Deck Description

Inspired by Zaklax13's deck:
http://www.mtgvault.com/zaklax13/decks/tribal-challenge-whats-yours/

I want everyone to post their decks that are themed/focused on Static Abilities.

What are Static Abilities, you ask?

Examples are:

1) Deathtouch*** 9) Hexproof
2) Defender*** 10) Indestructible
3) Double Strike*** 11) Intimidate
4) Enchant*** 12) Landwalk
5) First Strike*** 13) Lifelink
6) Flash*** 14) Protection
7) Flying*** 15) Shroud
8) Haste*** 16) Trample
17) Vigilance
18) Fear
19) Shadow
20) Infect
21) Affinity
22)Modular
23) Metalcraft
24) Wither
25) Changeling
26) Reach

Sound familiar, and think you may have a deck like this?

Rules:

1) The Static Ability has to be main focus/theme of the deck.
Example: You have a Double Strike deck; the main idea of the deck should be
winning by using Double Strike.
Example: You have a Flying deck, the main idea should be winning by using your
Flying Creatures.

2) Deck has to contain 12 or more Creatures/Cards that have or grant the Static
Ability.
Example: Double Strike deck. You need 12 creatures/instants/sorcery cards that
have or grant Double Strike. If the deck only has 3 creatures that contain Double
strike, and no other spells to grant Double Strike THEN that deck doesn't apply.

3) No more than 200 dollars on a deck. That is using the Mid pay scale. Idea is that,
in general, anyone can make a killer (and expensive) Flying deck using Faeries.
Setting a pay limit makes people be more creative and search out new and fun
cards!

TO give incentive to post decks/comments:

1) For every deck that qualifies and is posted to this Deck, I will personally (for
what it is worth) check out the deck and try to give solid, constructive advice.
Will like the deck if I find it especially good or fun looking!

2) I will post every deck that qualifies to the "How to Play" section. That might get
you more views/likes, if other people decide to spread around the love.

*****Main Idea is to get Decks views/likes/card suggestions*****

*****Thanks for all the people that mentioned Static Abilities that I forgot to mention/did not know about*****

How to Play

Please show some love to this deck, I am trying to get people views/advice/likes. Please support that!

Does hexproof count as an ability for this challenge?

0
Posted 01 July 2014 at 23:48

Here's a really iffy one - Levelers? It is an activated ability, but it is unique in that it adds abilities and is sorcery speed.

0

Hexproof is a static ability.

Level up is a keyword ability. So, does not count, unfortunately.

I have a list of 17 types of Static Abilities in the Deck Description.

1) Deathtouch*** 9) Hexproof
2) Defender*** 10) Indestructible
3) Double Strike*** 11) Intimidate
4) Enchant*** 12) Landwalk
5) First Strike*** 13) Lifelink
6) Flash*** 14) Protection
7) Flying*** 15) Shroud
8) Haste*** 16) Trample
17) Vigilance

There may be more.

I do think Evolve is a Static Ability, yes.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 00:23

It is a triggered ability, but I think for this challenge it fits.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 03:00

Another nice catch, I only seen one website that said it was disputed between static/triggered. It is still a nice deck, none the less.

So sorry Kazzong, Barracuda made this deck.

http://www.mtgvault.com/barracuda/decks/the-green-the-mad-hexproof/

Some of the creatures don't have "hexproof", but instead have it's text equivalent, "can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponent's control"

Maybe we should add the text equivalents for the static abilities.

1
Posted 02 July 2014 at 02:20

I am sure that would count. But we should double check with Jessie on the "official" rules. :)

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 02:51

Yes, same thing, right? Just old school. Can't be the target of spells or abilities is same thing.
Kazzong, I simply liked your Defender deck, with over 50 likes, not sure I can suggest any decent card not already thought of. :}

1
Posted 02 July 2014 at 02:55

Yeah. I figured as much. It has an almost absurd amount of views, comments, and a ton of likes already. It really doesn't need them. But like I said, perhaps it might give other people ideas on how to build a good fun deck. :)

affinity... *shudder* I played back when that was in type 2 (no modern/standard yet) I doubt a block has had so many cards banned as that one.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 03:58

Level up isn't static. It is triggered. Commented on the Indestructible deck. Liked the affinity deck. Fun stuff. Suspend is tricky...technically it is 3 abilities. Neat huh? And Heroic is also a triggered ability. Can't add it. I did add 3 of them too the list. Hopefully they will get more votes!

