Deck Description

Creatures are overrated...

Glacial Chasm will save you from just about everything other than a life loss deck. There are eight cards that can fetch the land as well. If you absolutely have to, you can even sacrifice your first Chasm by playing a second, to basically reset the upkeep cost.

Consume Spirit and Drain Life can help alleviate the cumulative upkeep life loss, as well as being your primary win-cons.

Pretty straight-forward. Play Glacial Chasm (if you need to), kill your opponent.

Deck discussion for Creatureless Mono Black!!

I don't think the Glacial Chasm will work too well for protection, considering it kills you by the 4th turn you have it out. Maybe find something else to save you?

i agree. considering that you may have taken some damage before you get it out, it may even kill you the third round it's out. everything apart from aggro decks will just sit back and wait till you cant afford the upkeep anymore and the decks that cant afford that are likely to have damaged you already before you got glacial chasm out leaving you 2 or 3 rounds to finish them off - probably one more because of your life gain.
if you want to sit back and ignore their creatures you might want to consider adding white and peacekeeper or at least using one of those cards like norn's annex, crawl space etc.
finally, i think 6 cards (including tutors) of such a necessary card isnt sufficient, you will end up taking mulligans way too often

I think you guys are missing the point. You obviously only play Glacial Chasm to clinch the win, and unless you have no idea what you are doing whatsoever, you will not die from it. EVER. You can simply drop another one and blow up your original if the upkeep gets too crazy, but this shouldn't ever happen.

And about the odds, including tutors, it's 10 cards. 4 Demonic Tutors, 4 Expedition Maps, and 2 Glacial Chasms. I rarely have to mulligan with this deck. The lack of Glacial Chasm in my opening hand has certainly NEVER (not once) made me take a mulligan; I don't even necessarily use Demonics/Expeditions Maps to grab Glacial Chasm, either - it's basically an extremely effective fail-safe.

So in conclusion, first off you don't play a Glacial Chasm early enough to where your opponent can just sit back and let it kill you. Secondly, sitting back will mean DEATH unless they are running counters/Leyline of Sanctity.

I considered Norn's, Crawl Space and the like, but it's just not happening with this deck. This is pure mono black. It honestly works out extremely well, and FAST considering the most powerful spells in it cost around 6 mana. Just play test it. If you can pilot it correctly (super-easy), then it is very potent.

Thank you for the comments though! I do appreciate the feedback!

I've changed the description a bit to better fit what I intended to say about this deck.

I can appreciate a deck like this. You're using black as it is intended--brutal for everyone involved.

I believe Tainted Aether would be very comfortable in this deck--more so than Temporal Extortion. While I love that card and use it in many of my mono black decks, I don't believe it helps you a great deal here. It could even hurt you if you Glacial Chasm is out. Other than that, it's difficult to make suggestions without radically changing the nature of the deck.

Wow good call on Tainted Aether, I haven't seen that card in a while! Perfect for a creature-less deck. And you are spot-on about Temporal Extortion, it's actually taken me face to face with defeat or sat dead more times than I'd care to think about, no one EVER pays the life for it haha.

Thanks for the comment, it definitely helped out!

This is a very cool deck. I like your mono black decks a lot- I could never do straight black properly!

And Bubbling Muck. Never heard of that card before, simply amazing. Black gets Dark Ritual AND that card? And Lake of the Dead, and Cabal Coffers, and Urborg.... lakjdfkkdfjkl

Thanks for the comment!

Black has some amazing mana acceleration. Dark Ritual blew my mind when I first found out about it long ago, and I just stumbled upon Bubbling Muck not even a month ago. Combine them, and this deck plays out at blazing speed. I'm hooked on mono black right now!

When I gave you that suggestion, I got an idea for a Manland deck using Tainted Aether. I would really appreciate some help with it.
