A New Deck Type is Born

by KnightoftheHokeyPokey on 25 April 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sorceries (4)

Enchantments (3)

Land (53)

Sideboard (41 cards)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Credit goes to NorthernWarlord and his commentators for inspiring this deck.

! ATTENTION!
***The lands represent ANY combination of basic land types.***

! ATTENTION !
***The deck has a maximum of 2 different entries for cards, which translates to7-8 non-land cards. This maximizes both the probability of drawing the combo and the number of land cards one can expect to have either in hand or in the graveyard.

All combos must consist of only 2 cards - (1) a deck-search (usually Treasure Hunt, but sometimes Countryside Crusher) and (2) a card that takes a ridiculous advantage when a the large number of land cards in your hand, available to be discarded, or in your graveyard.

Please don't suggest removal or cards that will "protect" the combo. While the suggested cards will help the combo if it gets stuck (i.e., the deck-searcher or combo card is countered/removed), they also serve to hamper the treasure hunt (or other deck-search), which now has a lower probability of finding the other half of the combo and will probably draw less lands (there are less lands and less space between them).***

Combo Contributers:

Seismic Assault (Magic Community in General)
Zombie Infestation (NorthernWarlord)

! ATTENTION !
***In this list, single cards are assumed to pair with Treasure Hunt and replace Seismic Assault, unless otherwise noted. Two listed cards in one line denote that the cards replace both Treasure Hunt and Seismic Assault. A "*" denotes combos that do not follow this pattern. ***

Reliquary Tower (MTG Vault Community) ! Ruins some combos !
Madblind Mountain (dragon77) *use w/ red

Deck Search Contibuters:

How to Play

This particular combo/idea is pretty old. I think that this is a good time to come up with new combos in the same vein.

It will be fun. I promise. Just let me call my attorney before taking that to the bank.

Submit which card you have found to complete the combo. I will Sideboard it and add an entry into the deck description.

Oh, and if you have any lands that might work, like Reliquary Tower or Madblind Mountain, let me know.

Let the Games begin!
Honorable Mentions:

NorthernWarlord <-> gets Kudos for introducing this concept to me.
Barracuda <-> gave great comments, questions, humor, and support. Found Keranos, God of Storms, though sadly it doesn't work.
Kazzong <-> suggested Wheel of Sun and Moon, though sadly it doesn't work with Countryside Crusher. =(.
Lycandros <-> made more combos than I thought were possible.
Sutangi <-> Inspired me to look for legendary lands.
s0rinmark0v <-> convinced me to include the only 3-card combo so far.
Puschin <-> helped me to make the deck description very clear and understandable.

Nice one! I'll put it in.

I was thinking about a deck like that myself.
I'm not posting it, but it's something like this:
2x seismic assault
4x treasure hunt
27x mountain
27x island

And I was trying to find a card relying on land cards in the grave, but no search results ever came up. I guess there was an error.

Borborygmos Enraged, With his ability to discard a land and do 3 damage to target player or creature.

Too high mana cost to make it usable in this deck, though

NONSENSE! All combos are accepted here. =).

Besides, the slow speed makes the combo that much better when it's pulled off.

Use Borborygmos with Reliquary Tower.

0

But the upside to Boborygmos Enraged is that you can knock out multiple players at the same damn time, especially with Reliquary Tower

Yes, I agree with wheel, probably the nicest combo there is!

0

WAIT ... the wheel does not work with Countryside Crusher. The lands don't enter the graveyard when the Wheel is in play, and therefore they do not trigger the giant's ability. =(.

Reliquary Tower is Sideboarded, since most combos NEED discard to function.

Change "most combos" to "some combos".

Ad Nauseam, draw it all! And take, like, 7 damage to do it. Then, seismic assault their face in :)

0
Posted 26 April 2014 at 14:09

The idea is to just cast Ad Nauseam, and put cards in your hand until you can't anymore. You would take life equal to the mana costs, but because of the nature of your curve, you could draw thirty plus cards no problem. Then, drop 3-4 lotus petals, pop 'em, plays the seismic assault, and go to town with the insane damage you have in your hand, reliably.

0

Stuffy Doll + Pariah is okay. It's much easier to drop other spells. Why not make yourself hexproof, or have a creature that doesn't allow you to lose the game, or perhaps put a creature with lifelink down?

On the other hand, Stuffy-doll combos with so much else. Jade Monolith, Redirect, any blue shenanagins, any spell that deals damage to a creature you control, etc. Why not make a deck around IT, not the combo, which is hard to set up?

