A combination of my original deck: http://www.mtgvault.com/lithionlx/decks/dying-shades/with Duckie5000's http://www.mtgvault.com/duckie5000/decks/what-lurks-in-the-dark/And a twist of lemon with some sweet n low.
Versus weenie/agro Annihilate all early creatures, and get your own agro out in play. You want to have a guild gate or two in play. Gateway Shades become 5/5 for two gates. Gift of Orzhova a Gateway Shade and they become 2/2 pump-able, Flying with Spirit Link. Enchant Gateway Shades with Dying Wish. Essence Harvest when Shades are pumped.Killing Wave or preferably Devour Flesh a pumped shade with Dying Wish on it. Side Board Cards:Remember!!! Mutilate is until end of turn. So even when undying creatures come back with the +1/+1 they still get smacked with it. You will need to prioritize its use. I cannot recall the name of the 5/5 Beast that give +5 life and two 3/3's when it dies. Mutilate will handle that with no problems. Losing Crypt Ghast or Gateway Shade is bad for obvious reasons. Again, Mutilate is a continuous effect and checks are performed until end of turn.Contaminated Ground:This is to take away those special dual lands your opp-for has and is using to combo. Since Junk etc. isn't Black heavy, this gives you a perfect opportunity to run their mana pool for them. Underworld Connections: Use on Gates ONLY.

this deck seems very good but i dont see why you have any use for tormented soul, you should replace those with blood artist which really helps killing wave, btw the beast your thinking of is thragtusk... or maybe im just tired and thinking something else XD

If you compare version 1 with this one, Its a mana curve correction to lean harder to 1 and 2. Dropped 1 Liliana OTDR , The Manor Skeletons (1B) x4 for Tormented Soul (B) x4. Dropped 2 Devour Flesh for 2 more Dying Wishes, Dropped 4 Tribute to Hunger to add 2 Murder and 2 Gifts of Orzhova. If there is a better 1 colorless or 1 black mana creature than Tormented Souls I would love to use it instead. Even if its a 0/1. The early game should consist of creature removal and buying time to turn 4/5/6. And yes, Thragtusk. I am a returning player (left 2003) and have a lot to catch up on. This deck is comprised of cards/abilities that i am most familiar with as an old school player.
I think the Orzhov Guildgate is a mistake. It might be a good turn1 drop but afterwards, it becomes a mistake. You have no white casting costs. If you still want to run it, try converting the deck to Orzhov; there are more ways to abuse your creatures in standard in Orzhov now than mono-black because standard is Ravnica, all about them guilds right now! :)
The benefit of the gates are two fold. 1) Mana for the gifts , 2) +2/+2 to the Gateway Shades. Orzhov Guildgate and Orzhov Keyrune are the only Type II Legal Orzhov Cards. If i can find a way to make this better, I will jump at it.
Gift can be played for 1 colorless and 2 black mana at all times. Guildgates always enter tapped. Crypt Ghast makes Swamps tap for 2 black but Guildgate is not a swamp. Guildgate may tap to add +2/+2 to Gateway Shade but if Crypt Ghast is on the Field, the 2 black mana from 1 swamp can also +2/+2 a Gateway Shade. Are you telling me all the good Orzhov cards from Gatecrash don't exist? What have I been smoking? O_O
The Decks design is to hold out to ramp , enchant with Dying Wish ,Pump shades to sacrifice them. If I can get the Ramp working properly, I am going to move two Grave Betrayals to the Side Board.
With the amount of Black ramp you have, mabye conisder adding orzhov, so you can abuse Exhort. It would also give your deck more defensive creatures to survive to your ramp point.
Need card names and examples. Haven't played since 2003, haven't been back playing a month yet. Still trying to get my head wrapped around guilds. Of all the places on the net to find a Orzhov guild guide. I find one in Forbes Magazine. Version 3 soon...
Version 3 is now out. http://www.mtgvault.com/lithionlx/decks/dying-shades-v3/
