I made you Quit playing Magic!

Sideboard (15 cards)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Lockdown the opponent.
Arcane Laboratory locks the Board down on Turn 3.

Your opponent can't play anything, cries, and flips the table. Walks out to never play Magic again.

You would ask him for his cards, but he destroyed them in his rage.

How to Play

Turn 1. Play Island.
Turn 2. Play Island. Play Cloud of Faeries. Play Snap. Play Erayo. Play Gitaxian Probe OR Memnite
Turn 3. Play Island. Play Arcane Laboratory. .

--You keep the Lock in place with Counterspells and the Howling Mine/Forbid combo. Howling Mine/Forbid is a FREE counterspell every turn...and your opponent only gets to play 1 spell a turn.

--You bounce any threats back with Void Snare, and opponent can not recast it.

--You win, once the lock is firm, with a pumped up 4/5 Chronatog. You can afford to skip your turns if your opponent can't play anything during his.

*********************************************************************************

Lockdown, with the above example, is possible on Turn 3. HOWEVER, if your opponent has a Turn 3 Removal Spell, you are going to be in trouble.

So, most likely, the Erayo/Laboratory combo is a Turn 4 or Turn 5 Combo, considering you need Force of Will/a blue card in your hand to counter your opponent's removal spell.

Deck discussion for I made you Quit playing Magic!

Tell me what you guys think.
I am hoping you think this deck is pretty mean :)

Hmm .... this combo is diabolical. So diabolical in fact, it can cause your opponent to rage quit, exactly as you predicted. However, this deck can become more insidious yet.

For example, your opponent will have almost no creatures on the field. So ... fun time. Silent-Blade Oni or Daxos of Meletis will cause some tables to flip. Chronotog .... really? That's the most evil creature you want to play?

Secondly, the number of spells you cast are limited. So pop some levelers down, and watch the desperation on your opponent's face as Echo Mage slowly becomes unstoppable.

Finally, you need to consider isocron scepter. If you play white, bring silence along for more mind-bending table-flipping fun! Oh, and Judge's Familiar is awesome as well.

Okay, okay. Thanks for calling me out.
Will look at your suggestions :)

I strayed away from white...because damnit, white/blue control seems so very used!
Everyone is playing it.

I have thought about Scepter.
Scepter/Counterspell is probably more of a solid lock down then:
Howling Mine (draw 2 cards every turn) and Forbid (counterspell by discarding 2 cards every turn).

But I like Chronotog!!! He is a 4/5 for 2 mana! :)

You and my friend adore Echo Mage. Have heard you suggest it to Puschkin (which has apparently stopped looking at my decks, lol?).

Here is the Issue I have with him.
IF Arcane Laboratory is in play I only get one spell a turn.
I can't, during a single turn, play 1) Counterspell 2) Tap Echo Mage to copy it.
That is two spells.

Maybe I am missing what you are trying to say.

Echo Mage lets you cheat additional spells into play, all the while offering a sink for extra mana ... without the need for more spells to be cast.

Please explain friend.
You say he cheats spells into play.
But if Arcane Denial is in play...and I only get one spell per turn...I am confused, lol.

Copies are not cast. So echo mage gives you a massive advantage. He alone can turn fortify in a clusterf**k for a measly 5 mana ... even if Arcane Denial is in play, his copies still come in. He can also do ridiculous things with Daxos of Meletis. Let's see, ill take ... your lightning bolt. Then, I'll hit you with 2 more. Then ... I'll gain 1 life.

How would you deal with abrupt decay?

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 14:39

Of course, no deck is unbeatable. This one, for instance, is beat by Skylasher. However, you don't count on your opponent having the odd cards that beats this deck, you just play it like it is and maybe have some sideboard cards available.

Oh, and by the way, because Arcane Laboratory is so important, you might want to consider Drift of Phantasms to search is up.

1
Posted 31 August 2014 at 15:00

I would cry if they have Abrupt Decay :) Only thing I have, is Capsize. It could bounce my permanent back to my hand. Saving it. But I would have to have 3 mana. Maybe I could sub Capsize for Void Snare?
What do you think?
Would you suggest a card that brings cards back from the graveyard?

