Deck discussion for U/W Angel Control!

I saw your deck in the forums, and you said you wanted advice. Here is my input on this deck:

-You only have three artifacts in your entire deck. You should therefore not use Indomitable Archangel, which would need all three artifacts in play at once to do anything besides be a vanilla flier. 2x Consecrated Sphinx would be a better option in this deck as a more control-ish flier to complement Baneslayer.

-Another strong Flying creature, especially with equipments, is Squadron Hawk. You should probably run 4x in your deck. Also consider adding two more Grand Abolishers.

-Oblivion Ring is better than Arrest, as it is not limited to removing creatures, and Venser cannot destroy it outright. In the same way, Into the Roil is better than Vapor Snag, and Mana Leak and Spell Pierce are generally better than Dispel and Turn Aside. UW Control needs to be versatile: the control element of your deck is far too narrow in application for tournament play.

Keep working on this deck. UW Control is a strong deck archetype, and is easy to get into price-wise with the recent bannings of Jace and Stoneforge Mystic.

Wow, thorough feedback, thanks. Your input highlights my major design decision: minimize CMC heavies. I avoided stacking artifacts and kept my control and creature cards on a low CMC curve because I don't feel comfortable "hoping" for a good mana draw.

+ I love Consecrated Sphinx -- the problem: mana cost. I'm looking for a strong flyer to fill my 4 CMC slot. Should I scrap it and fill it with Squadron Hawks to up the aggro? What's the point of hawks with no artifacts?

+ If hawks, should I run more artifacts? If so, what do you suggest?

+ And what do I sub out, to add more artifacts?

In answer to your questions, Hawks can work reasonably well even without heavy equipment usage, as they are a powerful card advantage machine on their own. If you want to use a Cawblade build, though, sub out the Kemba's Skyguard(not a very spectacular creature) and perhaps the Vapor Snags for additional equipments. Sword of Body and Mind and Sword of Vengeance(which you already have) are both excellent equipment choices in standard for under $10, and synergize well with flying creatures.

Indomitable Archangel certainly fills an important mana slot in your deck, but unless you have at least ten or so artifacts, you will not be using the ability very often. You should probably go ahead and use Squadron Hawks instead, and perhaps consider Day of Judgment as your 4-drop on the curve.

Another 4-drop that will help your mana curve is Solemn Simulacrum. If you run it, it will stretch your curve so that you can afford to have more CMC 5+ fliers in your deck.
