Llanowar Elves / Avacyn's Pilgrim can turn this into a turn 3 combo.
T1: Forest, mana dork
T2: land, Midnight Guard
T3: land, Presence of Gond

Another card that might interest you: Sigil of the Nyan Gods. Works well with the Devoted Druid plan when Ivy Lane Denizen isn't around, is a cheap cantrip (cycling), or can turn a creature into a very large attacker.

Thank you so much for your support! I was looking for a card exactly like Sigil and you helped me out so much! Thank you! Also your right it could be a Turn 3 Auto Win!

I run a pauper deck similar to this. While I have the Midnight Guard + Presence of Gond combo in the deck, my deck actually revolves around casting Sprout Swarm a lot:

https://www.mtgvault.com/dedwards/decks/token-swarm-pauper/

Where you went "all in" on the infinite combo, I decided to go for more consistency. I think I should try an "all in" version myself, maybe with a splash of red for Impact Tremors. Hmmm...

I like your deck. Sprout Swarm is like a green Lingering Souls. I wouldnt mix red for impact tremors though.

I would go all in though.

Why don't you remove Wirewood Herald so it's Modern legal?

I never understood the pauper concept. It's restriction to commons only is supposed to be a budget format for the poor (therefore "pauper", latin for "poor"), right? Yet many pauper decks cost considerably more than some regular decks. This one for example is over 40 dollars.

Anyway,
* I suggest Kithkin Spellduster if you ever consider having a sideboard (personally I'd go with about 2 main).

* I am surprised that you don't run Manamorphose, probably insted of Utopia Sprawl, since all you need is a single white mana to go off and if you have that already, Manamorphose can be "cycled" for nothing.

* Maybe Soul Warden so you also get infinite life? Probably not needed for 1-on-1 but if you ever take this to multiplayer there might be players you can't kill with 1/1s or cards that prevent you from attacking at all etc, infinite life would give you time and maybe even a win by decking.

Meta pauper decks are $120. Kithkin Spellduster is a good one of in the sideboard. Manamorphose is a Uncommon so can't run it. I thought about Soul Warden or Essence Warden, but it ruins consistency. The only time when Warden's are useful is when you make the infinite tokens and they some how kill you during the time your tokens have summoning sickness, but I could chump block all of it, and if he has flyers, I run 2 Aerie Ouphes.

I want to add Benevolent Body Guard but I dont know what to take out, and its awkward to have white mana for it.

how do burr grafter and moonlit strider help? they have soulshift, but that only brings something else smaller back to your hand. sadly, not infinite.

Except that Soulshift only returns Spirits

You also have infinite mana but it is a 4 card combo midnight guard with presence of gond for the infinite creatures and the put a sigil of the nayan gods on devoted druid and tap the druid for mana and put as many -1/-1 counters as you want because his power is equal to the number of minions you have and you have infinite. Not that this is too important since you already have other infinites.

???

Actually they do cancel each other out. From the comprehensive rules :

121.3. If a permanent has both a +1/+1 counter and a -1/-1 counter on it, N +1/+1 and N -1/-1 counters are removed from it as a state-based action, where N is the smaller of the number of +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters on it. See rule 704.

So yes, the safe hold elite will die, causing it to trigger persist, bringing it back with a - 1/-1 counter on it, which then triggers ivy lane denizen to put a +1/+1 counter on it. After which both counters are removed, allowing the process to be repeated.

Now if at some point the safehold Elite died with a - 1/-1 counter on it, having NOT had a+1/+1 counter placed on it for some reason, then yes it stays dead. But if it did get both counters they they are both removed.

Essentially what you linked says that if the creature has a - 1/-1 counter on it when it dies it won't come back, because it doesn't meet the trigger requirements. Also if somehow you put multiple - 1/-1 counters on something at a time like... Safe hold elite is a 3/3 because of a +1/+1 counter and gets 3 - 1/-1 counters, that is enough to kill it by giving it 0 toughness, even after removing one of those counters, because of the +1/+1 counter, it still dies and doesn't trigger persist because it dies with a -1/-1 on it.

Sorry and thanks. I had never seen persist before and just followed it to the wiki and misinterpreted it. Never knew that about counters, I was actually trying to find that exact part about them canceling out but didn't know how to find it.

Thanks for the education

yeah. always glad to help people understand more about the game. Interactions between +1/+1 and -1/-1 counters are a funky thing, so it is pretty common to be confused by them.

and persist is a pretty old ability, so there aren't any new cards with it. (perhaps if wizards decides to go back to lorwyn it might come back. but otherwise is it relegated to modern, vintage and legacy, which don't rotate when new sets come out.

if there is ever a rule that you don't understand, there are a few places to go. if you use facebook there is
MTG ask the judge
https://www.facebook.com/groups/MTGAskTheJudge/

if not there is also wizards site itself, which provides the comprehensive rule book.

you wanna know why persist died... undying XD

0

on individual creatures undying is the far more powerful ability, but oddly enough it isn't as useful in combo decks. lol... :)

0

its because its easy to remove -1/-1 counters to continually trigger persist but removing +1/+1 counters is more rare, still possible though, and so the undying doesn't get to trigger continually.