In sum, the combo doesn't come from cards with unseen potential. Stuffy Doll is so ridiculous, the combos with it are expected. It's like comboing with Jace, The Mind Sculptor. Why not enjoy that awesome sense of discovery when you come up with a neat new combo?

0
Posted 26 April 2014 at 16:00

Stuffy doll is okay one on one, but it loses target when that player dies , throw blue in to make copy maybe , not a bad combo , but takes six turns unless mana ramp to start

Muddle the mixture can tutor for both Zombie Infestation and Treasure Hunt :)

0
Posted 26 April 2014 at 16:29

Or treasure hunt can "tutor" for itself and Zombie Infestation. Other cards, no matter how good, will kill this combo, unless they are lands.

I know, it's a weird way of making a deck, but it actually works.

Sorry, none of these work in this deck... it has a maximum of 2 different non-land cards, to maximize both the probability of drawing the combo and the number of land cards one can expect to have, either in hand or in the graveyard. While the all are awesome, I think only timetwister can be used in a combo. It goes w/ Countryside Crusher, but it is outclassed by elixir of immortality. Oh well, I will still include it.

0
Posted 28 April 2014 at 16:46

Not so fast!
Ghost Town is a land and therefore doesn't interfere with the combo.
The Wheel, Windfall and Timetwister are draw-7-effects in case you get stuck. In which way is Elixir better? It does nothing worthwhile ... Also, I was under the impression that you are seeking for cards that combo with the combo OR Seismic Assault/Treasure Hunt individually. At least that's what you said in the description. Otherwise I fail to see why there are cards like Fastbond or Conflagrate in your list ...

1
Posted 28 April 2014 at 16:53

Elixir is good for 4 reasons:
1- it is colorless, so it does not need any lands.
2- it's cost is broken into 2 parts, which makes it easier to cast (turn 2 at the earliest).
3 - it gives you 5 life.
4 - it shuffles itself into your library, so it can be used multiple times

It has 1 disadvantage - it is vulnerable to removal, especially before turn 3.

Timetwister combos with countryside crusher only, since he has to provide the deck search.
I think I specifically said that you are seeking for cards that combo with the combo , and treasure hunt is assumed to be the card you are using to complete the combo, unless you say otherwise or include 2 cards.

This blip is courtesy of you (in a good way), so you get an honorable mention:

All combos must consist of only 2 cards - (1) a deck-search (usually Treasure Hunt, but sometimes Countryside Crusher) and (2) a card that takes a ridiculous advantage when a the large number of land cards in your hand, available to be discarded, or in your graveyard.

Please don't suggest removal or cards that will "protect" the combo. While the suggested cards will help the combo if it gets stuck (i.e., the deck-searcher or combo card is countered/removed), they also serve to hamper the treasure hunt (or other deck-search), which now has a lower probability of finding the other half of the combo and will probably draw less lands (there are less lands and less space between them).

0
Posted 28 April 2014 at 17:07

I know why Elixir is good in other decks but I fail to see why it would be of use in this deck. It breaks the combo and contributes nothing. Unless you think reshuffling your graveyard is contributing which is nonsense - you only need 10 lands to kill your opponent.
Timetwister and Wheel of Fortune on the other hand replenish your hand. I didn't suggest Timetwister for the shuffling effect, I suggested it because for just 3 mana you draw 7 new cards which are either lands or combopieces. Without such a draw-7-effect you might run into the situation where you have Seismic Assault out, used a Treasure Hunt but ran into another Assault and got not enough lands to kill. Or you don't draw a Treasure Hunt at all. Or we use it, draw into our first Seismic Assault, but don't have enough mana left to cast it the same turn and then hae to discard most of the lands. In all of these cases we get stuck and Wheel/Twister is a way to get out of it. They wouldn't be needed if we could add more than 4 Treasure Hunts, but this isn't the case.

Elixir of Immortality combos with Countryside Crusher, not Seismic Assault!

4 Countryside Crusher + 4 Elixir of Immortality + 52 Mountains.

Timetwister is strictly worse than Elixir ONLY with respect to this combo.

And this deck assumes you have a treasure hunt in your starting hand. If you don't, mulligan until you do! (There is an approximate 50% probability you wont in the starting hand)

Finally, madblind mountain is a worse search card, but it doesn't get in the way of treasure hunt.

Countryside Crusher is not in the main deck ... it is still very confusing what should combo with what :)

About the mulligan, what kind of mulligan rule do you assume is used? Usually, with each mulligan, you draw one less card, so you can't mulligan aggressively as much as you like.