Good luck!

1
Posted 02 July 2014 at 05:05

Hmm .... but what about abilities like affinity and modular? They aren't truly static, but then they aren't really triggered since they resolve on the stack ...

1

Affinity does count. I think Modular is one of this tricky ones, that count, but can be both static and non static according to the card/how it is played.

So will add both.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 04:55

Another tricky one. Some metalcraft cards are static. So it counts. :)

I am, by far, not an expert on this one. They do have some nice metalcraft cards. Isn't one of them a Mox? Bet that is a pretty penny!

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 05:28

yeah, mox opal. and it is about $60 or so. not nearly as much as the other mox cards because it is a legendary artifact. so you can only have 1 of them out at a time.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 05:49

They should all be legendary. Maybe they wouldn't be over 1000$ and somewhat reasonable then.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 06:04

No, they still would be because they are basically a free extra land drop turn one making any number of stupid things possible

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 06:12

Yep, and Legendary...meaning Tap and use one Mox, bring out another Mox (the old one dies) and use it too! 2 Free mana.

Free mana makes the world go around.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 15:37

But what about Llanowar elves or birds of paradise.

Or Abundant Growth for that matter.

Other cards manage to ramp without being broken.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 17:37

there not free mana, they require mana to cast and cant be used right away so there useless for fast combos. Legacy decks pretty much have to win in a few turns or they cant compete in tournaments

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 17:47

Yeah ... good point.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 18:21

Um... Almost all of the Mox cards cost 0 mana to cast, so yeah, it is free mana.

However, mox opal needs metalcraft to work... So you need at least 2 other artifacts to use it, and since it is legendary you can't throw out three of them.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 21:22

Yes you can, 2 of them just die, but sometimes that turn 1 four mana is completely worth it.

Lmao. I am such a poser and hypocrite. Please don't tell.
I swear to God, Magic Vault got me back. IT made my Tim deck disappear from the Hot Page! Completely! Not just to Hot page 2, 3, or 4. lol It went from Hot Page, Page 1, to not being on the Hot Section at all.

Any decks I have not commented on yet, I will.
IF you fall through the cracks, though, just let me know!

Lmao.
Look at it this way, I have had to respond to a lot of decks!! Lots!

But to be fair, I will make this a proper deck. Any choice of abilities that you would want me to use?

And the payback, as said, is that my Tim deck disappeared! So, apparently Magic Vault feels the same as you, Gothy.

Hell, they will probably take my Turtle deck down too, as a threat to never post an Article deck ever again!

But will this 'static ability' make any decent decks that will change any format? This website has so much potential but a standard deck hasn't been on the hot page since my Naya deck! While as tapped out have a million and 1 powerful decks going on every single day. If every Vault member had a tournament against all the tapped out members, the likely hood is we would lose.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 08:40

Not change any format, no. And I know you believe the answer is Standard decks.
But that is partly because you are really good at Standard.

But the thing is...one year ago, when I first got on this site: 75 percent of the hot decks were Standard. I, personally, did not like it because I have not played Standard in 12 years! So I felt left out. I really couldn't recommend advice, or give out likes, or make similar decks. I would come on here, see 5 out of the 8 decks Standard, and would feel lost. Feel old. Feel useless. Feel pressured to go look at Standard cards just so I could fit in.

Flying, haste, double strike...now that stuff, I understand. And i can scratch your back if you scratch my back. I can look at flying decks and recommend cards. In return, I can hope that you like/look at my decks.
People's decks get noticed and I get noticed. Win win. I help get your lifelink deck on the Hot Page, you might remember it, look at a few of my decks, and recommend sound changes that I need to make. People helping to make my decks better, is what is is all about.

True, Article decks like this is usually just a place to get people to post their decks in hope of responses...BUT IT CAN be a place where decks are improved, moral is improved, decks get looked at/commented on/liked. It does serve it's own purpose.

I actually liked, a few months ago, when Modern decks overtook Standard decks on this site. Because I actually know a few modern cards.

