How to Play

Winning quickly with your Maralen of the Mornsong deck often requires leveraging the deck's inherent synergy between resource denial, oppressive board states, and the ability to tutor for key pieces. Here’s a step-by-step guide to achieve a quick victory:

1. Lock the Game Down
Key Cards:
Maralen of the Mornsong
Opposition Agent
Nether Void
Winter Orb
Smokestack
Sphere of Resistance
Deploy Maralen of the Mornsong and Opposition Agent as soon as possible. This combination prevents opponents from benefiting from Maralen’s tutoring ability while you gain access to any card they attempt to search for.

Follow up with Winter Orb, Sphere of Resistance, or Smokestack to restrict your opponents’ resources further.
Use cards like Contamination or Infernal Darkness to prevent opponents from accessing colored mana.
2. Assemble a Win Condition
Once the board is locked, pivot to one of your win conditions:

Exsanguinate or Torment of Hailfire:

Ramp into massive mana with Cabal Coffers, Nirkana Revenant, Crypt Ghast, and Jet Medallion.
Use a large Exsanguinate or Torment of Hailfire to drain life or devastate opponents’ resources.
Gray Merchant of Asphodel (Gary):

Leverage your devotion to black from permanents like Oppression, Necrogen Mists, and Erebos, God of the Dead to deal massive damage with Gary when it enters the battlefield.
Bolas’s Citadel:

Use Bolas’s Citadel to churn through your deck, sacrificing permanents for life with cards like Smokestack or Phyrexian Scriptures to manage the board.
Combine with cards like Tangle Wire or Bottomless Pit to maintain control while generating value.
3. Deny Options and Maintain Control
Use discard effects like Oppression, Necrogen Mists, and Liliana of the Veil to ensure opponents can’t recover.
Counteract graveyard strategies with Leyline of the Void, Planar Void, or Relic of Progenitus.
Sample Opening Play:
Turn 1-2: Ramp aggressively with Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, Jet Medallion, or Arcane Signet.
Turn 3: Cast Maralen of the Mornsong.
Turn 4: Play Opposition Agent and lock opponents out of searching their libraries.
Turn 5: Deploy resource denial cards like Winter Orb, Contamination, or Smokestack to solidify control.
Turn 6: Tutor for a win condition like Exsanguinate, Torment of Hailfire, or Gray Merchant of Asphodel and close the game.
With the right opening hand and sequencing, you can effectively lock out opponents by Turn 4-5 and position yourself for a quick victory by Turn 6-7.
