Deck Description

I really like surgical extraction. The idea for this deck is you try to get play a shadowborn and chump block, or discard to hand size, then surgical extraction it. then you are playing a mono blue devotion deck until you can thassa's oracle yourself for the win. Loses to blood moon, everytime.

I have been trying rather unsuccessfully to make days undoing work somehow in modern. The end your turn deck was cool but couldnt close things out. Some of the other narset and notion theif iterations were just extremely reactive. The issue i have run into in modern in general is just that everytime I try to play a deck that takes the initiative i get blown out of the water and don't have enough interaction, and when I try to play lots of interaction I sit back for a while countering things and then just fizzle out without drawing my engines like narset or day's undoing. My most successful deck is probably my Green white combo deck that goes off pretty fast. I hadn't really played modern all that much before this week and obviously playing on untap against randoms decks isn't necessarily the best sample to judge the decks against. I can say that the shadowborn apostle +surgical extraction deck that becomes a streamlined mono blue deck that wins with a big thassa's oracle is very vey satisfying, by far my favorite deck to win with.

How to Play

Your opponents are almost 100% of the time going to think that you want to use shadowborns ability, which you don't. When you attack they will block, and they will attack thinking you won't block. However you get your shadowborn in the graveyard is fine. Then you surgical extraction your apostle, and suddenly you are playing a 30 card mono blue devotion deck. This mini deck should be able to keep you alive long enough to get a big thassa's oracle for the win. That's the idea at least.

Deck discussion for I love Surgical Extraction.

I think you could play something like Chromatic Star / Sphere, to filter for black mana. This way you can play more basic Islands. Then perhaps a Trinket Mage to get one of those artifacts reliably.

Other options would be some discard/draw effects like Merfolk Looter or Chart a Course.

Had the same thoughts, why do you rely on an opponent blocking your Apostel and don't instead discard it, for some benefits perhaps. Some Serum Powder can also help to minify your deck in beforehand.

There is a starter shell that benefits from the 'new' London Muligan rules, consisting of 3 different cards and a playset each: Serum Powder, Pull from Eternity and Gemstone Caverns. It can not just clear your library (more or less successfull) but also plays well with some other "exile abuse" cards. For example Misthollow Griffin, which can be played from exile and also delivers 2 more devotion.

Another card that comes into m mind is Spoils of the Vault. I'm unsure if it is currently banned in Modern but can also help to dig for your needed combo pieces.

Damn, I have to toy arround with this as well :D

I took this in an entirely other direction.
How do yo abuse a bunch of aggressive disciples ?
By going rakdos of course.
I rebuilt the deck from scratch with a focus on surging flame and stomping slabs.

Read up on those two cards, then get inspired, build your own versions and after that, compare your results with mine, by searching for the decktag: stomping slabs
