Deck Description

I love to build strange decks. and this is most likely the strangest deck that I have ever designed.

it is based around candelabra of Tawnos and either dimir aqueduct + nephalia drownyard, or Rakdos carnarium + lavaclaw reaches. Either way works very well. :)
although I think that the drownyard is better.
Yes this deck gets completely shut down by blood moon and blood sun. :)

Hope you like this deck. :)
comments and suggestions are always welcome. :)
any advice on how I might improve this deck would be great. :)

does need a full sideboard.

How to Play

Ok, need to redo this section. :). It will get revised in the near future.

here is another (probably better) explanation of how this deck works:
so you have 2 izzet boilerwork and 2 dimir aquaducts, tap all to make 8 mana, than use 4 to untap all the lands, 3 to untap candelabra, for a net gain of 1 mana, repeat this process 21 times to make lavaclaw reaches a 20/2 creature and swing for win. or you could do it 50 times to mill your opponent 51 cards.
(thanks to Zaklax13.)

the best part of this deck is that there is really only 2 important NON land cards. :)

I don't mean to be a killjoy but you can't get infinite mana. The candelabra is a "mono" artifact which is an older term that refers to the fact that you must tap the artifact to activate its abilities in addition to paying other costs. Its errata shows the card as X tap: untap X lands.

I was wondering why the hell this deck was so cheap...they aren't adding the price of the Tawnos.

I think they are about 300 a piece.

Magic Vault has your entire deck at 160 bucks.

It should be over 1000 dollars.

This may sound super old...but has anyone noticed how old cards like Tawnos are of better value, production wise?
Bought some new cards for my wife, of newer series...and in our high humidity house they are bending/folding. However, NONE OF MY OLD CARDS do that. Damn Hasbro!

1-2 Fabricate? You have Gamble, but if you have the mana to run the combo (and you can ramp) you have the mana for Fabricate.. which will help for missing pieces without risk of discard, since each Candelabra, Map, and Filigree are equally important.

Hahaha, I love goofy combos like this. These kinds of decks always get my seal of approval. I think Spell Pierce would work better for you than Annul.

2

Spell Pierce huh? Ok. I guess that my thinking was a tad too niche. Was worried about wheel of sun and moon. Spell Pierce allows for a bit more flexibility. I was thinking perhaps swan song might fit s well. What do you think?

And can you think of a better card than filigree sages?

0
Posted 07 June 2014 at 00:55

Actually no, to my recollection there's no card other than Filigree Sages with a non-tap related activation for untaping a target artifact.

1

Dang... That kinda sucks. Oh well.
At least the sages will work. :)

Any thoughts on combo protection? Would FoW be a good fit here, or do you think that power sink is sufficient?

0

Well you really can't go wrong with FoW if you're talking about combo protection...

1
Posted 07 June 2014 at 02:46

Voltaic Construct, Clock of Omens + 2 artifact lands, Dross Scorpion, Kiora's Follower + Pemmin's or w/e..... Glen Elendra Pranksters + Pestermite... Capsize?.... Yeah, strictly speaking, there IS a better option (Voltaic Construct) but it suffers the same problems as Filigree.

1
Posted 07 June 2014 at 02:53

Well my biggest concern was that I want sure if I had enough blue cards to be able to play FoW for free on a consistent basis. Obviously after combo is in place I can hard cast it just fine, but up until then... I only have 15 blue cards as is.

0

Voltaic Construct only untaps artifact creatures. It wouldn't work on the Candelabra =/

1
Posted 07 June 2014 at 03:37

Yeah... And it is more than sages anyways.

0
Posted 07 June 2014 at 04:10

What about testing out the still standard combo of kiora's follower + illusionist bracers? Would that work?

0
Posted 07 June 2014 at 13:26

Well... It WOULD work. But it also adds another card for me to have out, which adds another turn to go off.