I added Drift of Phantasms, thanks for the suggestion.
It gets me 9 cards. It gets me, not only Arcane Laboratory, but it also gets me Forbid (a very important card that combos with Howling Mine, for the solid Lockdown!)

And Skylasher (did not know of it, it rocks!!!) would very much shut down this deck. Only way I could beat it...would for me to have the Arcane Laboratory/Erayo lock in place AND have TWO Chronatogs in play and you only have ONE Skylasher in play. Not likely to happen though. As you said, Vintage, every deck has a weakness.

So:
2 Questions:
1) Take out Capsize for Void Snare?
2) Bring in some graveyard return spells?

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 16:50

Actually, you could use misdirection to stop abrupt decay and if they have both abrupt decay and skylasher you can direct the decay to the skylasher! But In a mono blue deck, I think you just have to ignore skylaser, there just isn't a way to kill it ( Besides misdirection) And what about true name nemesis? And one way that isn't that good but can work is vendilion clique on there card that beats you. :)

0

You could use phyrexian mana cards. Dismember and surgical extraction.

Discard Bloodghast for great joy.

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 15:14

You mean for Forbid? Meaning: discard my Bloodghasts as part of Forbids buyback cost: If so, that is very nice. Would have to add more black cards, in my mind, to justify running another color. What would you suggest?

Or do you mean, as my opponent? You would not be able to play much of anything...so after you started having more than 7 cards, you could discard your Bloodghasts and bring them back into play, against me.

You make very solid decks, so, questions:
1) You think that I am running too many counters?
2) Relying too much on Cloud of Faeries/Snap to get Erayo flipped?

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 17:10

I think you are are not running to many counters, as you need to keep everything off the board until you get the combo, But you might want a back-door plan if erayo doesn't flip. :)

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 17:54

Reminds me of that stupid deck in dotp 13 that ran bloodghast and doj with land.

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 17:56

Actually, I would run another 3 or four counterspells, Because they can counter your counter also. :)

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 17:58

I meant as part of the buyback cost, it just seems so silly that it could fit in with the rest of the deck as a backup option.
And honestly, what I love about Bloodghast is how inherently splashable it is. Now in this it would be more difficult than Lands, but once I get over this headache I may be able to provide a few ideas if you'd still like.

As the opponent it requires a great deal of investment into making sure they remain, which at that point I don't see why one wouldn't simply aim for Abrupt Decay.

I don't think you run too many counters, but it may be worth re-evaluating which you run.
I haven't done enough test hands to really see about the second point, but I would think that at six it would be sufficient.

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 23:56

I love ideas, yes please.
Which counters would you aid for? I was sorta thinking the ones that are "free" like FoW and Daze. Do you think the Howling Mine/Forbid combo is sufficient in locking down the opponent after the soft lock (erayo and laboratory) is in place?

0
Posted 01 September 2014 at 01:44

Great Mean deck! It is kind of funny though. I might splash white for cards like meddling mage, to stop abrupt decay. Abrupt decay is just really good against this deck, and white can just say no. :)

0

what do you do when they counter your relevant spells? or when they kill Erayo when you try to flip it?

1
Posted 31 August 2014 at 15:50

I'm assuming that you counter it. :)

1
Posted 31 August 2014 at 15:54

Yep, or try to :)

Force of Will comes to mind and Daze. They are "free" spells...which trick your opponent into thinking you can't play spells because your mana is tapped out.

Example: You are tapped out of mana, by playing a spell that flipped Erayo. Your opponent sees what is about to happen and plays Terror on Erayo. In return, you pay 1 life and remove a blue card, in your hand, from the game and counter the Terror with Force of Will. If your opponent is tapped out...after Terror, it is most likely game over.

With this deck, 1 very timed counterspell will when you the game...since, if you have the lock in place, they only get to play 1 spell a turn.

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 17:02

I know how force of will works, friend. lets pretend you are trying to flip Erayo the turn you cast her, as outlined above. Turn 2. Island (card 1 of 7), Cloud of Fae (card 2 of 7), snap (card 3 of 7), Erayo (card 4 of 7) Git Probe (card 5 of 7)

Now we will assume that you are drawing the land you play on turn 3, so that leaves Arcane Lab in your hand with one unknown card. IF that unknown card is FoW, then you have to pitch your lock to it to keep your game going if they try to kill Erayo when shes flipping, and that leaves you in a pretty rough spot.

