Aristocrat Format Challenge

by Jessie on 21 September 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (12 cards)

Creatures (4)

Sorceries (5)

Instants (3)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

Deck Description

Peasant, Pauper, Noble, and now Aristocrat.

Here is the Challenge:
Make an Aristocrat deck.

Rules:
1) Decks must contain 60 cards.
2) Decks can have up to 2 rares. Of the two rares, each one must be unique. In other words, a deck can't have two copies of the same rare.
3) Mythic rares are not allowed. Ever! Yes, that means no planeswalkers.
***EDIT: Has been pointed out to me, by s0rinmark0v, that there were 5 Planeswalkers that started out Rares, and were converted over to Mythical Rares:
Aristocrat Planeswalkers (Only allowed Planeswalkers in Aristocrat Format)
- Ajani Goldmane
- Jace Beleren
- Liliana Vess
- Chandra Nalaar
- Garruk Wildspeaker
4) Decks can also have up to 12 uncommons. Like the rares, the number of copies you can include of any particular uncommon is restricted. In this case, no more than three copies of any one uncommon are allowed.
5) The rest of your deck is composed of commons, with the restriction that only 4 copies of up to three particular commons are allowed, with the rest of the deck's commons being limited to no more than 3 per unique common.
6) Basic lands are used as normal, with no particular limit on copies.
7) Sideboards are allowed and encouraged, and may include up to 1 rare and 3 uncommons, duplicating perfectly the rarity distribution of a typical booster pack. Additionally, none of the cards in the sideboard can be copies of the cards in the main deck.
8) Sideboards are allowed to have 4 copies of up to two particular commons in the sideboard.

How to Play

Rares:
1 Deathbringer Liege
1 Divinity of Pride
--------------------------(Limit of rares)

Uncommons:
3 Souls of the Faultless
3 Tainted Field
3 Voracious Hatchling
3 Night's Whisper
-----------------------(Limit of Uncommons)

Commons:
4 Edge of the Divinity
4 Unearth
4 Nightsky Mimic
----------------------(Limit of commons with 4 ofs)
3 Soul Link
3 Pacifism
3 Nip Gwyllion
3 Disenchant
3 Unmake

*********************************************************************************

Purpose of each card:

Deathbringer Liege. 1 ) Triggers Mimic. 2) He pumps up every creature in the deck +2/+2. 3) He kills a creature my opponent controls, every time I cast a creature.

Divinity of Pride. 1) Triggers Mimic. 2) He has lifelink and flying. 3) If you have over 25 life (which you usually will) he is a 8/8 with lifelink and flying!

Nightsky Mimic. 1) He becomes a 4/4 flyer every time I cast a black and white card. 2) I have 25 black/white cards in the deck. 3) Play Edge of the Divinity on Mimic to make him a 7/7 flyer.

Nip Gwyllion. 1) Triggers Mimic. 2) Early turn lifelink 3) Early turn chump blocker.

Souls of the Faultless. 1) Triggers Mimic. 2) Blocking champion. 3) Gains life every time he blocks. 4) Can be enchanted with Edge of the Divinity or Soul Link.

Voracious Hatchling. 1) Triggers Mimic. 2) Extra attack power. 3) More lifelink. 4) Like Mimic, black/white spells pump him up. 5) Lifelink for extra life.

Edge of the Divinity. 1) Triggers Mimic. 2) Gives every creature I have +3/+3 for 1 mana.

Pacifism. 1) Stops one of opponent's bigger creatures from attacking. 2) Stops opponent from being able to block with one of his creatures. 3) Prevents damage.

Soul Link. 1) Triggers Mimic. 2) Can be used against my opponent's creature, negating the damage it does. 3) Can be used on my creatures to gain extra life.

Disenchant. 1) Kills an opponent's artifact or enchantment. 2) Combo breaker.

Murder. 1) Creature control 2) Kills a potential attacker my opponent has. 3) Kills a potential blocker my opponent has.