0

Yes, but you have a 1 - (56/60)×(55/59)×...×(50/54) chance of getting one. That's pretty good odds (around 50%).
That translates to a virtually guaranteed chance by the 5th or 6th mulligan.

In fact, the risk of not starting with a Treasure Hunt is negligible compared to the risk of your combo being countered.

Sorry about the difficulty of seeing combos. I tried to list them in the description.

Deck idea is a well planed out idea, if you are running Laboratory Maniac best would run Cavern of Souls to stop him from being countered. Also, Snapcaster Mage would go great with being able to cast him as a creature plus recasting your Treasure Hunt for added search.

Yeah ... but what if treasure hunt picks up those spells and not the other half of the combo? If you want to add other spells, you can't use this combo as well.Heck, treasure loses it's OP nature as a deck search + draw card.

On the other hand, why not make a land discard deck? Wheel of sun and moon would be amazing. Trokair is great for a sacrifice. Basically, take all the discard cards, lose treasure hunt, and replace it with Countryside Crusher.

Crucible of Worlds + Strip Mine takes a few turns to get going, but it's absolutely brutal, especially if you've got some more cheap land destruction stuff like Akki Blizzard Herder in there. Combo deck I made that abuses the hell out of it:

And that contributes to Seismic Assault/Treasure Hunt ... how?

0
Posted 28 April 2014 at 13:21

You honestly can't see the utility of Crucible of Worlds + Seismic Assault? Discard a land, deal damage with it, then put it straight into play. Strip Mine syncs beautifully with the crucible, doesn't mess with treasure hunt, and helps keeps your opponent on the back foot.

You've gotta be doing something to keep the board clear before the combo goes off: you're not going to get it every time.

1

This combo can only use 2 nonland cards. What you are talking about is amazing, but it needs to be in a dedicated land discard deck!

0
Posted 28 April 2014 at 14:48

And it does mess with treasure hunt ... the hunt is less effective with another nonland card in the deck, lowering both the number of land cards you can expect to get and the probability of completing the combo.

0
Posted 28 April 2014 at 14:51

Exactly, you can crucible the discarded lands from the graveyard into play but you need them in your hand. By the time you have Seismic Assault out you do not need any more land in play. Trade Routes would be more suitable - you can cycle through your hand prior or after Seismic Assault hit play.
Of course, having a Strip Mine in the mix wouldn't hurt but if you try to build your deck around that (or the Crucible) you would dillute the main combo.

I will put it in a different discard deck, though. Countryside Crusher, Seismic Assault, Crucible of Worlds, etc.

Guardian of vitu-ghazi (selesnya)
Razia, boros archangel (boros)
Ulasht, the hate seed (gruul)
Teysa, orzhov scion (orzhov)
Niv-mezzet, the firemind (izzet)
Momir vig, simic visionary (simic)
Grand arbiter augustin IV (azorius)
Rakdos, Lord of riots (rakdos)
Svadek, Lord of secrets (dimir)
Savra, queen of the golgari (golgari)

I think you have it. I am pretty sure there are 2 "leaders", one from the first block, and the other from "Return to Ravinica". However, I think, Trostani is a better choice for "leader" of the selesnya.

0

What's missing is the fact that, in the main deck, there is no way to effectively play Seismic Assault, if you can either draw it or Treasure Hunt, and Treasure Hunt gets rid of the land unless you're lucky enough to get the Seismic Assault early on (but like I said earlier, you still can't play it.)

0
Posted 03 May 2014 at 19:46

That's why you add a playset of reliquary towers for this particular combo, and even then, you still have more lands to draw

Once a deck has many likes, it goes to the hot page (usually 5-6, I believe comments also help)
Also, the quickest way is to ask your friends to help by checking out your decks and liking them.
As a matter of fact, I will check them out when I can, and will probably have to do some researching first

O7 Good man Barracuda.

If you notice, most hot decks come from an inner circle (or, more appropriately, one of several groups of deck makers) on this site. Getting in touch with these guys (or gals) lets you get more likes and advice.

This is a combo already kinda done but what about maybe running a Polymorph with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and then four Khalni Garden's. It may not follow the correct guidelines to this deck but seems like it could be a good idea with the cycle effect you have.

0

That kinda sounds like it would play like an egg deck of some kind.

1
Posted 11 May 2014 at 00:18

True but, doesn't fully go into a full egg, mostly would just add as an added backup incase removal would hit the main combo. But, more or less just an added insurance idea.
