Deck Description

Note: Description reads like a timeline of significant changes.
Wanted to try out Death's Shadow in my Grixis shell as Grixis deals it's self plenty of damage without the need to "bolt" one's own face.

The deck is pretty stock besides the fact that is running only 17 lands. With 13 cantrip effects it is easy to reach a critical landmass. It does feel even more like walking on a knife edge though as land light openers happen more often.

SB choices
With Affinity on the rise I much prefer Kozilek's Return and Tendrils over Anger of the Gods as they are easier to cast and hits Etched Champion while still dealing with Voice and Finks. Tendrils is also a slight nod towards dredge and Return also has some use against a EOT CoCo while still messing up Elves. Two sweepers in the board is a must with all the Humans running wild right now. Staticaster is just bonkers in the right matchup and I'd run more if they'd raise the number of avaliable SB slots.
EE over pretty much anything as it hits pesky permanents like Chalice and Bridge. It also handles piles of Souls and Empty the Warrens tokens.
By Force has been playing like a customizable Shatterstorm out of the board and I'm loving it but is likely occupying one of the flex spots in the Board.
Rejection has dropped in my evaluation over the past few month's as Eldrazi Tron and Lantern have declined in meta % and I'm tempted to cut them all but when it is good it is very good and with Lantern winning PTRIX there will likely be some more artifact decks around...
Last Hope/ Veil split because of the value of the Last Hope buyback, and the need for more weenie control.

I started with playing triple Surgical, (not in love with Spellbomb), as somewhat of a local meta call as the T1 fetch, Thoughtseize into Surgical, fetch, Scour + big delve critter and locked and loaded for Shadows T3 bulldozes a lot of decks. With Dredge being squeezed and new CoCo combo not being GY based I trimmed the 3rd Surgical for a Rakdos Charm targeting Affinity while still hedging. The swap was fine as it upgraded a niche slot to a more rounded card but Charm is still a card that can end up sitting untouched in the board for a whole tournament. That said, if you expect a room full of artifacts then I'd use this slot for By Force.

As the meta has evolved I've made yet another meta call: Pulled Surgical completely for 2 Bolts as the meta has fallen in love with critters with soft rear ends and Bolt-Snap-Bolt has not been this good in a looong time!
Another meta call caused by the resurgence in tempo control had me pull all yard hate from the board, (let someone else keep those decks in check), and drop in 2 Stroke for the extreme grind fests, (I'd love to try baby Jace in here with bolts out of the SB but that is likely wrong?). Stroke also battles big mana just fine. These slots are the loosest slots in the board and could easily be something else like like 2-3 Souls and a Godless Shrine.

With the unbanning of Jace and BBE I pulled a Bolt from the SB for a YP as the increase in removal heavy midrange 'goyf decks requires more threats to break through their defense, early testing is inconclusive weather that is correct or not or if it should just be a yard hate card...?
Pulled Stroke for Delay witch has been fantastic. Delay has pretty much pushed out all other counterspell options from the SB besides Rejection. The card makes the deck feel even more like old school Delver.

2018 version: Tested Faithless Looting into Visions and Scour to fuel 4x Anglers and end flooding. Not happy with the result, way to many durdly sorceries trying to do similar things and with so many additional counters in the SB it is surprising how many Tas activations you can get in a grindy matchup.
Inserted Bauble again as a Visions replacement and tweeked the removal suite a little to handle a varied critter based meta. It definitely speeds things up and often assist in keeping up counterspell mana when I know what opponent is drawing. That said, running the full set of Opt with counters and YP SB requires testing so that is where I am at right now.
Moved most of the grindy stuff to the SB and reintroduced YP to take advantage of them after SB. Abandoned sweepers completely for a dedicated TBR approach. If spirits joins humans as the new tempo aggro shell then swapping YP for Lavaman is an easy fix.

How to Play

Play normal Grixis style without trying to conserve your life total, slam Shadow and swing for big damage.
Dig aggressively for threats, disruption and removal and remember that unlike other Grixis decks you are most often the aggressor that throws an occasional counter spell into the mix.

Dismember occupied the only real flex spot in the main and was performing above average as it is excellent in the mirror and solid against Eldrazi. Origially it could have been a multitude of cards like a 3rd Denial, Bolt or even something like Rise//Fall or Claim//Fame.
Since the meta has adjusted to the Shadow decks, and because of the Dismember in the main, I've pushed the 4th Push out, (pun?), and started running Battle Rage for pure speed against decks that play solitaire, and as a blowout against weenie blockers like Affinity and CoCo. There could easily be room for a second one in the 75.
Dumping the 19th land also made room for Denial #3 that is now occupying the flex spot.

Things worth considering is a second Dismember over a Terminate, (especially if more Gideons and Gods start showing up), and likely the inclusion of Opt, (after testing multiple combinations of Visions/Opt I'm still not sure what is optimal?). Swapping a Tasigur for a Angler is all the rage lately and though I see the point in going bigger in the mirror I'm not entirely sold on going slower against the field, (especially as this version plays one unconditional removal spell more then the latest stock lists), so exhaustive testing is required.

This version is very much like a tightrope walk on a windy day where the smallest mistake is extremely punishing, but when played well the deck feels super tight and capable of fighting pretty much anything that is thrown at it in a best of 3 format. This is especially true after the most recent changes made, it feels alot like a Modern legal Legacy Delver delver deck....
I absolutely love playing it!