Night's Whisper. 1) Draws me two cards. 2) Prevents topdecking. 3) Keeps the tempo up.

Unearth. 1) Gets back my Mimic from the graveyard. 2) Also gets Souls of the Fautless and Nip Gwyllion. 3) Helps against spells that my opponent has, that kills my creatures.

*********************************************************************************

Example of what I am aiming for:

Turn 1. Plain. Nip Gwyllion

Turn 2. Swamp. Nightsky Mimic.

Turn 3. Plain. Edge of the Divinity on Nip Gwyllion and Pacifism/Disenchant on opponent.
Attack with Nip Gwyllion (3/3) and Nightsky Mimic (4/4).
Opponent loses 7 life.
You gain 3 life.

Turn 4. Swamp. Voracious Hatchling.
Attack with Nip Gwyllion (3/3) and Nightsky Mimic (4/4).
Opponent loses 7 life.
You gain 3 life.

Turn 5. Plain. Deathbringer Liege.
Attack with Nip Gwyillion (5/5) and Nightsky Mimic (6/6) and Voracious Hatchling (5/5).
Opponent loses 16 life.
You gain 10 life.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Possible life total for you: 36
Possible life total for opponent: -30

Crap...is he?
Okay, okay.
Revamp. Thanks!

I need to follow my own rules, huh?
Okay. Obzedat is out, and Divinity of Pride is in.
Honestly, he is probably a better card anyways!
He will most likely be a 8/8 flying creature with lifelink.
Plus he triggers Nightsky Mimic.

Very well you cunning rogue, I shall play your game... WITH ELVES. Because I'm lazy like that.
http://www.mtgvault.com/jensdagon/decks/aristocracy-in-elvish/

In all seriousness this format looks like a ton of fun, and I really like the design you've made here. It looks like it'd be super fun to play against with this formats rules, and kind of an uphill battle. I can't wait to see the other ones!

My favorite Pre-Constructed deck was:
Exodus "Dominator"
It had both a Propaganda and Equilibrium. 4 Counterspells. 2 Forbid. 2 Capsize, and a lot of other good cards.
Fun times!

*********************************************************************************************************************************

For everybody that has payed attention to this Challenge:

Have you noticed how it copies Pre-Construction decks?

Right?

--2 rares, 12 uncommons, 46 commons.
--Basic lands.
--Very few cards that are full playsets (4 copies of a card).

So, in theory, everyone is taking their turns making their own Pre-Construction decks for potential Mtg players to buy.
I think it is a neat idea.

nice deck, too bad cant have mythics but these are "THE RULES" anyway, there are some good cards you could use here like:

Unmake
Batwing Brume
Vampire Nighthawk
Suture Priest
Sign in Blood

or even make something like soul sisters base (Soul Warden + Soul's Attendant)

1
Posted 23 September 2014 at 01:37

I considered Batwing Brume, for sure!
And also considered Nighthawk. He has so many abilities, Mtg makers almost ran out of space on the card!
Him not being black AND white made me not choose him.
Sign in Blood is double black. Check out Night's Whisper. It does the same thing, but it is 1 black and 1 colorless. The one colorless is easier to cast.

Thanks for the suggestions!!!
If you take up the challenge, please be sure to post it here.

1
Posted 23 September 2014 at 01:44

but sign in blood is common, you could use something better on the "uncommon slot" , also unmake is much better than murder since you exile and is 3x white OR black , very useful

1
Posted 23 September 2014 at 01:49

Will consider Sign in Blood for now.
The double black mana, shouldn't be a problem, huh...since I won't be playing it until the 4th or 5th turn anyways.

Unmake is DEFINITELY in! It triggers Mimic!
Good call!

I think that just shows that Aristocrat brings down the power of decks...which isn't necessarily a bad thing! Even more so, I would say, every deck that has been posted has been pretty balanced compared to each other.
I am really liking the results, so far!