But, I will try, just for you. to make a Standard deck just for you, because you make really good Standard decks.
I will call the deck:

"My First Standard Deck in 12 Years."

But...from what I remember from last year, you had 75 percent of the Hot decks being Standard...but out of those decks...they were all damn carbon copies of one another.

You would have 1 hot Standard Deck. And you would go down 3 decks to another hot Standard Deck.
And it was the same damn deck, except 3 or 4 cards were changed.
That was lame. Just like Article decks.
Same 4 or 5 decks, minus 3 or 4 cards, on the Hot Page.
Boring.

So, pure Standard is not the answer.
Nor is all Article decks.
A good mixture of Tourney, casual, standard, article, ability, modern, legacy tags is maybe the answer.
Not same 4 or 5 Clone Standard Decks over and over and over and over and over and over, minus a card or two.
Kind of aggravating when you have, "Come check out my Standard Hot Deck." You go to it and it is the same as John/Tom/Bills Standard Hot deck, with 3 cards changed out.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 15:27

And, Not sure what Tapped Out is...but My Magic Vault boys would disagree!
Let them bring their Standard copy decks. I promise you, through much complaining about it not being fair, they will cry when I bust out a few Vintage/Legacy decks!

"IT isn't fair. Legacy isn't the same as Standard!!! My mommy didn't buy me any Vintage cards!! I just have the same Standard deck as my friend Billy!"

lmao!!!

0

Although it's easily stopped, my friends don't like playing against my legacy with their modern/standard.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 17:10

I played a vintage deck with a modern deck, affinity FTW! I agree all standard is not an answer, thats why I play a lot of modern (that is where my budget decks are at!) Legacy is a bit tougher, still having just turned 16 I can't really afford all of my Death and Taxes in legacy! Sorry it makes you feel like that with standard, because I would never want to make anyone said playing something I really love. Tapped out is good fun, it has all the main formats which is nice! But I am a fan of all formats that wizards support because (going to sound like a dick here) but casual is an excuse to play a bad deck.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 17:49

True. It also allows for people who don't have the time or resources to build for other formats to still play and have fun. And technically casual had no banned or restricted cards, so they can fully abuse power 9 cards and other nonsense, making some of them WAY more powerful than a legacy or vintage deck.

The of course you have house rules, but those are usually pretty lenient. :)

However, as a tourney format, no it should not be allowed.

0
Posted 02 July 2014 at 18:18

I also agree. A good balance of standard tournaments and casual play is best. One tests playing ability more, one lets people flex their deck building muscle.

I feel that wizards doesn't try to create creative tournament environments. Seriously, what happened to cheap dual lands? I don't want to pay the dual land tax for every new tournament deck I make.

I like modern, because it gives casual players a chance to have enough cards to hold against beasts of tournament decks. Good budget standard decks are rather difficult to build (thank you Northern for your work).

1
Posted 02 July 2014 at 18:33

I mean it has no place on the vault, sure in your play group thats fine. To be honest still no one uses the power 9 cards from what I have found!

0

Oh dual lands really annoy me! Thats why I love people like Tom Ross who can take any format and make a powerful cheap(ish) deck! Thats what I would love to see from the vault.

As much as I love Northy (speak to him on skype when he is here) we don't need him to do EVERYTHING for us!! Creativity isn't gone, but Magic isn't the Wild West it used to be.

0
Posted 03 July 2014 at 08:29

Face it though, with $10,000 dollars up for grabs twice every weekend just from SCG, Wizards can't print silly sets just to prove the older generation. I mean why do you guys see the old cards as so much better? I mean Jace is only 2 years old! I love creative standard decks, especially if they are quietly good, and standard has evolved and become stronger. So I put it to you gentlemen, create a good standard deck and prove to me its good (3-1 at FNM at least) and I will allow you to bang on about the good old days until the end of time.

0

I am thinking they are saying the standard environment is boring and sterile. Standard was the strongest in the Urza block. It has the most banned cards, if i am not mistaken. That was when it was the "Wild West." When "creativity" wasn't "squashed." When "crazy blocks" were being printed. Now it is, at least from people who i hear complain about standard, boring and same old same old.

Gothy ... challenge accepted. Time to find a FNM group.