Im not saying it cant work, im saying you should have a backup plan, and Chronatog doesnt seem to be a very good one....

1
Posted 31 August 2014 at 17:18

Will make a note of that, in the Deck Description. It is a little Misleading to Say Turn 3 Lockdown. It is possible...only if your opponent has no Turn 3 Removal.

So...combo is likely to go off on Turn 4 or Turn 5.

Thank you for looking that deeply at the Deck! :)

What to replace Chronatog with? Idea is...once you have the lock in place, and counterspells to counter your opponent's 1 spell per turn, to pump up Chronatog and win with Him.

Will say this...splitting hairs, if that one "unknown" card is Daze...then I could still get the counter/win. Not likely...and relies on waayyyy too many cards. But it is possible :)

0

True Name Nemesis, or Vendilion Clique. :)

0
Posted 31 August 2014 at 18:00

Clique seems better, overall, because you try to win with this game by shutting down your opponent. Being able to remove one of their main threats (like Abrupt Decay) from their hand rocks.

Will definitely consider it :)
Will add both to the sideboard.

Why don't you play Arcane Lab 4 times!?

Black Vise as the kill card! Chroneatog can be stopped by any random regenerator, Fog Bank or something like this. But most importantly, you can play it on turn one where you don't have anything to do.

I am surprised that this doesn't run Standstill.

As much as I like Cathedral of War, it's pretty pointless in this. Should be Mishra's Factories or Wastelands (if you can afford them).

Assuming that the sidesboard is a real sideboard and not cards you consider adding: Put Reins of Power in it! That's the dick-move that will make them quit Magic if they haven't already in the first game ...

1
Posted 31 August 2014 at 21:10

Ok, so correct me if I am wrong. You have a soft lock here, with arcane laboratory, counters and bounce spells, allowing them to play a single card each turn while shutting them down before they can put out a blocker .

Then with erayo you have a hard lock, shutting them out without mercy.
Death by paper cuts. Very interesting.

7) Snapcaster Mage

Puschkin is right, this deck is more likely to Lock down the Opponent on Turn 4 or Turn 5. But it is possible on Turn 3 to have a (soft) lock in place.

KJSJS, Curse of Exhaustion. Meddling Mage. I feel a blue/white deck in the process of being made! :) I think someone could make a blue/white version of this deck. As well as a black/blue one with Bloodghast.

This is quite the impressive 'aggravation for the sake of aggravation' deck. I must admit, however, that unless you are running a ChronoStasis deck, using Chronatog makes very little sense.

I daresay in that way I have you beat for hateful, nightmarish decks that use Chronatog.

For your viewing pleasure. http://www.mtgvault.com/quasimofo/decks/doesnt-play-well-with-others/

Lastly, while I enjoy Forbid as much as the next man, make note not to be too reckless with it. It would be most embarrassing to lose as a result of overzealous 'forbidding'.

1
Posted 01 September 2014 at 06:29

The Idea of Forbid is this:
Have Howling Mine in play. Each upkeep draw two cards instead of one card. Play Forbid, and buy it back with the same two cards Howling Mine let you draw.

Each turn.

Draw two cards, discard two cards as buyback. Draw two cards, discard two cards as buyback. Over and over and over.

IF I take out Chronatog for Bloodghast, if that is what you recommend, what other black cards would I add?

I prefer slower, more dragging-disease-y kind of decks to enrage my opposing force. Poisoning their lands and raising the cost of each spell is brilliant for that, just watch them eat away their own life whilst casting spells unsuccesfully. I just thought of a card that comes to mind, when thinking of mono blue decks. And if anyone has suggested this before me, didn't see there comment, but master of waves can be very good. If you do use it, i would switch out the chronatogs with vendilion cliques for more waves, and if I were you, I would just take out the forbid combo from this deck and just focus more on the main combo, The forbid combo is just not good if they get like three creatures in play, or go like turn four tarmogoyf, you counter it, then they go nimble mongoose and even if you can force of will it, you get really far behind. I would also switch out the capsizes for cheap bounces. :)

Is this exploiting the flaws of MTG, or is it a brilliant discovery? I would argue a little of each.

