EDIT: Updated for October 1st, 2010. I thought Condemn was a good sub for Path to Exile, and Mana Leak for Hindering Light. Let me know if you have a better idea.
Placed 3rd at FNM Standard Constructed "Battle for the Box". Only losses came from--you guessed it--the unimaginative Jund players and a Bant deck that must've cost over $350.
5 Rounds Swiss Pairings
Match 1: Red/Black Agrro/Discard--Opponent made the mistake of informing me his deck was creatureless after murdering me in the first round. Sideboarded Telemin Performance, drew one on the first hand, and hit him with it on Turn 7. Took him to three, I gained a huge lead by giving my creatures protection from red and black, and won in no time.
Match 2: Mono-white control--I was getting sick of attempting to mulligan every fight thus far, and I figured I should place more trust in my deck. I drew an opening hand of seven, with all four Blademasters stuck together, a Hada Freeblade, a Hindering Light, and only one plains. No mulligan. First fight came down to luck. Dropped Freeblade on my first turn, and my opponent wasted a Path to Exile because she wasn't getting any creatures. I gladly accepted the offer to search for a land, and took out another Plains. I started dropping Blademasters every turn, and drew a Cleric and an Excavator a bit later. Life gain bought me time (any damage sent my way, I'd just get back), Milling slowed my opponent down, and I got my Blademasters big enough to swing with protection, enough to break through her defenses even with THREE Honor of the Pures on the field. Just drew allies in the second round and had such a huge lead my opponent conceded.
Match 3: Grixis Control--Piece of cake. Played allies, attacked here and there, and simply waited for my opponent to try and build momentum. Permanently exiled (or just exiled) a few of his powerful creatures by using Celestial Purge and the Journey to Nowhere/Into the Roil perma-ban combo (just to re-play the returned Journey on something else). Supressed my opponent by countering two Blightnings with Hindering Light. Dropped to only one card in hand, I returned one of my Clerics to my hand with a kicked Into the Roil, and drew anther Hindering Light. My allies did their thing (again!) and I passed the turn. I countered a Cruel Ultimatum (YES!) with the Hindering Light I just drew a turn ago. Drew a Kabira Evangel from the Light, and drew a Hada Freeblade as my opponent passed the turn. Dropped the Evangel, protection from blue, dropped the Freeblade, protection from black. Swung for the fences. Good game.
Match 4: Jund--Great. I would've conceded on the first two fights if I wasn't so confident from my winning streak. Lost the first round. Sideboarded Flashfreeze and Celestial Purge. My opponent sideboarded Deathmark. Used a Hindering Light on a Blightning. Got Bloodbraid Elf and Sprouting Thrinax-ed to death. Pulsed my allies, dammit! So close!
Match 5: Fast Bant--This was stupid. Here I am with my budget aggro/control/allies deck, and here's this guy with a deck that mostly consists of rares and mythic rares. There was only 6 basic lands in the guy's deck! I would've had him if it weren't for his creatures with lifelink being beefed with Exalted and breaking even for damage taken/life gained almost every turn. He was also one of those people who inform you how great their deck is and how much they love it--AFTER he creams you. Played with a slightly mocking attitude that hinted that his victory was inevitable, and complimented my Hindering Light counters and Ally combos just to humor me. He's played "since he was 9", and got incredibly anxious/offended whenever a new player made an illegal move. He thought getting in your face and bringing his voice to the stereotypical nerdy high pitched whine was the best way to get his point across. You're playing a FNM in some mom-and-pop hobby store in the middle of nowhere--RELAX! Call me when you've won a Pro-Tour Championship.
The deck runs well, no? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
