Deck discussion for Budget Grixis Control (Post-M13 Pre-RtoR Standard)

Huh, it does need tweaking, you should try to make it so you have more play sets of cards instead of only one/two copies of quite a few cards. for example, take out 2 cower in fear and add a tragic slip and a doom blade. This is just my opinion though, i feel like it adds reliability to the deck, but go with whatever works best for you

hmm. that's true. i was thinking of ditching the 2 thought scours for another mana leak when i find one, ('cause right now i only have 3) and another kill spell like, yeah, doom blade. the cower in fears though, i was thinking that if i were to replace them, i'd need to swap in other possible board sweepers. 'cause i've noticed during play tests against more creature-spam decks that i usually have trouble with swarms of cheap weenies. what would you suggest? and also, are the creatures okay? i was thinking of adding a bloodgift demon for the card draw, since consecrated sphinx is kinda expensive. thanks for the suggestions, by the way ^_^

hmm i think a bloodgift demon would be better for ur deck. lookin at ur deck here, ur too big creature heavy which can hurt a deck like urs. control doesnt really like that too much lol. i also agree with masa bout adding in so more focus to ur deck. hm seems like 2 mana is a lil lower here too. id find a way to make room for at least 2 more land maybe 3.

I think maybe throw in some ramp, like sphere of the suns to get to your bigger creatures faster.
Also since you are playing grixis colors, throw in a few Nicol Bolas!!!!

Swap Galvanic Blast for Pillar of Flame, you get zero benefit from the metal craft and the exile component of the PIllar of Flame can really screw up undying. Other than that I like it a lot. Super annoying. Nicol Bolas would fit right in there. Please take a look at my WG Flicker deck when you have time, your comment on my BW Budget Token deck was spot on!

yeah, Pillar of Flame's exile is great for dealing with undying dudes, but i feel it's more of a sideboard card than a main decker, mainly 'cause it's a sorcery, and not an instant. I'm mainly trying to get most of my spells to go off on my opponent's combat phase or end step, to free up enough mana for both a creature drop and spells to protect it on my own turn.

as for Bolas, i'd love to have a couple copies, it's just that it's way outta budget for me. hahahaha maybe i could split a Bolas vs Ajani duel deck with someone? haha ^_^

I suggest using more mana-producing artifacts like vessel of endless rest or some gilded lotus'. Also y not use blasphemous act instead of whipflare and cower in fear. also y not add some more sorin's vengeance and 2 sorin markovs

Its nice overall. if you dont mind i'll post the link to my deck here.

i was thinking of including those artifacts, but with all the artifact hate people are running in their decks these days, i'm not so sure. but i have been considering it. also, with regards to blasphemous act, i'd love to have copies of it, as it is an excellent board sweeper, unfortunately it's a 'lil outta budget.

sorin's vengeance is meant to be a back up win con, especially against decks that don't run counter magic, and i'd like to have sorin in, but he's no longer standard, and he too is unfortunately out of budget.

thanks for the comment, though. ^_^

here i am.

a grixis control deck was in my mind since the reprint of Nicol Bolas in M13....even if I am aware it is highly unplayable :)

but magic is fun too, or not?

therefore, I would make some changes, throwing in:
- Sphere of the suns (at least 3)
- Dissipate instead of cancel
- Negate or essence scatter (this has to be done in accordance with your local metagame)
- Ponder - you really need it - at least in 4 copies
- Mutilate / Black Sun's Zenith instead of Cower in Fear
- Tribute to hunger instead of barted in blood (more flexible as the game goes on)
- Red Sun's Zenith
- Nicol Bolas as well :)

I would remove, instead:
- Gem of Becoming
- Sorin's Vengeance
- Thought Scour
- Barter in Blood
- Cower in Fear
- Volcanic Geyser

I think you should build deck capable of controlling the game (mass removing creature) in the first 4-5 rounds and then protect your high costs creatures.

This is just my 2 cents ;)

yeah, i am aware that the deck badly needs more mana sources, and though i'd love to add in sphere of the suns, i dont have any copies, and it's about to phase out of standard as well, and i'd like as much as possible for any future additions to the deck to be coming from the new blocks. same goes for the two sun's zeniths and ponder. i was planning to swap dissipate in, once i had acquired some copies, along with tribute to hunger. mutilate would be great, but the presence of two other basic lands might hinder it's effectiveness. negate and essence scatter are ready to be sideboarded in, should the need arise. and bolas, well, he's kinda out of budget for me. haha

thanks for the suggestions, though! i'll be looking in to them during play tests.

cut cower in fear, swap cancel for dissipate, magmaquake over volcanic geyser, and cut thought scour and put in an essence scatter/negate

Maybe swap the whipflare for a rolling temblor, or blasphemous act. Again though RtR might have something that could suit you better. But until then... I would suggest one of those cards. :)

I like the deck so far, but the title states that it is post m13? A lot of the scars stuff will cycle out. I think that you should switch cancel's into dissipates. They are the same thing but they exile. As for galvanic blast if you are trying to not use cards that will cycle out, consider pillar of flame although it is a sorcery, or searing spear. the thought scour's I feel you should keep, because it is a one mana draw card and it mills. It would work great against miracle decks. you want quick draw esecially at the end of their turn so you can be ready on your turn. You want to rummage through your deck while maintaining field control. I feel that you might want to use tribute to hunger instead of barter in blood. You areadly have things like whipflare and tragic slip to hit all the weenie creatures and then tribute to hunger can take out the big creature that is left and give you life. The last thing I can think of is maybe adding vampire night hawks this might push it over the top a bit, however it does create great field control as well as life gain and easy points of damage and a chump blocker. It is not really needed but I would consider it as a possibility.

I like the deck so far! Pretty good, If I have anything else to add I'll make sure to let you know. Could you also take a look at one of my decks if you got time? It's my bant smash deck,! This is one deck i want to go to tournaments with so if you could! Thanks!!!

yup. post M13, pre RtoR, so it includes cards from M12 and SoM block that will be standard until October, before Return to Ravnica comes in and M12 and SoM phase out.

also, i'll make changes to the deck only when i acquire the cards i need.
i don't wanna list cards i dont own yet, even if i know i'm about to get them.

thanks!

I am always a fan of budget decks and I see this one could be good. However a few cards seem like they aren't really needed: Thought Scour could be replaced with Gitaxian Probe, unless you have some type of Surgical Extraction card that would make it useful to mill a few cards. With Probe you can have the option to pay 2 life and see your opponents hand so you can try to get the feel of his/her deck.
Maybe add in Vapor Snags to fight against Delver decks (if they are big around your area). I do like the mana leaks in the deck, they become a surprise around my area because nobody has played them for so long.

I just thought that you could also add in Corrosive Gale (fight those pesky flyers) to the sideboard.
