Deck Description

1st of 3 decks on the study of Flicker/Blinking.

The description of the deck: Land Destruction using Flicker/Blinking cards.

Use Goblin Settler and Avalanche Riders to nuke your opponent's lands. THEN keep "flickering" and "blinking" the Settlers and Riders, every turn, to reactivate their "when enters battlefield destroy target land" triggered abilities.

*********************************************************************************

Useful to know: Flickering/Blinking cards bypasses stuff like Fade Counters, Morph Cost, and Cumulative Upkeep Cost:

Example 1) You can cast Akroma face down for 3 mana and then pay 1 mana for Cloudshift to turn Akroma face up and she is now a 6/6 flying trample creature!!! You NEVER pay the full price to play Akroma!

Example 2) You can Flicker your Parallax Wave to reset your Fade Counters (back to Fading 5) and also reset whom is being exiled. So, use your Parallax Wave to target your own creatures, then Flicker/Blink them back into play to activate their "when enters battlefield" abilities and nuke your opponent lands. And/or use Parallax Wave to keep exiling your opponent's best creatures.

Example 3) You can use Flicker on O-ring too. If you used O-ring on an opponent's 2/2 creature...and he cast a 6/6 creature with trample, simply Flicker your O-ring and re-target the 6/6. Now, the 2/2 is back in play and the 6/6 is exiled.

*********************************************************************************

Sideboard: This deck is not budget. However, if you remove the Goblin Settler and the non-basic lands, it will reduce the price by 750 dollars. Replace the lands with basic lands, and replace the Goblin Settler with something like Orcish Settler or Phyrexian Metamorph.

How to Play

Use Flicker/Into the Mist/Cloudshift/Flickerwisp effectively.
1) By Flickering/Blinking out attacking creatures preventing damage.
2) By Flickering/Blinking out your blocking creatures, preventing damage.
3) By Flickering/Blinking in and out your Parallax Wave/O-ring/Flickerwisp to keep your opponent's best stuff exiled.
4) By Flickering/Blinking out Goblin Settler and Avalanche Riders and constantly reactivating their triggered abilities to nuke your opponent's lands.
5) By Flickering/Blinking your Akroma. Cast Akroma face down for 3 mana then "blink" her for 1 mana using Cloudshift. Now you have a her at full power!! NEVER PAY 8 MANA for her. Pay 4 for her, a 6/6 creature that can't be countered and has flying/trample.

Your Gold Myr is going to, if cast on the 2nd turn, allow for a 3rd turn land destroyed of your opponent's. Plus Gold Myr is going to keep helping you pay your white mana for your Flicker/Blink cards.

Deck discussion for Flick my Bic

Question 1:
What is the right mixture of cards like Momentary Blink (which exiles and brings right back) vs. cards like Turn to Mist (which exiles and brings back at the end of turn). Turn to Mist is much more versatile and can allow for a lot more stuff.

Question 2:

If I play Turn to Mist on my Riders, and they come back at the "end of turn." Does that mean I can or cannot play Cloudshift on the Rider again, and the Rider (IF i can play the Cloudshift in question) will just come back at the beginning of my upkeep next turn?

Question 3:

Very interested in this card and in this ruling:

Phyrexian Metamorph. "Any enters-the-battlefield abilities of the copied permanent will trigger when Phyrexian Metamorph enters the battlefield. Any "as [this] enters the battlefield" or "[this] enters the battlefield with" abilities of the chosen permanent will also work."

Does that mean If i have a Avalanche Rider in play, and I play Metamorph...I will destroy 1 or 2 lands of my opponents? The part about "...abilties of the chosen permanent will also work." Work doesn't mean trigger, right? So, it will only be 1 land?

I am leaning toward:
4 Cloudshift
3 Turn to Mist
3 Ghostway

Flicker is very any permanent, and that is nice...but I do not have anything to benefit with that besides creatures. Ghostway will do two of my Avalanche/Metamorph/Settlers at the same time. Cloudshift is one mana, and the fastest. Finally, Turn to Mist can target opponent's creatures and also last until end of turn...so it gets your creatures through stuff like Doom Blade or Wrath of God...where Cloudshift will not.

But that leaves out Liberate, Otherworldly Journey, Flicker, and Momentary Blink.

Is that the right call?

1)
Can't really answer this without knowing the exact card choices and other parameters. But I think you should something that flickers but isn't one-shot.

