Modern Merfolk

I'd drop 2 Tricksters and 2 islands for 4 aether vial. The speed from the vial makes up for the land loss, and, even if you play in a search-heavy meta, I don't think you'd be losing much with the Tricksters.

Wow, totally forgot about aether vial, thanks for that.
I would say the Cosi's Tricksters are not needed int he main deck (maybe side deck). i run a very successful Merfolk deck that is modern as well. If you want feel free to take a look. :) hope it helps. Best of luck and good hunting :)
Pardon me if I don't take your word for it. IMO, your deck doesn't look very good- you are playing merfolk of the pearl trident main deck, and those are almost strictly worse than cosi's trickster (don't have wizard type, but that is rarely relevant). Maritime guard is also terrible, especially in comparison with lord of atlantis on the 2. Also, how often do you really get to 8 mana for lorthos, even if you sneak him out with quest, his ability is still 8 and you have no ramp and only 20 lands. I drew a few sample hands and it did not seem to play very well. I think you are right in identifying cosi's trickster as one of the worse aspects of this deck, but it's the second best 1 drop merfolk, and i wanted something to do first turn, and in modern with all the fetchlands, it can actually be a 2/2 or 3/3 for 1 a decent portion of the time.
With aether vials now- (thanks to viking for catching my oversight), i have another 1 drop, but when it is still on 1 counter, it is nice to have 5 targets so I will leave 1 trickster in for now.
And with the prevalence of fetches in Modern, a trickster can easily be a 3/3 on turn 3. And, against almost anything except jund, there will be some kind of regular library manipulation. I don't know if it is worth running 4 tricksters, but it can be a solid card.
Well the main focus is to mainly cast stormtide with quest then use Reflection to turn the lower mana drops (merfolk of the pearl trident and Maritime guard) into Stormtides, making them islandwalking 8/8. lorthos was mainly sideboard(i just threw him into main to draw some sample hands and i have not taken him out yet. Inkwell is usually main. i have since then swaped maritide with Merfolk Mesmerist and merfolk of the pearl trident with Caller of Gales i just havent updated it in a bit. i was simply pointing out the "overall strategy" not the smaller creatures. and as far as games go, it plays very well.