Joking aside, yes!
Like Pauper and the other Formats, if a card was originally printed as an uncommon, and went to a rare...you can use it as an uncommon in the Format

Challenge. Likewise, if there was a Planeswalker that was originally a rare and went to mythic...he is legal to use!!!

Good job catching that!

How bout that 2$ troll deck of Northy's ... treasure hunt and zombie infestation? You won't get far, but ypu will beat some $200 dollar decks with just ... $2.

Nice tournament deck. Now add about $200 dollars worth of dual lands in, then you're set.

Lol ... I still think that boros commando is a tad awkward with all the damage dealing spells being only 1 or 2 CMC. Any suggestions?

I didn't say weak ... I said awkward. Keeping a lightning bolt or Boros charm in hand til turn 6 or 7 so you can trigger his ability is difficult ... but the combo with balefire liege is irresistible. Cast lightning helix, then cast another helix (thanks to Mr. Balefire), drop two 3/3 soldier tokens with haste onto the field, then make your mimic a 4/2 first strike.

Thanks for that man. I'm also working now to break your pet format!

So with your deck, I don't think it's at all bad, but I think you have cards that pull in two different directions, creating some tension. Nightsky and Edge are extremely aggressive cards and a little weird to be combining with the likes of Souls of the Faultless and Night's Whisper/Disenchant. If I were trying to move forward with the deck, I would pick a direction first. Either more aggressive, or more control based. W/B is not actually very good at a midrangey build.

Personally, I don't like Nightsky decks any more. They're very dependent on two bomby cards... While Edge and Nightsky are good, they put you in a position to lose card advantage and then not be able to finish the game. (This is why you should include Death's Grasp to finish them in these decks. You should also have a back up flying force, like 4 Mourning Thrulls and 2 Beckon Apparition. Even Blind Hunter is playable in that deck.

If you went more in a control/attrition based direction, you should use the same rares but start with cards you know to be good in almost every situation-

attack the hand:
4 Castigate
3 Gerard's Verdict
3 Tidehollow Sculler
2 Sin Collector

and add more top notch removal:
3 Unmake
4 Pillory of the Sleepless
3 Mortify
2 Death Grasp

And then go from there.

Mtg designers said it was a mistake, and not sure how it got passed on.

Skullclamp started out costing 2 more mana, and also not having the awesome stats it has...it went through several more changes, including name, until it became "Skullclamp" that we all know and love.

Skullclamp started out as Suicide Sweater!

Yeah I mean besides Skullclamp, Sword of the Meek+Thopter Foundry and Sensei's Divining Top+Counterbalance are also broken uncommon combinations. 0
Posted 28 September 2014 at 17:10

Yes, several people have went to the Cardshark forum and complained to the Creator of the Format about it.

I think he is overwhelmed on how to fix it.
Because, him creating Aristocrat deck was out of trying to fix the rare/uncommon/common issue that Noble/Pauper had.
But...Aristocrat is ending up turning out the same way as the other formats.

It really isn't his fault, or your fault...it is MTG's vault for changing cards from rare to uncommon/vice versa.

0

I am in total agreement, and I do agree that there needs to be a ban-list for this format. Especially if DCI pickes it up. I feel that there are a lot of younger players out there who are in need of an affordable format, one that they can play. If they like playing MTG at Friday night magic, let em'. But they dont because of the expenses that it requires. Perfecting this format and advertising for it may expand the magic community, and that would be great to see.

So back to the ban list..... Lol..... I think a good place to start is with the modern ban list, and the vintage/legacy ban list. Put all of those cards on there, unless they are mythic of course. That should solve a lot of problems. Cards like ponder could probably come off the ban list, maybe, maybe preordain. With serym visions being expinsive, ponder might allow a more cost effective alternative for players to turn to. Definitly leave the artifact lands on the list. Affinity will come back again then, and probably dominate the format. Tarmogoyf might be a ban, one of, if not the best 2-drop ever, was printed in rare form, and decks, and matches could be swung because of it. Even in modern, if there is not an immediate awnser, you are prolly going to lose the game. But, since only 1 is allowed, i don't see it being too broken here, but keep it in mind, if we start seeing it all over, then you should re-consider.