2) Everything that does something "at end of turn" will be put on the stack at the beginning of the end step. It it's more than one effect, you chose the order. Then, you can react to it with spells and the abilities (your opponent, too, but you have priority). Then resolve as usual. So, Avalanche Riders would come back right there in the end step. Note that, if that permanent has a "at end of turn" effect, it won't trigger again because it's not the beginning of end step anymore. For your Rider, all of this doesn't change anything. He'll destroy a land again but you can do that any time. And you still have to pay echo during next upkeep. In fact, if you have already payed echo before, you have to do it again. Blistering Firecat, however, could be save from sacrificing this way.

3) Don't get confused. The last sentence just means that if you copy a Triskelion, the Metamorph will come into play with those +1/+1 counters. You won't destroy 2 lands when flickering Avalanche Riders.
BTW, as you can see, flickering permanents has more to it than just abusing CIP effects, for example it can also replenish (or remove) counter, reset the "memory" of cards (for example the colour you chose for a Stroy Circle) and to get a permanent back under your control (because you are the OWNER).

You can bypass echo cost if you play cloudshift or momentary blink on Avalanche Riders at the right time. You blink him out when Echo is required to be paid..and then blink him back in, and the game assumes you paid the echo.

Same as morph.

With resetting your stuff...yep, can wreck havoc on Planeswalkers.
Reset imprint artifact: new target for Ischron Scepter
Reset your enchantments: different choices for your O-ring
Reset cumulative upkeeps (RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY!) or blow stuff up with something like Reality Acid.

But I am more focused on the "when enters' battlefield part.

no that shouldn't work, Echo says: "pay the echo cost the turn after riders comes into play" not "cast"
That means it enters again so you would have to pay it or sac it next turn.

So yes and no, good sir. Yes, you will eventually have to pay the echo cost HOWEVER, it can be flicked out and back in, skipping echo. In theory, you may not have to pay the Echo cost for 2 or 3 turns. Or NEVER pay the casting cost if you come upon another Settler/Riders. Just let him be sacked and play another copy of him.

But yes, I absolutely should of not said "game assumes you paid echo cost."
Thank you Viagrasaurusex.

0

Yeah it survives the echo cost the 2nd turn it is out as it counts as a new copy of the card, the old trigger resolves and does nothing.
You still have to pay the echo cost the following turn:P(baring another blink or if you just sac it:P

I know blink re-triggers ETB effects.
Was just making sure, because yeah like you just said your wording made it sound like you meant something else.
All is well good sir.

Morph creatures...i can get any of them with 3 colorless plus one Cloudshift or Momentary Blink. So that opens doors for monsters like:
Krosan Colossus
Titanic Bulvox
Maelstrom Djinn

But i already have awesome red creature options available. Something like Avalanche Rider in play and Akroma (morphed for 3 mana in play) and Imperial Hellkite (also morphed). Then play Ghostway. Now I get to nuke my opponent's land. I get a 6/6 flyer/trample. And i get a 6/6 flyer.

Iffy about Blistering Firecat. He trample/haste 7/1. My hesitance is that he is already only 4 mana to cast, as is. If I morph him I am paying 3 colorless mana. Then to use Cloudshift...that is another mana, for the same price I could just pay the original 4 mana. HOWEVER, the original casting cost includes 3 red mana, which sucks!!! PLUS, I can keep him morphed and use CLoudshift/Momentary Blink at the perfect time (when my opponent is tapped out with creatures and/or lands) for a very quick 7/1 haste/trample creature.

One more question.

Something like Fortune Thief.
IF i have him morphed.
My opponent decides to hit me for 20 damage. I have 5 life. Can I play Cloudshift on a face down Fortune Thief, exiling him and bringing him back into play, face up...and will I die or will Fortune Thief trigger and reduce my life to 1 instead?

Sorry i am so dumb with the rules.

That question isn't dumb because I don't know if morphed creatures unmorph if you blink them. I just don't have the time to look it up right now.

And new expansion is coming up with new Morph creatures!!!
I am building a deck now! :)

0

First off, as I said above:
Flickering permanents has more to it than just abusing CIP effects, for example it can also replenish (or remove) counter, reset the "memory" of cards (for example the colour you chose for a Stroy Circle) and to get a permanent back under your control (because you are the OWNER). So, you could use some of the chaotic red spells that exhange ownership of cards and then get your stuff back.

