Deck discussion for Modern Mono-Black

Needs more phyrexian arena. You don't need fetchlands unless you plan to splash a color like green for abrupt decay which is a ton better than hero's downfall.

This isn't my deck but I believe the fetchlands are in here for deck thinning. Removing the fetchland to search and remove another land from the deck, effectively increasing his chances of drawing something he needs.

Arena is good suggestion, and yes the fetches are for thinning. With fetches its like drawing two lands at once and increases the odds of drawing something else

And you are correct, now that I think about it, Abrupt Decay is much stronger removal than Hero's Downfall. Thanks for the suggestion

Thinning lands is a horrible reason for fetchlands. Only reason legacy run a ton of fetchlands is because they help you get the colors you need, work well with deathrite shaman who got banned in modern, work well with other graveyard strategies like goyf, mongoose, etc, work extremely well with brainstorm which we have nothing like in this format. As of now the only reason to run fetchland would be to get duals or to combine them with something like grim lavamancer or stepped lynx. If you splash green keep the fetchlands but running them to thin your deck is a bad idea. There's already hate bears in the format and you don't need to be weak against them as a deck. You also don't want them to be dead cards to something like blood moon. Just run swamps.

And nvm you chose to run abrupy decays so my point is moot. I don't like running oona and obliterator. I would rather drop one for something like geralf's messenger and or bloodghast. In fact ghast is amazing with your fetchlands and liliana.

I am trying to keep this a control deck, and I feel like Obliterator and Oona have much better late game potential than messenger or ghast. I might run some in the SB, but not put them main deck until I get in more testing with the deck. Thank you for the suggestion for Abrupt Decay over downfall though, it makes way more sense to play removal that can target anything than just creatures or walkers. Do you think that the new card bile blight from BNG could be good enough removal for modern?

It's good for tokens but I would rather run maelstrom pulse imo. Do not run go for the throat run dismember or the new infest that gives -2-2 scry 1.

This deck needs more money dropped into it.

It's a competitive deck, they often run on the more expensive side. The best cards aren't cheap, and I thought a deck like this could compete in a modern tournie

Sideboard Doom Blade in case you find a random artifact deck

That's a good idea, thanks

I don't think your running enough to make devotion a powerful blow to someone. I would cut down on the spells and get more perms.

here is my deck:

I am going for more of a controlling deck than aggro with lots of permanents. Removal for everything that I do not want around and hand disruption to control what the opponent is doing. I'm not looking for Gary to kill in one hit, but make either of my 5/5's lethal on their own

I was gonna say that Gary doesn't belong here. But thinking about it I realized that, assuming no removal, on average he will be draining for 10 when he enters. That's pretty good. So i guess my real question is what is Oona doing here?

Just another late game threat, a 5/5 flyer is pretty beefy and with nykthos I can activate her for a lot as an alternate win con
