Card thoughts: 3 Turn // Burn MB: This card was incredible the entire tournament. It killed an aetherling, a couple of d-demons (with the Turn portion only) and burned a lot of pack rats. I have gone up to 3 and removed the MB mortars. Aetherling: Not in the original list. Does require heavier blue hence the one-of but is a pretty tough creature to handle for decks built to beat big dumb fatties. Also can attack planeswalkers. Ral Zarak: An experiment, but he replaces a burn spell main. Can try tapping a blue or black mana when opponent leaves up 3 and untap a land before combat. Xenagod: Not in original list. Added to help in the control matchups, beef creature count, and not be a dead god draw like a 3rd Nylea might be. Polis Crusher: We want some enchantment removal but don't want to lower creature count. He will be replacing polukranos in the MB for control matchups. Also very good against hexproof. Pithing Needle: Probably naming Elspeth every time it is drawn. Skylashers: Continue to get beat by mono-blue, so it's time to bring out the specific answers. This + Mistcutters + Bow + Mortars is about as much as a green deck can throw against it. Bow: A lifegain spell for RW burn and a little help in the blue matchup.
The idea is to offer the opponent two targets: our card advantage or a fatty threat. BTE , Garruk, and Prophet can help serve two cards a turn, such as a planeswalker and a threat. We can win through card advantage (garruk, kiora, courser, etc) or by sticking a bigger threat than anyone else and swinging. Do remember that for 3 mana you can kill a D-Demon with an elvish mystic (Turn) but not if they have counters on the demon. We almost never want to give demons counters -- there are enough reach creatures and removal spells to deal with them. Elspeth is the deadliest card this deck can face. In any deck playing her, you want to bring in every trample card we have (polis crusher) and the pithing needle. Do not remove Nylea. Play her at the safest opportunity, she is invaluable. We can handle aetherling with fogs (turn//burn) but elspeth will brick our attack and win very quickly. Turn 2 pack rat is also pretty deadly as usual, we can mitigate this with turn//burn, a little luck with Nykthos and a huge threat, and otherwise racing it. Mono-blue is very tough to beat. We're removing all the cards at the top of our curve for our pro-blue creatures and removal spells.
