Deck Description

Ghoultree;

I cant believe this became a top deck, thanks so much guys, all of your input is much appreciated, the only reason its getting good is because of this site:)

Edit one- Removed ambush vipers for dream twists as i needed some extra self mill power, also there was
little need for the spot removal the viper provided.

Edit two- Scraped two islands for the new utility alchemist refuge. I got the idea right before seeing comment saying that they might work, it was right, plus with the birds and the harbors i usually don't need the island, and if i do i just use dawntreder elk.

Edit three- Took out the merfolk mesmerists for civilized scholar, its just a better card.

Edit four- Removed an alchemists refuge for one more island as they are helpful but anything more than one is way to much.

Edit five- Took out civilized scholars for swiftfoot boots for protection and a faster tempo. I got the idea from a comment, works well.

Edit six- After everyone bugging me to, i put in two cagebreakers. These are very Functional if the tree wont get the job bone, plus there scary!

Edit seven- After playing around i found that playsets of the artfull dodge and the trackers instincts where a bit much. I cut them both to three and added gnaw to the bone, as well as made one spot for the cagebreakers.

Edit Eight- TOTAL REVAMP

Edit One (post revamp)- Changed side to contain dungeon geists, these are awesome in the titan match-up as well against anything with one big-n-nasty creature.

Deck discussion for Splintertree

Nice, my buddy was just thinking about a way to make this same kind of deck. I think the main difference is he wanted to have a couple Kessig Cagebreakers in there as finishers, but I think yours is pretty sufficient!
Nice touch with the Dawntreader Elk - it finds your island and fuels your graveyard at the same time! (and at the same time makes sure your islands don't get pitched) Have you considered an Alchemist's Refuge? It would be great for dropping a Ghoultree or Splinterfright at the end of their turn.

I'd appreciate any feedback on my GW humans, if you could take a look. Thanks!

This is really nice (: I usually don't like the whole mill your self deal, but this actually has some potential. But since your going to stockpile your graveyard, I'd suggest more cards to embrace that. Gnaw to the bone maybe a nice sideboard card. Feed the pack can also be nice. You could sac a ghoul tree for 10 2/2 wolf tokens. That's just nasty xD looks really fun. Thanks for helping me out with my deck too (:

Oh no problem at all :) Siding gnaw is actually a pretty good idea, i think i will try it. And now that i think of it feed the pack could possibly work as well, ten wolfs at the end step is nothing to be embarrassed about, so maybe a one-of or something. Thanks very much all notes are greatly appreciated :)

I played a deck very similar to this awhile ago. I found ghoultree to be cool, but a little inefficient compared to Kessig cagebreakers. I found mesmerist wasn't as good as deranged assistant. It gives you mana and you mill one. Instead of artful dodge use 2 more dream twist and 2 leaks or vapor snags to give yourself a little control

I'm a huge fan of Mr Splinter. The problem is that ist easy to disrupt your tempo with some spot removal. Id try a few things that make it harder to kill your creatures. Ascetesism or maybe swiftfoot boots as a two of could work. Hope I was able to help. +1

Holy crap i cannot even believe i never thought of swiftfoot myself, thank you so much, it actually adds room for a win condition one turn early :) I will definitely try using two of them asap :)

Sweet play with Mulch and like other people have said, the Elk awesome use for the elk as well! Obviously since I haven't played the deck I'm not sure exactly how many cards you're going to end up with in your graveyard by the end. But i'm wondering whether a few too many cards would end up in the graveyard. I agree with other people saying add Cagebreakers so maybe the thing you could remove would be Twist or tracker's instincts. Although I'm torn because I like the flashback function they have.

If any of you have time I'd love to get some feedback on a deck that is very much in the process of being built. It's not too complex, but any words of wisdom would be much appreciated.

the deck rocks! i tried some sample draws...the only problem i noticed was the fact that sometimes if i was dueling in real i would take a mulligan. Apart from that the deck is really good and fluent...

Guys if any of you would like to see an alternative...with all respect to hunteradj i would like to check this deck out! :)

I've had splinter deck since he came out and just recently updated mine for avacyn. I have a bit different approach however with less milling cards and more cheap creatures that I can use for blocking (I want them to die anyways to feed the GY)

Have a look and let me know what you think, I like your version, but I prefer more creatures :D

I think the artful drodge is useless here you should run some control instead like vapor snag and mana leak.

But using one mana to make a ghoultree unblockable, thats a free ten damage, and with its flashback he can cast it even if it gets milled out. This card is a win win

Hey man, love the deck!
I've been working on a build similar to this for a while now. I like the idea of Dawntreader Elk and have worked it into my build. Also might try to work in the Swiftfoot Boots idea as well, at least into the board.
Some cards I have found useful: Thought Scour, Armored Skaab. Just some ideas. I didn't like Dream Twist that much. Overall great deck! Sideboard ideas include Beast Within, Vapor Snag, Silent Departure.