I'd be much more impressed to see a Modern or Standard deck that can lock a game consistantly, but this is still pretty cool. I just hope assholes don't actually go out and buy these cards to torment their friends.

Making people mad, is not a virtue.

To be fair, Acane Lab decks aren't exactly a new invention, with or without Erayo, there have been tournament decks around this concept (albeit Legacy and Vintage ones) and I can tell you that my casual playgroup has also seen an Arcane Lab deck (with Standstill instead of Erayo, it was a multiplayer built). But there is lots of room for innovation and usually no two Lab decks look the same. It's one of those decks where seemingly small choices make a huge difference, for example, if you focus on Capsize as your main defense, the entire deck structure will look different and your support cards will be much different.

And to answer your initial question: This is not a flaw of MTG, just one of many ways how to play this game (and far from unbeatable). It is, however, highly annoying and generally doesn't generate entertaining games unless you are somewhat of sadistic/masochistic nature ;)
And there have been so many decks in the history of Magic that are as annoying as this one and yet the game thrived, so I tend to claim that this is just part of the game. However, having said that, the owner of the Arcane Lab deck of our group has been ... erm ... let's say "encouraged" ... to not play this deck again in multiplayer :P

(fun story about that deck: My buddy wanted to build a deck around Standstill and asked for help. So we co-build the deck and added Arcane Laboratory at some point. It turned out to be the key card next to Standstill. Although I technically own half the credit for that deck, I never emphasized on that fact and was glad that my buddy was the one playing this, so HE would get all the hate :P )

Would be interesting, indeed. Probably a race to see which player played their combo first :)

Yup. That is probably what would happen. much of the draw really.

BTW, no matter how many times you click "draw a sample hand", you will never get an opening hand that is able to pull this off in the second turn, even if you count in the next two draws (assuming you go second).

What this deck actually needs is library manipulation and mana acceleration. You have nothing to do on turn one, which is bad - that turn should be used to play something like Brainstorm which helps setting up. And the good thing about Brainstorms and mana accelerators is that they count towards the 4 spells for Erayo - so, if you play a Mox (Chrome or Diamond) or a Lotus Petal, you not only have one more mana to cast something like Brainstorm, the Mox/Petal itself also counts for Erayo. This way you will increase the probability to get off tremendously - or let's say, this is the only chance to see it happen at all!

EDIT:
And the next problem is:
Even if you get the perfect hand OR if you add those library manipulators and mana accelerators ... even then, every scenario that pulls off a second turn Erayo flipped will leave with an almost empty hand, defenseless. The only thing you achieved at that point is that the opponent can counter one spell per turn. If the opponent is able to cast two creatures or a random spell plus a card that kills Erayo, you are dead.

So, my verdict:
Do NOT try to pull this off turn two! And not turn 3 either ... You actually have to play this like a control deck for a few turns and then try to go off later. And I think cards like Memnite aren't the way to go in this setup. You need cards that help you to survive until that turn where you want to flip Erayo.

As stated above, friend, this is more likely to go off on Turn 4 or Turn 5.
However, it can go off (with a perfect hand and no disruption from opponent = both unlikely) on Turn 3.
Thanks for looking so deeply into it!

The cards in the sideboard, most likely, will be put into the main deck. Already thought about that. Just lots to think about...and lots of suggestions made by everyone.

You can go off turn three with disruption, but you have to be on the draw. :)

There was one occasion during my sample draws where you went off second turn. However, this required him to
a) not mulligan even though he had only one Island in hand (second one was on top of librabry
b) to Force of Will his own Memnite (lol)

After that stunt he had an active Erayo and Faeries in play but only one card in hand (Arcane Lab). He wouldn't draw a third Island soon, so that Lab was dead in his hand. He might still win if the opponent's deck was very expensive but most decks should be able to overcome him at that point.

And yes, this deck is hard to build but very potent, you'll probably tinker with it forever. Which is a very good exercise BTW. This deck is a rare combination of Combo and Control.

Indeed...it is looking that way...tinkering with it forever.
I do know, as stated several times...the Forbid/Howling Mine and Chronatog needs to, most likely, be taken out for something else.
I do know that I want to try and keep it mono blue.

There: my first real revision of this deck.

In my laziness...and being behind in college...not getting to test this deck.
If anyone would be interested (and with extra time on there hand) to run some Sample runs, that would rock.