0

Standard isn't sterile ... it's just more difficult to be creative. It's perfectly possible to go outside the box, then accidentally find that you used all standard cards.

Those decks are awesome, because you have made something unique, that hasn't be hashed out to beat heck. Standard is the cutting edge, and your reward is that the deck doesn't cost a mint.

0

It's basically pay 2 life for +4+4 as infect only takes half the damage to kill as normal damage. Probe is just there so you know if you should go off turn two(i normally would save it until turn two so you see an extra card)

Yeah, yeah, yeah.
:)
Believe you me, won't be doing another one.
They are major work!
I have reviewed 50 decks in 4 days!
Lots of time spent away from the kids and wife (the wife loved that, by the way!).

I do think it was a success, Possum and HokeyPokey.
This deck is one of the top commented decks on Magic Vault. Ever.
Lots of people got noticed that usually might get skipped over.
Based on results...it shows people what Static Abilities are popular and which ones get passed over.
I believe that, for example, people that love flying, looking over other flying decks on this Deck Challenge...may of got new ideas and learned of new cards.
I personally, reviewing over 50 decks so far, found new cool cards and amazing combos, THAT I WOULD OF NEVER FOUND/DISCOVERED. I also discovered people on here that I MAY OF NOT NEVER TALKED TO/COMMENTED ON/LIKED ANY OF THEIR DECKS.

I, will admit, i did make myself out to be a huge hypocrite. I will own up to that one.

And i promise, for Gothy, Possum, HokeyPokey, and everyone else.
I will put my money where my mouth is.
Upcoming, for the first time in 12 years. No lie, 12 years, I will attempt to make a Standard deck.

And for the few people, whom decks I have not commented on yet, I will.

So, general observations...the main flaws I seen in the decks were:
1) People lack enough 1 mana drops. I seen a crap ton of decks with only 3 or 4 1cmc cards. Hell, some people did not have any 1 mana cards in their decks!!
2) People do not run Artifact/Enchantment hate in their decks. What gives? You guys never played against anyone with Propaganda or Ensnaring Bride?!
3) People, with Static Abilities, maybe focus a little too much on their Creatures, and too little on spells/enchantments/artifacts that back up their Creatures.

That is not to say everyone had those flaws. Just general observations.

I wouldn't say you were a hypocrite .... I'd say you changed your opinion of something you didn't like through firsthand experience.

nothing against any1 but this site is so broken it is rare to see a competitive deck on the hot pg now real decks don't get likes/comments. I don't mind the articles and budget decks but the fact that they get 100s of comments while so many decks go w/o just isn't right my vamp edh deck is sweet and it hit the hot pg with mostly just comments from me. sorry if im ranting but im sure im not the only 1 thinking this way. people need to make comments on the new pg and if u comment on a deck I don't think u should be downvoted for posting your own because its the only chance u have for some1 to look at it

0

Okay. Will look at a few more of your decks and give suggestions/comments/likes. Variable your brother? He has been complaining of late, about the same issues. So, I am going to look at a few of his decks too.

Same thing with Variable...he has 100 comments. You vaan, have less than 400 comments...which you yourself said some of those 400 comments are on your own decks!! Kinda hard to get noticed when you aren't exactly returning the favor. You know? Do you know the dedication, over the last year, I have taken to help other people out? You want your decks commented on/helped/liked....BUT SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE.

I have spent hours upon hours on this site...sometimes at the expense of pissing off my wife. I have almost 2000 comments! At least 1500 of those have been commenting on other people's decks. SAME THING with Northy!! Sure, he has a bunch of hot decks, BUT HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN IN LOOKING/COMMENTING/LIKING YOUR decks.

Sure, a deck should be able to get to the hot page, if it is good, even if you don't ever comment on anyone's decks...but the way i look at it...that is almost sort of greedy on this site!!! Magic Vault has, very much, a participating philosophy. The whole, "I scratch your back and you scratch my back."

Go help someone, consistently, on their decks. AND THEY JUST MIGHT FEEL IT JUSTICE IF THEY GO COMMENT/LIKE/SUGGEST CARDS to your deck!!