Oh I've got a new idea! 1-2 garruk relentless would really fit here. When you play it you can kill a llanowar (+1 creature in graveyard) then use the -2 ability sec a creature (+1 in graveyard) and search a finisher like ghoultree (it's alredy turn 4-5 and you just add two creatures to the grevayard so i think you can cast it). This deck is really really great i think it became a tournament quality deck! :)

Nice concept although I feel that a few adjustments could be made that would increase this decks potential. For instance I feel that the lanowar elves aren't necessary as you are running mulch and the dawntreader elk, and BOP's. Instead of those you could run some Brindle Boars, a good tree drop and you can sac it to gain four life. Also the Artful dodges don't seem to work well either, you should definitely be playing a full play set of Tracker's Instincts as that help get creatures in your Graveyard.

I have a beast graveyard deck that you can check out:

Your deck doesn't have enough lands. I know you have things like Birds and Elk, but in the current standard format, there is a lot of removal for creatures and ways to shut down ramp like that (Dismember, Go for the Throat, Doom Blade, Deathmark, Mana Leak, Mental Misstep, Feeling of Dread, Huntmaster of the Fells, Galvanic Blast, Gut Shot, Garruk Relentless) but there is very little ways to destroy/shut down lands. That's not to say that those ramp cards to not belong in this deck, and the Elk is actually a really great choice.

However, I would either trade the Elk for Viridian Emissary (less weak to removal because you still get your land, costs less, even though it can be harder to actually get the effect to happen) or trade 2 Llanowar Elves for an Island and a Forest or just two Forests. Personally I think that getting 2 more lands is better than swapping for Viridian Emissary, but either of these would make the deck better against removal and therefore more reliable.

0
Posted 03 June 2012 at 16:03

Definitely agree with the Emissary over the Elk. The extra toughness doesn't matter, because most players aren't going to waste a spell on taking out the Emissary.

It's a fun concept, but in the end I don't think it will work very well.

I think you'll take a while to get enough creature cards in your graveyard, and even when you get there, the payoff is not the great.

Also, you have nothing at all to prevent your opponent from doing whatever he wants. No removal spells of any kind, and no control.

well i do see what your saying, but for now its been going 4 and one at the fnms around town. the removal is in my board, i just haven't posted it yet. also, my tree comes out turn three pretty regular, with the dodge its half your life.but thank-you for your input.

0

How would you get it down on turn three ?

Best case scenario:

Turn 1: Land + Bird/elf
Turn 2: Land + Another bird/elf + mulch/instict (1-2 creatures in graveyard)
Turn 3: Land + ? (tree costs 6-7 mana to cast, and you only have 5)

Id swap 4 looters for 4 strangleroot geists or at least 2 to help give you earl game pressureuntil you can get splinter and treeonline. Doing that id also move the gnaw to sb and drop the dream twists and either a mulch or trackers intinct whichever you like less for 2 gsz and 2 garruk, relentless. Farmigomikacs was right he has a lot of nice synergies with your deck he gives you some removal and his ultimate is a huge threat in your build.

1

why not put virridian emissary, its just as good as dawntreader if not better imo

strangleroot is also a good one as well so that you wont get pressured by fast aggro decks

lastly why i dont see boneyard wurm here?

i actually have an answer to all of your questions :) The elk can sacrifice him self, fueling my grave, strangle root wont hit the grave on the first try, (though i do agree it is very powerful) and the wurm is not here because i have splinterfright, and thats weak to the spell bomb, so the wurms may die to easy. but thank you, and i may actually try the giests.

so you want creatures in the yard...and yet no armored scaab or deranged assistant. Deranged helps you get mana... other than that could be ok. need to test it at an FNM. Ghoul out early enough and r/b aggro might start sweating.

I would think about maybe replacing the elves with Deranged Assistant? It's good and gives you an extra mill aswell as the mana. Also forbidden alchemy is really amazing in self mill decks. I would also reccomend Gnaw to the Bone in 4, the spider summoner in 4 (Can't remember it's name!) and a couple of Boneyard worms to use as early meatshields.

I like your deck and I was planning to do a Splinterfright deck myself with the 4 artful dodge, since it is a really good card.
I would suggest the following:
-4 LLanowar elves
-2 Swiftboots
-2 Alchemist apprentice
+3 Deranged Assistant (Mana and self milling what else do you want?)
+2 WingCrafter or Artful dodge or Elgaud Shieldmate(More evasion or proteccion to your fatties)
+2 Forest
+1 Island
Wathever you do you must increase the land count (I bet 60% or more of your matches start with mulligann or mana screwed)

i get what you mean but i would consider virridian more coz of its ability to put a land on the battlefiled when it dies, you just have to keep attacking your opponent with it and he will highly consider killing it coz its does 2 dmg to him, while with the elk, yes you can control and time on when your gonna sac it but it just doesnt give you the speed you need to be effective coz of the fact that you need to spend 1(G) to sac it when with the virridian you dont... hope im not annoying you with the subject lol

Have you considered thought scour- maybe instead of the apprentice- I see how it can be useful as a creature for your graveyard, especially one you want there, but 2 self mill with 26 creatures is a decent shot at getting in a creature or something you can flashback (6 of those). Also its one cheaper and instant speed, as well as being a potential splinterfright combat trick in a pinch if you are desperate.

