When i saw Varolz, the Scar Strapped, i was immediately inspired. I have finally found a Golgari EDH general that i have deemed worth building. I started thinking about how he might fare in legacy as well, and after a little brainstorming, i realized he just doesnt keep up with the meta. However, modern has been needing a fresh new face, so i put this together. Enjoy.
The concept is simple. Beat face with MASSIVE dudes, that just turn into counters when they die. The execution however, had some immediate flaws in it with the initial brainstorm. The deck just cant keep up with most of modern. So, i decided to go with a more aggressive control map. Use early game disruption through wrench mind and inquisition of kozilek to keep your opponent from popping off to quickly. Once you(preferably) find yourself a nice liliana, start pitching goodies to the graveyard. Obviously, the deck falls short against graveyard hate, so i think ill drop a maelstrom pulse and both grips for natures claim, to force opponents to use those annoying crypts and relics early game. Once a solid steady control has been established, play a creature of some sort, preferably a lotleth troll. Once you have varolz on the field, you should be able to accelarate the mana to dump 15+ counters on your troll and swing in for the kill. Obviously the deck has its flaws, being a creature based deck where the creatures run unprotected, so im considering throwing in something like troll ascetic or thrun to guarentee a beater thats hard to remove. All in all, i think i've finally found something worthwhile enough to warrent me spending money on modern.Cheers.

probably the best varolz/shadow build iv seen so far!everyone seems to have the same idea, but i havent seen anything that has impressed me yet.this actually looks like it might not be too shabby though!!its a shame there are no cycle lands in modern