This deck went from a 2 card infinite combo, (because only 1 of the pages for Candelabra has the erratad rules) to a 5 card combo, which is counting the 3 (instead of 1) lands it needs because of Filigree Sages' 3 mana cost for its ability.

so while the Follower + bracers is technically cheaper manawise to actually use... it seems like it costs me an extra turn and adds an extra color. I don't have any green in here as of right now...

would the lack of needing extra land make up for needing another piece out? that is a tough call... and now that I think about it... I pretty good suggestion.

What do you guys think?

0
Posted 07 June 2014 at 16:34

In the case of utilizing Illusionist's Bracers, I think you'd be better off running a creature with "T: Mill" and focus more on creature activated abilities It would seem like you'd be shifting enablers which better enable a different type of deck (infinite mana, infinite tapdown, infinite counter, infinite damage...), but running a more-complex-than-necessary mill combo just because. That sort of stuff bothers me when I design decks, but maybe I'm just quirky ^-^ It could definitely fit, and fit well with Candelabra, I just think at that point it'd be better off as a slightly different deck.

Also, my bad on Construct. I have a really bad tendency to just miss entire words!

Beautiful deck idea! I think that this deck would really enjoy sol ring [if it's illegal status does not bother you]. You get a +1 from me!

I think that this deck would easily become ridiculous if some creatures that benefit from returning lands to your hand were added. Some hard hitting creatures would be really nice too. Maybe a hefty artifact creature or two. Obsidian Golem, Clockwork Beast, or any of the Arabian Knight Cards.

If you want a really reliable blocker, 0 mana artifact creatures like Orthinopter work well with the 0 mana deck search.

1
Posted 10 June 2014 at 04:39

Well, normally sol ring would be a welcome addition, but I don't know what I would take out.
Also, I wanted to use as few"power cards"as possible. Hence I have no tinker, sol ring, mox cards or lotus cards.
The 0 mana creatures are a fantastic idea though.
Perhaps shield sphere? What might you do to fit them in here?

0
Posted 10 June 2014 at 05:34

I would take out a handful of land cards (3 or 4).

I might trade an instant for a powerful artifact creature like Obsidian Golem or Clockwork Beast (2 or 3 copies)

0

Disregard that second part.

0

hmmm... dang. that would mean taking out one of the more important parts of this deck. I COULD go with just the dimir colors, but that might leave me severely lacking in defense. I could go Rakdos, but that would kill my combo. that is certainly a tough puzzle to figure out. :(

1
Posted 10 June 2014 at 09:43

I say Lavaclaw Reaches is suitable for cutting ... I would only add the Shield Spires or Orthinopters. Adding heavy artifact creatures would require a general overhaul of the deck. Sol ring is good, but methinks you have nothing to ramp into.

0

Have a question for you, Kazzong.

I want to make a Spreading Algae/Copy Enchantment deck.

Idea is to turn their lands into swamps, then nuke them.

Question is...do cards like magical hack, spectral shift, mind bend, sleight of mind, jinx, shimmering mirage, reef shaman work?
I mean...this is what I am concerned with:

""If the basic land type of a land is changed, the associated mana ability of that land will also change, but its name will not. For example, if you've changed “Plains” to “Island,” a card named Plains will have the basic land type Island and can be tapped for {U}, and it can no longer be tapped for {W}.""

So, here is the question. If i cast a card like Magical Hack/Mind Bend/Jinx/Shimmering Mirage on my opponent's tapped Mountain (or Forest, Island, Plains) and declare their Mountain a Swamp, can I put a Spreading Algae on it? Or is it still considered to be named "Mountain."

Help out.

Same with Mystic Compass/Dream Thrush/Reef Shaman.
Can I change their lands into Swamps then use Spreading Algae? OR do their lands keep their names and simply can only be used for a swamp?

0
Posted 11 June 2014 at 01:05

Well, I can answer that. For a land to be a valid target for spreading algae, it has to have a swamp type, but not necessarily the name swamp.

Interesting note: a creature token's name is the same as the types it came into play as unless otherwise specified.

Changing the color of mana a land produces does not change what type it is. The cards must specifically change the type (by saying something along the lines of "target land(s) is now a swamp").

Another interesting note is that all lands are colorless (unless they become a creature), so changing a land's type does not change what color it is.