0
Posted 09 June 2012 at 06:20

Also, you may wish to up the land count a couple- 20 is a bit low with this high a curve, even with the accelerators and the mulches, if you want to be consistent. Maybe drop a couple elves for lands- it may make the deck a little less powerful in some situations, but it may make it more consistent. I don't really know how it plays as is, so use your own discretion.

Hi, ive actually been using this deck on cockatrice, its fantastic, the combo works amazingly well and quite often, i always get to play power cards sometimes early on, the flashback arftul dodge and trackers instincts are key. Ghoul tree is really easy to get out. and cage bringers is deadly. so far i have only one contention with this deck.

you cant protect the powercards. alot of the time its only 1 card that is powerful, the others are there to die, so i might have a ghoul tree out, or cage bringers or splinterfrieght.

mostly i lose when someone has the ability to a. copy my card. i played a guy who used phantasmal image on my boneworm. and could target creatures and exile them as long as the card remained in play. so when ever i bought out a strong creature he would just exile it. what i needed was some protection for those key cards. because you cant keep many creatures on the board, as they are better in the graveyard, you need ghoultree and splinter for power, and kessian for numbers. but if they get hit. its game over. i would have had nearly 14 wolves if i had attacked, but as soon as he could, he exiled it. and i lost one of my only cards in play.

but this deck ROCKS!!!!

I really love this deck and use the list you have here almost to the letter. However, my deck has 62 cards in it instead of 60. I added 2 Garruk Relentless. He is by no means vital to the deck, but i like that fact that his ulti. gives me an additional win condition and that the deathtouch wolves can come in handy. In your opinion is he worth running? or is he just slowing the deck down?

Ok. In that case its not a bad idea to have the one. In case you couldn't tell, i really like running this deck so i wanna try and better understand the changes. Do you find you can still get through your opponents defenses without artful dodge? And were the swiftfoot boots too slow to be very useful?

Well, to be honest the first build of this deck contained a full play-set of artful dodge, however, the better way to do it is to use the wurm and the tree as huge ass walls to block titans and stuff, then use splinter fright to trample them to death, use mindshrieker to do a surprise flight win, use kessig to swarm with wolves, use spider spawning to overwhelm them, or my fav, use the garuks final to make your wienies huge and beat-down. :)

Now as far as the boots go i might work them back in, however, i do want this deck for longevity so i am trying to make it so nothing will cycle out come October. But they do work awesome as far as making the looter loot quicker, or the tree swing faster, plus no fear of go for the throat, so no i think they were awesome, but i prefer to side board control rather than put in boots that you may mill by mistake :/

BTW! There is a chance that lighting graves may be reprinted in ravnica:) so look out for that cuz it would speed this deck way up.

Thank-you

Thanks for your comment on my Splinterfright deck http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=278714

I didn't realize this deck could be played as aggro. Thanks for the recommendations. I have been playing it as more of a survival until I get my win-con off. Screeching Skaab makes sense to put those creatures into the 'yard faster.

Grafdigger's Cage is still the pits against this deck. Good thing for Naturalize.

oh yea absolutely :) and yes the grafdiggers cage really slows you down, another threat is the infamous nihil spell bomb. we have two answers to that for now and they are stony silence and mental misstep. So if your afraid of them (i am) then i would work them into your side as well :P

A possible nice sideboard card would be ground seal (when it comes out), this would protect you from both of those for relatively cheap.

My friend had me design a U/G deck to go with a deck like this for 2 HG. Would you take a look at it?

Would you replace the BOP with Somberwald Sage? or Arbor Elf? Arbor elf is cheaper, but can only untap forest. Sage is good, but kind of slow

Just had a thought while going through spares. Have you considered postmortem lunge? You could return a Cagebreaker with haste. You would still get wolves. Only problem is, that would be its only function. Doesn't help in many other situations unless its super late game and a big splinterfright could pull a win.

It was just a thought. There is definitely better stuff to run. I just really like unexpected wins :-)

When RtR comes out, you can make the deck more black focused, and grisly salvage will fit right in. Lotleth troll could also work

Hey Hunteradj182, I fiddled with the ideas you and the others had recommended to my Self-Mill Splinterfright deck. Wouldn't mind if you can check it out.