Flicker/blink effects can be found on permanents, too. Usually these decks run at least Flickerwisp and versions with blue run Venser the Sojourner. <= That guy is a flickerplayer's wet dream - he can blink every turn for free and even GETS counters for doing so.
There are also cards like Erratic Portal (or Crystal Shard if you run blue) that could complement a Flicker deck nicely. You can use it on creatures directly (but if it was yours you have to replay it) or you bounce FLickerwisp, play that again and then blink something else. That's 4 mana but you can do that every turn.

While Radiant's Dragoons are solid lifegain in Flicker decks, players usually prefer Aven Riftwatcher: One less life gained and less toughness but one mana cheaper, banishing instead of echo (which is a huge difference if you flicker!) and has flying, which turns him into a good blocker ("block'n'blink").

Running out of time now, going to the beach :)

0
Posted 10 August 2014 at 08:58

And I seen Venser and Mistmeadow Witch. Very are viable...not sure I want to go that way.
As said, it would be those guys...followed up with a Snapcaster.
I am sure it would be brutal...however, blue/white control seems to be done to death.

But I do get what you are saying...I could use more stuff then just "when enters the battlefield" cards.

0
Posted 10 August 2014 at 15:22

Yes but on the other hand, as you said, there are enough of those decks. Let's keep it white/red and focussing on LD. Still, we might be able to find something fitting that theme without being a CIP effect. Also, the problem stands that all your flicker cards are one-shot as of yet. Which means you suffer from the same old problem that most LD decks do: You always trade one for one. You need at least one kind of engine in this. Erratic Portal might fit the bill as long as most of your tricks involve creatures, however, that requires more mana to replay the critters you bounce, so there might be something better.

0

I know Flicker can abuse stuff like cumulative upkeep...but what about fading?
How would something like parallax tide work with Flicker? Would the card keep resetting to 5 fade counters if you flick it? If so...what happens to the lands that you faded away? Do they keep coming back?

And with cumulative upkeep...about the only good one i see, I may be missing some red/white cards, is something like Varchild's war-riders...is that a viable card for what I want to try and do?

0
Posted 11 August 2014 at 09:07

Parallax Wave: When you flicker it, fading counters are reset but the permanents it exiled also come back.

Varchild's Warriders: No, not worth the trouble. Warriders main trick is to give the opponent creatures that he doesn't want to have for purposes like Dingus Staff.

Thanks, as always.

0

With the cumulative upkeep and flicker...you have White cards as options...along with your red land destruction:
Energy Storm. It prevents instant/sorcery damage and hates against flying creatures. So...it would do with blue fly decks and red burn decks.
It would be an awesome mid game drop...and hold on to flicker as long as i can, then use it to reset the upkeep counters on Energy Storm.

Revered Unicorn...maybe...
Prismatic Circle...maybe...but story circle seems better.
Braid of Fire...that card confuses me, it is red, and don't know if flicker would be good with it.
Brand of Ill Omen is okay. Creature hate to the max.

Done with the initial deck. Please, anyone have any advice?

0

If you have them, you could add Isochron Scepter and put that Flicker on a stick.
I am not convinced of Raze. As the deck is you don't have anything that generates card advantage and Raze is card disadvantage. Also, you delay your own gameplan with that one. Maybe something like Orcish Settlers instead? You could also run some mana acceleration instead. A mana artifact on turn 2 means you can destroy lands with Settler or Riders on turn 3. Which is crucial, otherwise your opponent will get rolling.

Brand of Ill-Omen would be nice if it wasn't an aura ... you actually have to cast it on a creature. Which means you have to allow one of opponent's creatures to live. This might prove difficult for you since you don't have walls or something like this.

yes, it's the expansion. A set that wasn't planned to be legal in normal play and a card that never got reprinted.

0

I have some old Portal cards like that (i think the Settler is from the second portal)...
I have one copy of Sylvan Tutor from Portal. It is going for over 20 dollars a piece.

What is ridiculous is some of the Third Portal expansion...the one with horsemanship...some of those cards are over 100 dollar a piece.

Mainly as Puschkin said...there weren't meant to be legal/to be reprinted.
I remember back in 2000, Portal didn't even have a price guide.
So if you had a Portal Wrath of God...you couldn't even find a price to put value on it.
Back in 2005 they finally allowed Portal cards to be in tourneys.

