thanx!!*hugs*...im new to magic & im getting my ass whooped in tournaments i just wanted a deck that could hold up against the tough guys....i know its far from perfect but if i could win just ONE game w/ it this weekend ill b a happy lil girl scout!!! :0D im totally open to any suggestions that would give this deck some muscle ;0) *winks* thanx again 4 ur support!!
Honest advice. I have never played but 1 tournament (just a group of friends, not anything official). But this is what I know: see who is winning the tournaments and look at what types of decks they are using. Then you build a deck that you think can beat their decks. For example, if the winning players are using blue control decks...then make yourself a fast red burn deck.If they are winning with decks with a lot of creatures in them...then put creature destruction in your deck.If they are winning with direct burn...then add in lifegain to your deck. Taking a small guess...but since this deck has so much flying creature hate...i am assuming that you are playing against a lot of people who have flying creatures. I don't play Modern...and really can't offer that many card suggestions. I might suggest taking out about 6 of your creatures and adding 6 pump up cards like Overwhelming Stampede or another card that pumps up your creatures. Or...maybe take 6 of the creatures out and add some drawing power or card searching power. Just...have fun! Ultimately that is my advice. http://www.mtgvault.com/puschkin/decks/puschkin-please-help-me/Go there. Puschkin loves to critique decks!! If you can stand him ripping you a new one, he will help make your deck better. Just go to his deck, and ask for advice.Good luck!
XOXO!!Thank you soooooo much!! I will ask him for advice and definitely take out creatures to add more pump it up cards!
Asceticism and vines of vastwood could help protect your creatures. Cavern of souls is useful against counters.
This deck is pretty good, and I have an idea: you can embrace the flying hate idea and add cards that give your opponents flying, just so you can destroy them. This may result in you having to add blue, but it could definitely be worth it.
This looks like a decent mid-game elf deck with burn as a secondary late-game option that would do really well in casual and multiplayer. There are lots and lots of ways this deck becomes stronger the longer the game continues. Problem is that in tournaments, you just won't have that time to develop. And while I personally like Llanowar Sentinels for example, they are nothing more than cute. These days you can get monsters like Brimaz for 3 mana, so Llanowar Sentinels just don't cut the mustard anymore. Your current deck structure: Turn 1: Cast a Manaelf.Turn 2: Cast a 3-mana-elfTurn 3: Cast 2 elfs, one costing 3 and one costing 1 manaTurn 4: Produce extra elves using abilities or trick.Turn 5: Try to overrun your opponentWhich is fine if you are fighting a goldfish that doesn't hit back. One thing that will happen in tournaments often: They'll Plowshare, Lightning Bolt, Disfigure etc. your mana elf. If that happens you'll do nothing on turn 2, get one of your 3-mana-elves on turn 3 who has nobody else to pump. The situation gets worse if you don't have a manaelf in your starting hand. In that case you will do nothing turn 1 AND 2 and whatever you play turn 3 will eat the bolt/StP/whatever, leaving you with nothing on the table. So, first thing to do would be add some casting cost 2 elves to smooth out the mana curve. There are many options:Leaf Gilder supports the Fireball part of the deck as well as some of the pumping abilities (Priests of Titania or Rofellos would be better but you are aiming for modern, right? Safehold Elite would be a very solid 2-drop that can block twice and thus buy you time. Thornweald Archer is also a very nasty drop but prone to removal spells. However, Viridian Emissary is probably what you really want here. This guy is happy to block, hopefully taking an enemy creature down with him, because that will grant you another land. He can fetch basic mountains, so you could go with less duals.Cards to take out: Viridian Emissary should definately replace the Wood Elves. Elvish Promenade should go since it is just a "win more" card if you are already about to win but contributes nothing if things are going bad. And, as sad as it is, the Llanowar Sentinels should make room for their more efficient cousins and wait for the casual version of this deck. Then, when playing tournaments, you might find out that opponents like to attack your resources. 18 lands plus all the land fetching and manaelves seems reasonably, however, you are running non-basic lands. I haven't played Modern but I know from Legacy that non-basics are hit with all kind of stuff. Now, the main culprit is Wasteland and that isn't modern legal, I just want to warn you that maybe 18 lands isn't enough and that you should go to 20. You have enough ways to make good use of access mana so I doubt this would hurt.---------------------------------------Finally some words about your situation (being female and trying to set foot in Magic tournaments).First off, I like your attitude, you are not intimidated ot discouraged and want to show them. However, let that not blind you with rage. You'll need a cool head. You can even use it to your advantage. Here is some advice:* You will get underestimated which is always a plus. Never be shy to ask noob questions. You could even play dumb on purpose.* Underestimation is one thing, the other is that many males will feel the urge to help you or to go soft on you. So, if you pull the right strings, look cute and play the damsel in distress, you might find yourself in a nice position where your opponents will galantly allow you to take back moves, give you tips etc. Flirting just a little bit actually helps. Not that I recommend doing such a thing ;) But don't combine this tactic with playing dumb.* Do NOT try to piss anybody off. Do NOT make gender a topic, don't complain about how males treat you and don't brag much if you win. Stay humble and just smile. Try to make normal conversations. Talk about Game of Thrones or Magic decks and strategies or tell stories about the last time you got drunk or whatever people talk about in your area and age. This is the best way to get accepted, to make friends and to find regular gaming partners.Generally put, those male players are like spiders: They fear you more than you fear them^^ It's sad but many of them are just insecure and thus don't like it if a female tries to break into their territory. But be assured that most of them also secretly enjoy the presence of females - as longs as they aren't annoying. Hence my tips above.
That's some good advice right there.MTG humor, http://cardboard-crack.com
