Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker lovers, CHECK IT OUT!!! http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=376619

Quick switched Jinxed Idol for Culling Dias for the draw.
I loved this combo enough to give it a shot myself. http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=376619. Shirei + Contamination to lock up your opponents mana(unless black). Shirei + Grave Pact to wipe the board every turn. Shirei + Blasting Station for dd. 0 drops + Tendrils of Agony for some storm drain. Phyrexian Soulgorger + Dark Rit for a turn 1 8/8. By removing the Kobolds and filling in the spots with 0 cmc Artifacts it cuts down on targetable colored spells. The artifacts are stronger than the kobolds as well.
8 Mountains and 4 Landslide from main deck to sideboard. 4 Black Lotus, 4 Mox Ruby, and 4 Galvanic Blast from sideboard to main. Very very fast now. Draw ideas needed but I hope no opponent survives long enough to make this deck need them.
Sterling Grove is a great card to protect your enchantments and has a built in tutor. Check out this deck I use it in http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=252919. Hmmm. Playing around with your deck in my head so here are some thoughts. Remove 3 Brittle Effigy, 4 Thalid, 2 Viral Drake, 3 Corrupted Conscience, 4 Island, 4 Forest, 2 Forsee, 1 Counter Spell, 2 Vivisection. Add: 3 Contagion Engine, 4 Utopia Mycon, 2 Psychotrope Thallid, 3 Fists of Ironwood, 4 Oran-Rief, the Vastwood, 4 Tezzeret's Gambit, 2 Fuel for the Cause. Also you could alter the sideboard by removing: 2 Gleeful Sabotage, 2 Naturalize and adding 2 Aura Shards, 2 Sterling Grove. At least maybe you'll see what I'm going for or find some useful cards. Check out my Fungus deck here http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=245111.
If you like Contagion Engine, you should also look at Contagion Clasp.
I really enjoyed looking at this deck. I was hesitant when I saw the tribal stuff, but the merfolk work very smooth with this strategy. Spreading seas really bridges the gap between the spell and creature strats nicely. Merrow Commerce provides a great hit n run style attack/defense and with islandwalk that gets nasty. Spreading Seas and Silvergill Adept give you just enough draw. Merrow Reejerey is just perfect. The only thing I see that doesnt feel quiet right is Treachery. Even though its pretty much a free spell it seams kinda slow in this deck. By turn five with the balanced control/aggro strategy of this deck it should be close to over if not already finished. Maybe replace Treachery with some tutors to speed up pulling Spreading Seas and Merrow Commerce, or whichever merfolk is right for the situation. This deck is much smoother and more balanced than your version#1 in my opinion. Good job. Thanks for viewing my deck as well and feel free to look over the other decks I've worked on if you like. I love feedback and will see if I have any ideas for your other decks.
Keep the Leeches and look into Mole worms and Mana Skimmers. The land lock creatures are great if you use them to lock out all of one color land vs multi or simply as many as you can vs mono. If you're worried about using the locking creatures because you want the opponent to keep suiciding, you could use Deserted Temples to untap them. Ive made a similar deck here http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=364230.
I love it but this deck style just makes my head hurt when fine tuning. I saw the infertile lands deck once before and liked it for the mana web usage that works great in this. Having a hard time working in something for draw. I see your friend is using Rhystic Study but with my set up I plan to harass my opponents mana bad enough by the time I cast my first hand away that they avoid casting unless its a trump card, but thats when paralyze and power sink come in. Im not sure Rhystic will be fast enough to matter, but I can't think of anything better. Crystal Chimes is at the least a great Sideboard idea. Spreading seas looks good to help with draw and helps with mana control but I wanted to maximize the damage from the land harassing. Thanks for the links and hit me up if you have any more ideas.
If you add some unholy strength or edge of divinity it will give you an easy turn one 2/2, 2/3(flyer), 2/4, or 3/2.
Love the combo. You could scale back the creatures a bit and add tutors and dark rituals. You can drop contamination turn two and then Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker turn three fairly easily. You could try some black power ups like unholy strength for your weenies.