Well, I'm done with my rambling, have a good day :)

You are the one of the people, vanquard, in which I was talking about.
You should definitely let the creator on cardshark know your concerns.
I think we (everybody included) got the ball started with this Format having a chance at making it big.

I do like how, with only 2 rares and 12 uncommons...young kids (and people in college/with families) can afford to be competitive ANDDDD rich little spoiled kids can still play some of their very high dollar cards/decks.

It is unfortunate that the creator of the Format ran into the same problems with his Format, (confusion with rares/uncommons/commons) that he tried to avoid concerning Pauper/Noble/Peasant.

I think, I can not speak for him, that his intentions were that if he allowed 2 rares and 12 uncommon cards...that the deck would end up looking like a Pre-Constructed deck (we all have really been making Pre-Constructed decks, if you really come to think about). Further more, if they all looked like Pre-Constructed decks, they all had a 50/50 chance at winning. That, in theory, all the decks...from 15 dollars to 1000 dollar decks, would have a chance at winning. I love the ideals of that.

But as some people have pointed out, with the Urza Lands, Sword of the Meek, Artifact lands, Sol ring, etc etc etc...I can sum up the problem up like this:

Strip Mine (4th edition) was an uncommon!!!
3 Strip Mines in a deck does not come off as a Pre-Constructed deck you buy at your local Comic/Magic Shop!

So...there needs to be a Banned list.
And a ruling on rarity.
IF a card was first produced as a Rare and ended up Mythical, which do you go by?
Can you use the Rare version for your Aristocrat deck?
Can I use my Strip Mine as 3 copies for an uncommon slot? Or is it considered a rare? And can I only use 1 copy?

Sadly, we have to debate the fact of rarity, and CLEARLY wizards don't know what they are doing. So I think because of this fact, if a card was re-printed as a mythic, then clearly wizards has seen their mistake, and re-printed it with the correct rarity. I would use skull clamp as an example, but it has not been reprinted, so let's use the ever so special Tarmogoyf as an example. It was printed in future sight as a rare. The price quickly shot up because it is probably the best 2-drop in the game. Wizards realized their mistake, and when they decided to re-print it in modern masters, they changed the rarity to the mythic rarity it should have been in the first place.
Because the latest version of the goyf was printed as a mythic, the card should be counted as a mythic because wizards has had time to re-consider.

Therefore i propose a rule:
The most recent rarity is what the card is counted as.

That should solve a lot of our problems. Hope it helps

0

If we are debating, let me go on record:

There should of NOT ever been "Mythical" rares.

Mtg is not Pokemon!

Magic was working fine with rares.

And that rule you proposed, is a nice one.
Probably need to run it by the guy that created it, and get his opinion.

0

It makes sence why they have a rarity beyond rare, but yes, they could have called it something different. It is because money. They print less mythical rares and they are supposed to be (according to wizards) the better cards in the set. Money.

I'm glad I made a positive impact here, and I bet you guys don't even realize i'm only 16 :)
I'm more then happy to help provide insight to anything you guys are working on in this format. I hope one day this format will become one of the most successful formats available. Again, I would really like to know if this is getting out to WoTC. I may email them myself and inform them if that has not been done already. The impact this has had on the vault is amazing, and I should hope that once popularized, it has the same impact on the Magic community.

Yawgmoth's Bargain
Memory Jar OR Vampiric Tutor

3 Skirge Familiar for the combo with Bargain.

And now for something completely different.

I've made a few of these Aristocrat decks. Part of the fun/frustration is the limitations.

Would there be any value to having an equivalency value?

Trade a rare for 2 uncommons. Trade 2 rares for a mythic rare?