Very few people on here, make hot decks, that do not comment A LOT, on other people's decks. That may be a sad truth, but it is still a truth. Even Magic Vault recommends and suggests to go help other people so that your decks my get noticed.

The problem with that is there are only so many tier one decks out there. It is also difficult to come up with a viable competitive list that hasn't been played before.
Personally I like to find a mechanic of some kind, like Kiln Fiend or Tamanoa, and play off it as much as possible. Currently I'm trying to make a tamanoa land tax deck, but as I said, competitively viable? Not really.
There are only so many lists because those are the lists that will consistently top 8 at a large event. You almost never see anyone with a homebrew top 8 at a modern ptq because 30 people will run Pod, 30 people will run splintertwin, 20 people will run hivemind and 10 people will run burn and/or rdw. And those are the types of decks you'll see in the top eight.
All of this applies to Legacy as well. It is also the reason that standard is so popular where I play, sure, cards rotate out every few months, but at least the meta WILL change.

0
Posted 10 July 2014 at 04:10

Yeah ... every once in a while, a homebrew deck can pit up some serious opposition to a top 8 ... but ONE of those common deck types will win.

Fighting on a budget is also really fun.

if people here were that dense then they shouldn't have the privilege of easily viewing your great decks anyways. :)

No, i will admit, Americans are very straight forward, direct, and brash. That is how we roll! :)

Please, do not post/like/comment on this deck anymore, people...Magic Vault will just punish me by putting this deck back on the hot page and take one of my new hot decks down. I don't want that, right now. I worked hard on my new decks...and they deserve time to shine.

So...no more helping people out on this deck. Sorry.

I can't do anything about it...but for now...this deck is dead.

One of the most devastating decks I have ever seen was a cascade deck.

It only ran 5 lands. And lies of borderpost and obelisk cards for mana. It also only ran 2-3 creatures... If I remember correctly. Everything in it was 3 mana, other than 2 cards. March of the machines, and restore balance. It
was a brutal thing to watch it work.

Yeah, it was an interesting deck for sure. Pretty brutal. Might even be competitive in modern. Since it is actually a turn 4-5 deck when run properly.

0

Surewhynot, what are you looking for in terms of a tribal deck(s)?

0
Posted 21 July 2014 at 08:57

Oh hell, I don't remember all of our shop's rules at the moment. Basically though, all the "main" tribes are banned (Wizard, Elf, Goblin, Merfolk, etc.) so that only oddball tribes are played. Then there are some guidelines as to what counts towards a tribal deck, but in layman's terms it's anything with a strong focus on one specific creature type or a deck that features at least 12 of the same creature type.

Our group has all sorts of weird tribes come through. Hell, I got my ass kicked by Noggles!

Why thank you good sir for posting my comments.

I am a bit of an artifact guru, so I may be of help.

Other characters must include:

Konda's doggie (I forget his name) = Spike
Walking Atlas = Mr. Spell
Mother of Runes = Andy's Mom
Flamewright = Bucket of Monkeys or Toy Soldiers

But even casual affinity is easy to break. I've tried making casual affinity. Usually by just sticking to the Mirrodin block. Decks always end up broken anyway.

And the new Ensoul Artifact doesn't help. :)
Question guys. I am thinking once a month. I know people hate theme decks, with a passion. But they do get other decks noticed and commented on.
So, I did this Static Ability Challenge.
I am thinking of doing other theme decks. You post your deck and I post it on my deck and comment on it. It gets extra views and likes.

Was thinking: Maybe Theme Deck Challenge.
Example: My Lions, Tiger, and Bears oh my deck
Or: Mutant Ninja Turtles deck
Or Spongebob Square pants deck.

Sky is the limit. If you have them (I seen a pervy "sex" themed deck on here, the other day. Ugh, it had Little Girl in it), you could post them to my theme deck. I would comment on it, suggest cards, and like it if i thought it was good. It would help your deck get more notices.

Or I was thinking: Color Hate Deck Challenge.
Make decks and post them that are nothing but hate against one color deck.
Example: A red burn deck with spells against blue. It's entire purpose is to be blue hate. Using cards like Boiling Seas and Pyroblast. Active Volcano.

I know I have not been receiving much love lately...i think people got tired of me. Anyways, if you guys would be interested, i could do it.
