickster has had mixed performance but I still have generally liked him. I have gotten him pretty big very quickly if he is dropped on turn 1, especially after a couple lords get into play. He also helps get the mana curve down a bit since I am missing Vials. That's the main reason I have him in marrow's place.

Either way I can't say that this build is strictly better than the more classic build. It largely depends on the meta. When U/R Delver became so dominant the Chalice strategy was a must just to have a chance. We will see how things shift post Treasure Cruise ban.

Thanks for the comment!

Your right marrow is expensive without vial. And curse catcher is a great bolt and draw deterrent.Nice points!

Anytime I can chat with a fellow folk lover is a good time. You make some great points I have no rebuttal lol . Till merfolk rises again my friend! fight the fish fight