0
Posted 12 August 2014 at 18:02

And Puschkin, I am in a rush, but agree about the Raze and mana ramp.

Why I included Raze though, was the Flagstones of Trokair. I could nuke my Flagstones with Raze. Opponent would lose land, and I would get a Plains for my troubles.

But will probably take Raze out and go with a color producing Myr.

You WILL LOVE it Puschkin, look at the upkeep cost of Parallax Wave. So...use it to exile my creatures and my opponent creatures. Then use Flicker. My pirates flicker back in requiring my opponent to sack stuff.

Hell, speaking of upkeep...how did you like me adding in Ill Omen and the Energy Storm? Again, those cards look like stuff you would love!

0

I commented on the Ill-Omen. Energy Storm is nice, yes, but more of a sideboard option. After all, you are destroying opponent's lands so that he won't be able to cast much.

0
Posted 12 August 2014 at 18:21

There. The deck is done...as far as starting to test it.
Took out the upkeep cards....all but 1.

Did add Parallax Wave.
I think it has huge potential as both flicking/blinks for your Settler/Riders.
It serves several purposes, and I love cards, in my decks, that serve more than one purpose.

1) It protects your creatures
2) It flickers/blinks back in your land destroyers, activating their "when enter battlefield" abilities.
3) It keeps removing opponent's best creatures.
4) Flicker it to keep redoing the Fade Counters.
5) It gets me an Akroma for 2 mana!

0
Posted 12 August 2014 at 19:48

Also, awesome catch on the morph/cloudshift ruling. When objects change zones they do not remember their previous existence, so you get the card face up as though you cast it from your hand. Not too shabby.

I would also recommend Karmic Guide. A nice way to get one of your creatures back if it was killed earlier.

0
Posted 12 August 2014 at 20:57

Yep, and Akroma looked to be the best morph creature. The sideboard has a few more morph creatures as options...but they don't seem as good.

So yeah, play Akroma for 3 mana, face down, then Cloudshift her for 1 white mana...and now you have a 8 mana creature on the 4th turn.

But mainly...she is the late game drop after I have nuked most of my opponent's lands.
I wish the damn Goblin Settlers weren't so expensive!!!!
I mean, they suck compared to Avalanche Riders, but they are from a rare expansion.

Other good options:
Seht's Tiger
Wall of Omens

Otherworldy Journey
Isochron Scepter

Seht's Tiger will be in my Third deck involving Flicker/Blink.

It will be pure damned Mono White Exile.
Focus on Flickering/Blinking creatures that focus on control:

Fiend Hunter, Mangara of Corondor, Leonin Relic-Warder, Seht's Tiger. Stonehorn Dignitary

Stuff like Cloudshift + Fiend Hunter:

Cast Fiend Hunter, as it comes into play, its first ability goes onto the stack. In response, cast Cloudshift on your Fiend Hunter. Fiend Hunter's second ability will be put onto the stack (doing nothing). A "New" Fiend Hunter will be put into play from Cloudshift resolving, choose a new enemy creature if you want. The old "Fiend Hunter"'s first ability will resolve, exiling a creature forever.

Yes, Scepter is a very good card in a deck like this. Might include it in the White version as it is more control then this current land destruction deal.

http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/flick-my-bic-2-pirate-budget/
That is the link to the 2nd deck of study on Flicker/Blink.
It is budget too!!!
20 bucks.
It focuses on making opponent sack their stuff, using the Rishadan Pirates (whom I love) and stuff like Cloudshift.

Play a Pirate, forcing opponent to sack a permanent. THEN cloudshift the Pirate, forcing your opponent to sack ANOTHER permanent.

Again, 1st version was this Red/White land destruction deck.
2nd deck is the Budget/Pirate version: http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/flick-my-bic-2-pirate-budget/
And the 3rd deck will be the Mono White exile deck with Fiend Hunter/Mangara/Seht's Tiger.

Jessie, if you don't slow down making decks, you might explode!

Secondly, I just have to say it ... mana curve is quite high. Bring a 1 drop that gives you one life for each creature entering play. And for goodness sake bring more morph creatures! Avalanche rider is okay, but you certainly don't need Goblin Settler as well.

In closing ... parallax wave probably isn't as useful as day of judgement ... plus the latter will undoubtedly make some people rage quit after you cast turn to mist on akroma.

