I really like graveyard shenanigans, and this is my attempt at such in Standard. The synergy of Return to the Ranks and Chord of Calling is too much to pass up. I was looking for a finisher in my colors, and Ashen Rider fit the bill. Even if it only lasts long enough for one turn, that is two permanents exiled. If Athreos is still out, more shenanigans. Unfortunately, this deck suffers from a weakness to Deicide, and I need a way to keep my little guys alive until I can get a worthwhile Nykthos activation. Just a rough sketch, but I am excited about the possibilities.
I spend the first few turns filling my graveyard with enough juicy targets for Return to the Ranks. The bonus is if Athreos is in play, you can return a Genesis or Mistcutter Hydra for a quick lightning bolt, because I doubt your opponent would want to put those in your hand. The overall low cost of the deck prevents whiffs on Genesis Hydra's effect as well.Pharika gets rid of cards in your graveyard you can't return to play, like Nyx Weaver and Athreos, while also giving you a barrier against incoming attacks. The enchantments give you free, or cheap, creatures. Get lots and lots of tokens, use your convoke spells, and wreck things. Having devotion is less important than filling the board and forcing your opponent to make tough choices.

Question if you return to the ranks on a hydra aren't dying back because they are 0/0?

The hydras would die, but if Athreos is out then that interaction is fun. You get it back in your hand, or your opponent takes three damage.
