Deck Description

wow... it actually made it to the upcoming list...

time to update a bit...

changes from last (30/7)

-1 Adaptive automato
-1 spellskite
+2 Phantasmal dragon

ideas and thoughts behind the cards:

adaptive automaton: solid lord (of anytype, here illusions... without that anoying sideeffect)
spellskite: might not protect illusions, but still protects lord of the unreal...
phantasmal bear: 2/2 for [u]... cheap beater that only gets stronger... its not goblin guide, but its a one drop beater
phantasmal dragon: 5/5 flying beater for 4 mana...
lord of the unreal: +1/+1 and hexproof for illusions.. must have
phantasmal image: clone for 2 mana? awesome... also, clone a lord of the unreal, you get a 3/3 hexproof...
halimar depths: scry effect.. good as first land when i start.. usefull later... only running 2 as i dont like to much "enters tapped" lands...
scalding tarn: fetching and trimming
tectonic edge: all those animation lands that still roams...
intro the roil: bounce permenents and card draw
counterspells: counter things and stuff...
divination: card draw...
ponder/preordain: must have in decks running blue...

the sideboard is still work in progress...
grand architect: boost blue creatures and gives mana ramp for artifacts.. like wurmcoil...
wurmcoil: awesome card...
redirect: ... i see potential, but up for debate...
flashfreeze: vulakut...
spellskite: since i only have 2 mainboard, im thinking having the rest in sideboard if needed...

thinking about adding phyrexian metamorph to sideboard aswell as hex parasite...

Deck discussion for Illusions for FNM?

Its a good build, but there.is only one problem, if u target any of the illusions s with grand architrct u have to sac them due to the illusions card txt, I would remove the architects and put in a couple jace, memory adepts for sheer back up plan.

i have no need to target them since they are already blue :)

automaton on the other hand...

i was thinking about jace... but at 5 mana, he kinda blows the manacurve : / would go with beleren if any (mindsculptor not being an option)

Add a couple big artifacts to make use of architect's mana ability. My version focuses on getting out Wurmcoil Engine as early as turn 3(cloning it in following turns with Phantasmal Image/Phyrexian Metamorph).

DarthxMTGx the illusions wont be targeted ergo no sacrificing them. Grand Archtiect says other blue creatures get +1/+1 it doesnt say target blue creature gets +1/+1. And same with his second ability where you tap an untapped blue creature you control to get 2 colorless mana for artifact spells...it wont sacrifice the illusions because it isnt targeting the illusion. That way your Illusions get a +1/+1 boost from Grand Architect pretty helpful with the Lord of the Unreal out.

I like your deck design - i like your inclusion of the Automatons - good idea - If you want some sideboard options to consider you can check out what i run in my Illusion deck (just some ideas).

A lot of people really struggle to develop a good sideboard because they don't really know what to take out of the main deck without destroying the design concept or synergies. Its sometimes best to research common deck types you play against and work out those cards that provide synergy with your current deck and focus on limiting your opponent. For instance what is your idea behind the Wurmcoil Engine?

the idea behind the wurmcoil is that with grand architect i can throw it out as early as turn 3... giving me a solid beater with lifegain and deathtouch... also in that case i'd prob make the switch with the automatons (ie 2-3 out for same amount of grand architect, and 1 bear + the last automaton for 2 wurmcoils...

Oh OK, but shouldn't that sideboard be for competing against certain deck types? Or are you just going to use it as a strategy variant? Anyway you are welcome to have a look at my sideboard to see what you think.

like said my sideboard is still work in progress and i think it was elsalvador who suggested the wurmcoild since the original deck started out with two grand architects...

otherwise i think it would be against something like burn / BR vamp aggro which has a lot of targeting spells and indirect dmg (highborn + bloodghast)... in that matchup i'd apreciate the lifegain and P/T of the wurmcoil...

Sure i can see your point. I have been playing around with ponder and preordain in my own deck and preordain seems much better so far. So i have put 4 into my deck and discarded ponder altogether. How have you found running both?

both cards are good in thier own way... ponder lets you look at an extra card and decide how they should be on top, shuffle if none of the cards are usefull and draw a card... preordain lets you only look at two, if they both are useless at the time you still have the luck of the draw... so you're drawing on luck no matter what... and sine you cant run 5-7 of either of the cards i run a few of each... also once preordain cycles out, ponder will be the playset to run... a bit the same with halimar depts... scry a few cards to get what you want, but still not something i want to many of since its a enter tapped land... good for first land if i start and later once i get the 4-5 i need to cast everything and still have mana open for a mana leak

This will be the last weekend you will be able to play this in standard unless you change some cards out.
All of these are phasing out with the new set Innisrad:
Into the Roil
Spell Peirce
Halimar Depths
Scalding Tarn
Tectonic Edge
Preordain

That is 18 cards to replace maindeck and 1 sideboard.