Restoration Angel. That is all. It provides combat tricks, air superiority, it has flash, and a strong bolt proof 3/4 body.

But she is my win card.
The land destruction just gives me a little control/time.
Morphing her into a 6/6 with protection from white and blue (which is great). Can't be countered. Built in pump. Trample. Flying. She can win me the game usually the 2nd turn she attacks.

And Phyrexian Possum suggested me to run 2 copies of O-ring. I just...i don't know, set in my ways, can't let myself run less than 3 of any card.

But thanks for the suggestions!

Not to rant...but she is a 6/6:
1) With Flying
2) With Trample
3) Protection from White
4) Protection from Blue
5) Can't be countered
6) Built in pump.

All for 4 mana...

All for 4 mana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You play Akroma face down for 3 mana.
THEN you play Cloudshift on your Akroma for 1 mana.

Now Akroma is an 8 mana creature that you PAYED 4 MANA FOR!
NOT 8 MANA!

You are a smart girl, Possum, and you know how the deck works.
IF you pay 8 mana for Akroma THEN you are playing the deck WRONG.
She will never cost 8 mana, in this deck.

Akroma + Cloudshift = 4 mana
Akroma + Turn to Mist = 5 mana
Akroma + Flicker = 5 mana

Why the hell would you pay 8 mana for Akroma?
If you aren't being your usually sarcastic self, Possum, then you have truly missed the point of this deck.
Which I truly doubt!

Fyi: They are bringing back Morph, in Khans.
So, this deck, if they make some excellent white or red Morph creatures...will be getting new creatures.

P.S. My Khans of Tarkir Spoiler deck:

http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/i-made-you-quit-playing-magic/

It has the new Thousand Winds morph card in it.
And yes, Possum, I will NOT be paying it's full mana cost.
It will be cheated in same as Akroma.

You and your fancy morph madness ... playing akroma for a mere 4 mana. If you had more morph, it would reduce the chances of me burning to death your win con. Just Sayin'

Everyone else (PhyrexianPossum and Hawkblade) are telling me to reduce the number of Morph cards in the deck. lol

I usually go around calling you a Femi-Nazi, PhyrexianPossum, but just a few minutes ago, on another deck, I was bragging about your Tourney Worthy decks.

But you still are a femi-nazi! :)

What's with all the downvotes?!

+Jessie

I understood.

+Possum

Nobody wants to be called a nazi who suffered under their facist state's brutality or is rational enough to understand the atrocities it perpatrated. Especially Jews and Germans, but also Poles, members of what was formerly Chzechslovakia, Gypsy communities, religious leaders of all denominations (most notably outspoken clergymen of the catholic church and lutheran protestants), and so many more groups and nationalities.

I am very, very sorry...Phyrexian Possum...

It was a term a few of my friends used, back in highschool...to describe a woman that was UBER feminist, a know it all woman, a girl who hated anything male invented. A man hater.

When we said Femi-Nazi...it was to say that we thought a particular girl in school was a man hater. lol
We didn't even consider brutality, deaths, Holocaust.
We were sorta of...in a very 17 year old boy fashion...calling a girl a man hating lesbian if we called her Femi-Nazi. Immature, rude, and incorrect...I know. But it was a joke between us. Nothing serious.

Anyone watch South Park? It is like the episode where the kids call other people "Fags"
It wasn't calling people gay or downing them for being gay, they weren't even talking about gay people...they just meant that any douchebag in the world...who does dumb shit that aggravates or annoys other people...is a "Fag."

Same word...but different meaning.

I am sorry. I simply did not mean the word as you took it.
I was insensitive.

Knight, you are a smart chap with your knowledge with History :)

And my comments deserved to be downvoted.
Very much deserved to be downvoted.
Nor was I the one that downvoted PhyrexianPossum.

Again, I am very sorry.

Oh great and honorable Jessie: I an priveleged to inform you that your flicker shenanigans work with two very important strategies, outside of morph.

1. Act of Treason and Company (permanent steal for low CC)
2. Creatures with unearth. The exile effect can't trigger when a card is already exiled ... so basically you can cast cards from your graveyard.

P.S. Cloudshift and Turn to Mist basically say, "counter target removal". Simply flicker the target, then the removal spell's original target is nonexistent when it resolves (the permanent that re-enters the battlefield is new), and it fizzles. Pretty cool!