Or to expand on that idea:

Maybe a point value or point buy system? Basic lands and commons 1 point each. Uncommons 2 points each, Rares 4 points and mythic rares 8 points?

As the rules stand the point value of an Aristocrat deck would be (2x4)+(12x2)+(46x1)=78.

The deck would have to be 78 points. Exactly. And 60 cards.

I have only made two Edh decks.
I suck at them.
I have never made a 3 color deck, ever.

I have a new idea.
A community EDH deck.
Anyone interested?

Would work something like this:
I would pick the 3 colors, and the Legend (Commander?).
And then, one person at a time, would suggest 1, 2, 3 or a few cards to add.
I add them. And another person suggests the next few cards.

I would keep adding cards until I had 99/100 cards in the deck. :)

1
Posted 06 October 2014 at 21:38

Hell, it doesn't even need to be 3 colors or EDH.

I do think, say 10 people, making a deck together, could be interesting.
The debates.
Card choices.
Combos.
Etc.

0

Or both?....
My current Rakdos, Lord of Riots commander has only lost twice in the 20something games I've used it in. True though, these were casual games and one of the losses, I wasn't using it. But still, it is one of the fastest and most lethal commanders that I have ever seen.
If it's not a fast creature, burn spell or kill spell, it ain't in there. Chandras excepted, of course

0
Posted 07 October 2014 at 00:02

Haha! No doubt!
EDH is so much fun! Singleton decks lend themselves well to interesting board conditions.
I've had fun playing a Toshiro Umezawa deck. Kamahl, Fist of Krosa or Gerrard Capashan were interesting generals too.
Mayael the Anima makes for a pretty cool general.

Rakdos, Lord of Riots. Wow, he IS a badass. The deck almost makes itself. I can imagine he brings big pain.

0
Posted 07 October 2014 at 00:20

I play casual.
Usually is cheaper.
Less pressure.
Usually broader base of cards to choose from.

To be specific, I usually play Casual Legacy/Vintage games that average 3 to 7 Turns.
And most of the decks are a few hundred dollars, not any more expensive.
And I play against the same type of decks. 200-300 dollar Legacy/Vintage decks.
Nothing over powered, or involving banned cards, or Power 9 and/or uber expensive cards.

I LOVE Bounce!!!

So, any awesome Bounce type Commanders?
Is Bounce even viable in EDH/Commander?
Like i've said, I have only built 2 EDH decks. And NEVER made a 3 color deck.
That is why I asked so many people to help :)
I know 3 color decks get expensive due to dual lands, so there is that :(

0
Posted 07 October 2014 at 00:21

There are cheaper duals out there like the Guildgates and the life gaining lands from Zendikar and now Kahns of Tarkir, so there are plenty of viable options for budget dual land

0

I am looking at Roon of the Hidden Realm as a early favorite.
Sure, he doesn't bounce.
But he flickers. And is 3 colors.

Stuff like Blade Splicer, Master Splicer, Vital Splicer, Wing Splicer comes to mind.

And Rishadan Pirates.

And Fiend Hunter, Leonin Relic-Warder, Flickerwisp, Seht's Tiger, and Mangara of Corondor.

Some new morph creatures to cheat in, maybe.

Restoration Angel.

And of course, Flicker, Turn to Mist, Cloudshift, Momentary Blink, Ghostly Flicker.

That is a rough idea.
Again, it is Flicker and not a bounce deck.

I have a question involving this format. It's one I just thought of:

If I have a common that allows me to have as many as I choose of it in my deck, is the limit of it still 4 or does the card overrule the limit? I was thinking of doing a Shadowborn Solo deck, but was curious if I even could.

I GOT ANOTHER ONE: Am I allowed to use unhinged or does that go too far? I just want Laughing Hyena in a deck, that's all.

Again, up to you.
Honestly you would have to ask the guy that created it.
You can find the link to that website/guy on this deck page.
