Deck Description

The rat is back. With the now infamous return of the Pack Rat and the ability to generate rats quickly and easily, a tribal rat deck is possible in standard. At the top of the rat heap is the Ogre Slumlord who breeds rats with notorious practices. If an Ogre Slumlord and one other nontoken creature are faced with a Supreme verdict, one thing is for sure: a rat will survive!

This deck keeps it very simple. Get rats onto the field and rush your opponent. And what follows rats? Death. The deck is heavy on removal, but seems pretty decent for casual play in MTGO.

How to Play

Just throw some rats out there and remove anything that gets in their way.

Deck discussion for Rodentia

I recently played a similar deck and had a lot of trouble with very fast aggro red based decks. The would start with an unleased cackler and burn the rats with pillar of flame, searing spear, bonfires or late game brimstone volleys. By turn four Hellrider was on the field and swinging in with friends. Ogre slumlord did not get onto the field until turn five and by then the match was basically over. I can suggest a couple of cards that did help, tragic slip and Immortal Servitude. Good Luck.

Sounds like your opponent had some pretty sweet draws if he was able to get his turn 1 cackler, turn 4 hellrider and had the proper directs along the way to keep you down. Were you able to get your Ravenous Rats or Drainpipe Vermin out early? The discards early on can be helpful.

The red deck was running four copies of Hellrider and cacklers and didn't seem to be that distrupted when hit by ravenous rats/drainpipe vermin. Another red/black deck I struggled against was quite happy to let creatures die as he was playing blood artists and Falkenrath Nobles and late in the game Exquisite Blood. If the board got too crowded he would then board wipe with mutilate or killing wave.
I like the idea of the deck and I would like to see how it evolves but I do think it has proplems against red aggro. Another card I thought that might help is Desecration Demon. I know it is not a rat but it does give some early heavy hitting. In addition if Ogre Slumlord is on the field you could get some additional rats from your opponent sacrificing creatures.

Hey I'm working on a Rat Deck myself. I would suggest adding in Immortal Servitude as a way to counter control/removal decks. Your main rats are all 2CMC making for a fairly cheap way to undo an entire games worth of removal. I'll post a link to my deck soon when I finish it up.