I proxy the Alpha lands. This deck can be a little slow sometimes but I love it when all the chain combos go off. Got a custom resin case for it, some trippy covers, and a large version of the Ghave, just for pimpness. lol
You may have missed quite a bit. I've tried to make a very balanced and quite synergetic deck. The vampires Ive chosen have synergy with the spells which are the primary strategy for this discard control deck. Artifacts 2x Scepter of Fugue: Permanent Discard control Creatures 3x Gatekeeper of Malakir: Kicker for creature kill to mop up creatures that get past the card control 3x Vampire Hexmage: Used to trigger Marit Lage turn 3. 3x Bloodhusk Ritualist: kicker for discard control 3x Guul Draz Assassin: This is a cheep to level permanent creature killer for added mop up 3x Sangromancer: Life gain thats based on synergy with discarding and creature killing. This deck does both. Enchantments 2x Quest for the Nihil Stone: Cheep quest synergetic with discard. Everyone thats every made a discard deck knows that unless your forcing your opponent to draw, it comes down to them playing the card they draw each turn. This deck only uses 3 cards that force draw so this card gives me a back up way to cause 5 life lose if this happens. 2x Liliana's Caress: Cheep Megrim. Synergetic with discard causing life lose ftw. Land 2x Dark Depths: Synergetic with Hexmage for the turn 3 Marit Lage. Cheep fast awesome combo. Ftw 16x Snow-Covered Swamp: Themes well with deck name and Marit Lage. Planeswalkers 1x Liliana Vess: Permanent discard control. Permanent tutor. Synergetic with creature kill. Spells 4x Funeral Charm: Cheep card with alot of options and extra options in any situation gives you better odds to win. This I believe is the only instant speed discard in the game. A pump up option for creature cheep shots, and swampwalk. Swampwalk can be a real blessing when two black decks go head to head. 4x Vampiric Tutor: Theme card and a very good cheep tutor to pull cards to combo like hexmage and Dark Depths, or just something situational. 3x Feast of Blood: Creature kill and lifegain on the cheep thats synergetic with vampires. 3x Inquisition of Kozilek: Cheep discard control. Easy way to kill an opponents combos before they hit the board. 3x Sign in Blood: Cheep force draw for more discard and life loss. And you could always take the life hit for the card draw since this deck has lifegain to balance it. 3x Distress: Discard control. Although I may replace these with Blackmail. To me this all combines together very well for a balanced array of the best abilities that black has to offer: Control, Creature kill, Lifedrain(gain/loss), and Tutoring. Its a cheep cmc deck and gives you tons of situation options. The snowy vampire cult of Marit Lage theme is fun too and I like the name. I hope this sheds some light on at least my reasoning if you still disagree on the synergy. Thanks for the view and post. I do need to look at the newer sets to make sure I'm not missing better card options for main deck and I need to finish the sideboard.
Gotta love Fungi! http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=245111
I'd also switch out the megrims for Liliana's Caress. 1 cheeper cmc.
I like your style. Warped devotion really brings the control and discard together. I'd drop the quests for 2 more invisible stalkers, but keep the Dimir cutpurses. You should look at Funeral Charm for instant speed discard and a little pump up for your unblockables, Check these out: http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=361987 & http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=251541.
Hey there. Id suggest looking into using curiosity for draw along with your Tandem Lookouts. It would allow you to dump cards you're using for draw like Thought Scour and Gryff Vanguard. With so much cheep creature bounce( Unsummon, Vapor snag, and Æther Adept) Id drop Sleep. Not much point in having a 4 cmc spell to tap all of your opponents creatures if your not letting them stay out. You might consider scaling back your current enchantments as well for the same reason. Narcolepsy still gives an opportunity between untap and upkeep to use abilities so its only really good at crippling a high power attacker. That would be fine but so long as you can keep bouncing its better to stall your opponent by forcing him to take the time and manna to recast said creature before locking it up. Also as cool as Phyrexian Ingester can be Id drop it. Your average creature power is low so whatever you feed the ingester isn't going to give him much of a boost and at a 7 cmc is not cost effective enough for a deck thats designed to be cheep and fast. You should look into adding Boomerangs or Eye of Nowhere so that you can bounce none creature cards including land. If you start bouncing land turn two you can really stall out your opponents manna progression and its always nice to throw a wrench into thier plans by bouncing any permanent that might be part of a combo strategy. Id also replace the Augury owls with Sage Owl as it gives you 4 scry rather than 3. If you're able to drop some of your 4 and 3 cmc cards it will help speed your deck up and lower the manna curve so you can remove some land and add in even more cheep control. Hope this is helpful and not just a boring rant to read. Thanks for the upload and feel free to check out my bounce deck. http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=361987