Hope this helps!

1
Posted 11 June 2014 at 01:28

"Change the text of target permanent by replacing all instances of one color word with another or one basic land type with another."

So, if it says that quote up above. Like Mind Bend and Trait Doctoring. Those cards would work, right? Since they change land type.

But cards like Sleight of Mind and Glamerdye "Change the text of target spell or permanent by replacing all instances of one color word with another" do not work, right?

Another question, before I try to build the deck:

Spreading Algae reads like this:

When enchanted land becomes tapped, destroy it.
When Spreading Algae is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, return Spreading Algae to its owner's hand.

So...do I have to put Spreading Algae on a land AND THEN IT BECOMES tapped to destroy it? Or can I put a Spreading Algae on a land THAT IS ALREADY TAPPED, and instantly destroy it?

0
Posted 11 June 2014 at 01:44

You are quite right. In fact, sleight of mind can't target lands, since colorless is not a color to be changed.

Secondly, the target phrase is enchant land. Enchant is the key word here. Any land is valid. Then, the second phrase refers to the conditions for destroying the land. Since this effect occurs after the spell had resolved, it cannot affect the validity of targeting the spell.

Now you have a problem. Your opponent can choose to not tap his land. I have a solution: hidden strings. Bring along an invisible stalker and a dimir infiltrator and you are home free. In fact, you can bring other nasty cards like psychic venom and chronic flooding along.

1
Posted 11 June 2014 at 02:04

It does not destroy the land of it is already tapped. It must be tapped after enchanting it to destroy it.

0

My solutions are Twiddle and Dream's Grip...
Opposition and stuff like Memnite and Ornithopter...maybe. Or Opposition, with hex creatures like the Stalker.
Mind Games with it's buyback could be a lockdown card.

Thanks for the info on the rules. :)

May try something like Dingus Egg for the win condition. Maybe use that Invisible Stalker as an alternate win condition.

0

Mind games is pretty good. I like that. :)I know several decks that could abuse that pretty well.

0
Posted 11 June 2014 at 02:56

Capsize is also very nice, in that sort of fashion. The ability/buyback of the card can be game changing as well as a lockdown of the opponent's board.

But thanks to the above advice, I have a deck in mind now. One expensive deck using Urborg, tomb of Yawgmoth and Rishadan Port. With Spreading Algae and Copy Enchantment. And another one, semi budget taking out the Urborg and Port cards.

In all honesty I hadn't thought about noggle hedgemage. I was kind of looking for a VERY creature light deck. I really only have filigree sages here because I need a card to untap candelabra. And I am still looking for a card to do it cheaper. (but probably not going to find one.). We shall see I guess. :).
Other than that, normally I would say that Noggle Hedgemage would be an excellent suggestion. :)

Cheaper cost than Sages?

Aphetto Alchemist cost is much cheaper...but he taps. And that isn't what you need, I don't think.

I think Galvanic Key is what you are looking for. One mana cheaper to cast...but not cheaper to use it's ability. Not a creature though. And you said you wanted the deck creature light. So it is a solid suggestion.

Training Grounds is an option. I think, i suck with rules, but if Sages ability is considered an activated ability (maybe not...maybe it has to be tapped to considered activated? I honestly suck with rules)...then it will reduce the cost of Galvanic Key or Sages to 1 mana to untap artifact. That is a option.

Mind over Matter...hugh mana cost...but lots of people used it back in the day for infinite loops with Tolarian Academy. But again, discarding cards isn't what you are looking for.

Training ground would certainly be useful. That is an excellent suggestion. But how to fit it in?

And galvanic key taps as well sadly. :(

You can't get another dude that doesn't tap, but you need another card for a substitute. Synod Artificer can replace the candelabra. He can also perform royal mana screws.

Unfortunately, Filigree Sages is unique in that it doesn't need to be tapped to untap an artifact. There is no replacement for it.
Voltaic Key, Galvanic Key, Clock of Omens, and anything else that untaps artifacts either tap or have some other cost besides mana to untap Candelabra.