Deck is totally illegal now...with Brainstorm. Not sure why it irks me to have an illegal deck, considering most of my decks are Casual anyways. But with that said...Brainstorm isn't broken in this deck. Lotus makes the deck illegal too. And speaking of Lotus Petal, I hate running 2 cards of a card in my decks...but anymore and i risk drawing into a wasted Lotus Petal.

Took out the Chronatog (as most people begged me too).
Took out the Howling Mine/Forbid combo.
Reduced the number of counter spells...which has me worried. But they are the 8 best counters, probably, for this deck.

Issues I am iffy with, now:
1) IS there enough Counter Cards now? 8 seems iffy.
2) Void Snare...should I put back in Capsize? Opponent may get stuff out before I get my lock in place...do I need something with Buyback, like Capsize, so I can bounce everything back? Or is Void Snare enough?

0

Void Snare = bad. Sorcery speed is just awful. Just play Boomerang. Or even Into the Roil. Just not a sorcery-speed bouncer.

So...what about going back to Capsize? For 6 mana, I am going to bounce a card and get Capsize back in my hand. Yeah...back to Capsize, I believe.

I would not run capsize, and if you want to run something like it, cyclonic rift is better. :)

gaaaadammmm, nasty deck. nasty nasty NASTEE. if I was you id make all of your combo pieces sets of four and work the rest into place. feels like you might be working the other way. 4 of all of em in the way to go in my opinion, but then again, that's all it is, an opinion. my opionion? NASTY!

And that's why I made an Anti-Blue deck, most of this stuff can't be countered, and a lot of them can't be bounced either.

I actually made a blue hate hate deck, not to kill blue though it did that to, but to get painter's servant into play, and blue just had the cards that hated it the most. :)

I have a Color Hate Challenge deck. Where I post Decks that hate on specific colors. They are fun! For the guy who really, really hates to lose at Magic, comes the 5 decks. One against each color. So, if he asks his opponent, "What color are you playing? Oh...a green deck, you say?" he can bring out his Anti-Green deck. lol.

We kind of went over this, and I thought misdirection but we had a long conversation over it and some people decided that skylasher was worst for this deck so the hate was directed at it. :)

Abrupt Decay and Skylasher would do great damage to this deck. That is agreed. May work on it some more, and try to make it stronger against anti-blue decks.

Nice idea for a deck, allthough probably not very competitive in its format.

Biggest threat for this deck is probably hand disruption from Thoughtseize/Hymn/Inquisition/FoW. These cads will force you to play defensively and counterspell, which again depletes the resource you need to cast and flip Erayo. Being heavily relient on playing multiple spells in succession the deck doesn't mulligan very well.

Instead of Playing drift for its transmutation effect, I would rather focus on a soft lock, and use a combination of Sensei Divining Top, and Fetch Lands to find Arcane Lab. That would also open for the deck to utilize an SDT - Balance soft lock.

A comment to some of the comments: No Legacy decks play Skylasher, while there are plenty of Legacy decks with Abrupt Decay.

Thanks for looking over the deck! Yeah, this deck can't win them all. Black discard decks would brutalize this deck. That is just the way of Magic. Thank you for the suggestions!!!

And this deck would be played in Casual, no Tourneys.
All I play is Casual.

Yes that is why misdirection would be better than some other card that can kill skylasher! :)

What to take out for it? Or more of a Sideboard card? I could take out Chronatog out of Sideboard and add it.

Turn 1 play Lotus Petal, Lotus Petal, Erayo, Gitaxian Probe, Island(not Needed). Run some Ponders and Preordains and it's even better...But Abrupt Decay still works.

It is very difficult!!!
There were dinosaurs, at the beginning of MTG.
But then they changed them over to Lizards.
So...no Coat of Arms, or any such pump.
No search engines..."search your library for a dinosaur creature, reveal it, etc etc"

I can honestly see why there is less than 20 Dinosaur decks that have ever been built on MTGVault.

0

good lord, I hope not....it doesnt really fit the flavor of the game. they would have to bring in so much to make a full set about dinos, theres no magic involved in them, so it would have to be a top-down design, which typically (especially recently) have not been very good from a design standpoint......I could see them being included as a tribe on a world, but not as the basis for a set.
