Deck discussion for Black/Red Discard Std

This is the problem with discard decks. I find that once i've made my opponent discard most of their hand (megrim or not, it's still effective), there's a lot of dead cards left in my hand. The quest for the nihil stone however makes that okay, since their hand will usually be empty. Looks solid, just not my kind of deck. I gave ya a 7.

I'm currently working on this deck, think im gonna throw Liliana in, and Hypnotic and Guul Draz Specters, along with Bloodchief Ascension. Thanks for the comment!

Cear is right.

megrim decks only function if there are cards left in your opponent's hand... and between them playing spells and you making them discard, you're looking at an inconsistent and slow win.

i found out long ago that the only really viable win with megrim is with three cards:

memory jar
wheel and deal
windfall

all three deal massive damage with megrim (up to 14 in one go) and then refill their hand so you can do it all again. two of these spells is game over - so all you have to do is stall them for a couple of turns with some cheap counters and destroy spells. simple.

so my advice, splash blue, use wheel and deal, and windfall, and memory jar.
maybe as well you could take advantage of the extra colour and use a few cheap counters (mana leak, memory lapse etc.) to keep you in the game against aggro decks.... maybe even throw in a dark ritual or two and a drain life to keep you in the game or for a surprise finish.

Hey Prukle, thx for the advice. Think I'm gonna build a Blue/Black DC/Mill deck later on. Gonna stay mono black with this one, also keepin it Std legal. Any advice on this Mono Black Std, or on the Blue/Black DC/Mill is greatly appreciated! and yes, hymn is fantastic, but not in Std :( Does anyone know of any way to get black mana in Std faster? I mean Cabal Coffers and Dark Rituals are a nogo in Std, so what other options are there if any?

i'd add in 4x liliana's caress. it's basically megrim for one less mana.

also actually sticking liliana in your deck is an amazing way to keep tempo rolling with discard. means you don't have to rely on having spells in hand to be doing damage.

drop bloodchief ascension. you're most likely to be doing enough damage with your win conditions. instead stick some board sweeping spells in there. 4x damnation is pretty much an auto-include in this deck. you have almost no board control here, you need to work on that!

in this deck, you NEED to have 4x sign in blood. the fact that it combos perfectly with underworld dreams/mind rot/megrim/liliana's caress is too good to miss. drop two of the howling mines for this.

also if you've decided not to play standard, get rid of the mind rot and throw in hymn to tourach.

In standard, there isn't a ton of black acceleration. You could use the Eldrazi Spawn cards (there are some good ones in black) or maybe even Nirkana Revenant (though she's quite expensive - mana-wise). Everflowing chalice is also an option.

Another great way to deal a ton of damage with megrim is to use Wheel of Fate with the cascade ability. Really, though, Windfall, Wheel and Deal, and Memory Jar are the way to go. I also like Teferi's Puzzle Box and the hilarious Forced Fruition.

Honestly I don't think a standard megrim deck is viable. The fact that they reprinted it is almost a tease. As for acceleration, StorkMSU had some good ideas. The black kill-get eldrazi cards are great, and everflowing chalice is pretty good. Nirkana Revenant though . . . whoo.

Well, I thought about Nirkana, and the Eldrazi cards, but they are too expensive. And judging from the speed of the decks at the tournament last week, I cant afford hi cast cost stuff. I made several changes to the deck though, take a look and let me know what you think. Thx! :)

Another idea could be to splash red and run burning inquiry. It helps get more damage across when your opponent is without a hand.

Hey Stork, thx for the idea on the Burning Inquiry, I made alot of changes, and played 15 hands with this deck, lets just say it is not a nice deck! :)

If you're already splashing red, you should definitely trade the Mind Rots for Blightning. You may also want to look into some removal. Against Jund, Deathmark is a viable option. You could also run some terminates. You might want to run an entire playset of Howling Mine also. Another Quest for the Nihil Stone would be useful (and a playset will only run a few bucks - playset for a dollar plus shipping on Cardshark.com). To make room, I'd drop some of your one-offs. To summarize, I'd say bring in 4 Blightning, 4 Terminates, 2 Howling Mines, and one Quest for the Nihil Stone. To make room, drop 4 Mind Rots, the Desecrated Earth, the Mind Shatter, the Duress, the Mire Toll, the Mind Sludge, and probably 2 Hypnotic Specter. You'll have to also fix your mana base with a few Mountains. Not sure why the Savage Lands is there either.

Ok, I've been working on a discard deck for a while now. Got it pretty decent. I noticed people saying the problem with discard is what to do when they are out of cards. i use that to my advantage. Guul Draz Spector is a scary sight for 4 mana on top of the quest for nil stone. Also Hellfire Mongrel is a good add just for some quick damage. And Lava Claw reaches are amazing for when there is nothing better to do, I'd replace the refuges with those. I am in the process of trying Suffer the Past, for damage and lifegain. Not sure how it's gonna work. oh and keep an eye on 2011, Illiana's cards and Temple Bell are pretty epic.
