My brother and I wanted to create a series of mono colored decks where each embodied the essence of their color while being very easy to understand and use. This is the white deck of that cycle.Cheap efficient creatures, "save" cards, enchantments.Originally this deck was actually too powerful because ethereal armor is stupid. So hyena umbra is here instead.first deck in the Newbie series

this one is my favorite of the three you sent me and 3.92 low dang. very cool deck!

thanks. it is designed to be very simple and easy to understand, while still providing enough power to be usable. and yeah it is definitely a budget deck. :)
This is for teaching, right? I would make a few adjustments because ... well, it looks like a beginner's deck and with that I mean as if a beginner build it. The focus on lifegain without any means to spend life, the fact that it has more cards to support creatures than creatures ... In order to teach you need simple decks, yes, and they don't need to be powerful but you shouldn't reinforce bad habits that they are prone to develop anyway :)* I would cut at least 4 enchantments, 14 is just overkill and many of them are redundant. At least the the Divine Favours.* I would also cut the Brave the Elements. Protection from is a notoriously hard to understand mechanic for beginners and even some intermediate players because it actually does three different things. Suggestions for the open slots:* The deck should have a least one exciting big creature, probably an angel, a type of "boss" he can look forward to. Maybe good old Serra Angel, can't get more iconic than that, but maybe even bigger. But I think Sunblast Angel is a good choice, it requires some thought when to play it and is a possible combo with the Trapper.* You have much lifegain but what is it good for? I would add at least one card where you can make use of extra life. Since you also lack card draw, maybe something like Book of Rass ? * Talking of card draw , with all those enchantments, maybe a single Mesa Enchantress ? It would introduce basic economics. * I would add a single Auramancer or compareable card. It gives the player a choice to make what to use so he doesn't feel like a slave to the luck of the draw. It also teaches to sometimes hold back until you get better targets.Additionally:* I would replace about 2 Plains with a non-basic lands - something simple, could be cycling lands, just so that they know there is more than just 5 different lands. Also, if that land happens to produce just generic mana, then there is an opportunity to explain the difference between a casting cost of 1W and WW.* Replace Angel's Feather with Staff of the Sun Magus . That's also a great moment to show them the possible drawbacks of the non-basic land added in the previous step.
excellent ideas. yes this deck series is intended to teach people how to play, and this deck specifically is to introduce them to the role that white generally plays in mtg. gaining life and protecting your stuff. small incremental advantage.good call on protection, although removing Brave the Elements leaves a pretty big hole in the deck. there were a few requirements I had when putting these together, including a board wipe and a finishing card that can push through damage. so if I remove Brave the Elements I need a replacement for it that can push damage. I could certainly see Auramancer as a good addition, perhaps swapping out Divine Favor for it?also good suggestion on the lands and staff for feather.
I just finished the black deck and saw that it has an equipment. So, if you want something to push through damage, what about Loxodon Warhammer ? This also teaches that artifacts are good to add something a colour typically doesn't have (in this case trample). Depending on how unstoppable you want this to be you could also use Whispersilk Cloak but I guess that's too final.
hm... warhammer might be a tad too good here actually. having played the deck, some of these creatures can get rather large. this deck is essentially mono white bogles. but an equipment giving trample is a good idea. will find a reasonable one to fit in here.
+1I was about to criticise the deck for using Knight of Meadowgrain wit a first strike ability, then I was looking at my own mono white beginner deck and saw that it used...Knight of Meadowgrain AND Danitha Capashen, Paragon AND Odric, Master Tactician. So much for that ;)Ballynock Trapper somehow generates a weird feeling in this deck for me. 4 mana for a 2/2 creature may not look and sound like an efficient white card to beginners. On the other hand all other (cheaper) creatures have a {1} or {W} mana cost (like Sigardian Priest) to pay...As for the special lands, Puschkin mentioned (for all your beginner decks), what about cycling lands? Secluded Steppe, Barren Moor, and so on?I totally agree with Puschkin on Brave the Elements and colour protection. If you want to protect your creatures you could use hexproof: Beaming Defiance. To push through damage you could take a look at Spirit Mantle. White also values companionship, so Boros Elite might be a good idea. Danitha Capashen, Paragon can reduce the costs for equipment and enchantments, and would add a legendary creature to the deck, so you could also explain this rule.
About Spirit mantle: Protection from Creatures is still the same mechanic we want to avoid :)
Head -> Table -> KLONK ... The only way you can heal a non-thinking headThank you for pointing that out :)Trusted Pegasus or Cobbled Wings could be used, white has the second most flying creatures after blue, so this would fit.
But he as already enchantments that grant flying. Since Brave the Elements was a one-time-use ... maybe Blinding Light ?This is the closest I can get. And if we do that, I really think we should include a few artifact creatures for all decks.
I like that. Removing Planar Cleansing for Blinding Light? Would be my kind of thought. Only thing is, I suggested for the other two decks, to keep them modern legal...What about using enchantments and artifacts? This way you can point out the difference between both, when a creature dies. Bladed Pinions could replace [[Asha's Favor]] (tough you would loose vigilance) or Maul of the Skyclaves could replace [[Serra's Embrace]] (+first strike - vigilance)Squeezing an artifact creature into a deck, only to get one into the deck, normally is not a real good idea, tough Porcelain Legionnaire could work here. But it's white, so you don't have the "teaching" effect when using Blinding Light.
Could use blinding light instead of brave the elements. Was also thinking about Dawnglare Invoker, but it might be too good for the purpose of this deck series. No Phyrexian mana here. Too good, and not really indicative of white. And no, I won't remove the board wipe. That was one of my rules. Each deck must have a way to push damage, and must have a way to wipe the board.
