Deck Description

Here be dragons and here be brews!! Dragons of Tarkir has totally re-shaped standard and its such a wonderful time to be brewing! Of course these big bad dragons are cleaning house! I'm going to talk today about jumping on the bandwagon or preparing the defences and donning your most inflammable sleeves! So lets see what's happening!

So with the new set making an impact, lets analyse what's hitting up the top deck page (not the hot page, that still sucks) because not only have the main stream decks got stronger, or killed(!), there are a tonne of new decks and usually the title is "X Dragons" be it R/G Dragons or Esper dragons. Dragons seem to be fitting best into either control or midrange, and they are really ripping up standard, even making G/W into Bant because of the sheer power of Oujitai which is impressive that 1 card is so powerful it offsets the weakening of the mana base. So is it a good idea to jump o board? Well maybe, dragons are very powerful and they really are going to dominate for a while... but wait a second lets calm down, Abzan doesn't need dragons and Mardu already uses dragons so we can carry on and just adapt our decks.

However, every deck needs to adapt to the huge overhaul that Dragons has brought, which brings us onto the linking, as a little interlude I just need to talk about leaving links to my decks. For standard articles, please only leave STANDARD COMPETITIVE (or aimed to be competitive) because some people leave casual decks- which people should know i dislike, sorry but thats just me!

So now we have digressed, should we build some sweet dragon decks? Well, yes! Unless you already own an Abzan deck then why the hell not?! Its awesome fun however it does come with a warning! Dragons are crazy fun and can be so competitive, but that is at a price of they might not be so good. For example, this deck does struggle a little bit in the mana base department, however when it gets going, it wins a lot, so you just have to weed out the dodgy decks until you find, or brew, one that suits you and that can win! However make sure you can understand and react to the metagame, there is a lot of splash damage right now, so mana confluence does hurt a lot!

Sorry about my long break guys, I was in Mexico and now have revision, so its tough to sit down and write these over an essay! Hope you like it though!

Above all... keeeeeeeeeep Brainstorming!

How to Play

You dragon them in the face obviously! Keep the board clear then swamp it with dragons!

Deck discussion for Brainstorming: Here be Dragons

I think you should drop white for green. 4 Caryatids and 4 Coursers right over Mantis Rider and Orator of Ojutai.
Why? Because Courser has a fat butt that really slows down aggro and gives you card advantage by helping you not top deck lands. Caryatid also helps stop this and helps ramp and color fix for your beefy dudes. A turn 3 Thunderbreak feels oh so good.
You could then drop Ojutai for another stormbreath and thunderbreak. Or keep them in and rely on Caryatid and Confluence to color fix for you.
The reason I recommend these things is because Ojutai is an all star in control but seems fairly mediocre in this deck.

But I'm a but biased and love playing green, so +1 from me.

Considering ojutai was the single most played card at pro tour dragons of tarkir, I disagree

I think there certainly is that deck but I lose crackling doom, which is now the best removal spell out there because it kills Caryatid and stops what you're saying and it doesn't target so gets around thunderbreak regent, also ye Ojutai is crazy powerful, but Atarka isn't too far behind in power level, there certainly is that deck out there, especially because then you get to play siege rhino!

How many decks played ojutai that weren't esper control? if this deck is good in the meta you're in then cool. just saying that ojutai shines in control and is decent everywhere else.
If they turn 3 crackling doom to kill your caryatid then that is a doom not aimed at thunderbreak. Crackling doom was good because it killed siege rhino. Now we have roast. Yes you take 3 to kill an opposing thunderbreak, but unless you're under 8 life, 3 damage is nothing.
There is a reason the only top 8 deck to see ojutai was control.

A lot of decks besides control played Ojutai actually... Bant, Jeskai, etc. Did you even watch the Pro Tour?

Although I will agree that the deck needs better mana and caryatid is the easy way to get it.

Exactly. Although I was rather disappointed that Narset didn't see hardly any play at all, but ojutai really stupid out. I personally liked that exchange of Dragonlords that happened lol

Maybe 4 Shamans instead of using 4 Coursers

Doesn't really float my boat if i rip it late game, at least the orator can draw me a card and sit there as a flying blocker, although orator has been so amazing!

really nice deck I was curious as to why your not using oujati's command it can come in handy or sideboard ugin

I'm with Vaan on this one; think you need Dragonlord's Servant or else you may fall behind on tempo against aggro and control decks even the Thunderbreak costs 4 which means control has up to turn 4 to get 3 land and counters/removal which doesn't seem unlikely, if you want to keep mana open for a counter then you're looking at turn 6 dragons at the earliest and giving control 6 turns with no pressure doesn't appeal.
Versus aggro decks again not sold on your tempo against them; Dragonic Roar is fine removal for early game but might want to consider Magma Jet for Crackling Doom it's easy cast it'll help vs many early attackers and help find the right land/spell to boot.

You should put Utvara Hellkite in here!! That thing is so nasty just by itself but with more dragons it would definitely be an end gamer, ahh curses it isn't standard anymore...

Swiftwater cliffs and bloodfell caves are good double lands that give you life but come into play tapped, also still standard

Shifting to mardu dragon's is what I'd do.Crackling doom is THE best removal spell going and is not played because no one can figure out a shell. The main problem is mitigating early life loss, foul tongue is good but not enough. There's a deck on here with two soulfire grandmaster that might help. You lose Oujtai and scorn but are more proactive.

I actually prefer Mardu Midrange, and that's defo the shell for crackling doom, its what I play but ye thats a legitimate strategy, I just wanted to be a little silly with dragons and still make a good deck

I have a buddy who plays a modern G/R dragons and I've played my standard mardu midrange against it. I run a full set of charm and crackling doom and believe me, they come in handy. I'm still looking for a specific modern build that is versatile enough to warrant taking it apart and rebuilding it to modern, but once I do, I plan to run a full set of crackling doom. I've toyed with many ideas but none seem strong enough to hold up in modern yet as a competitive threat

What about thoughtseize to get rid of a Crackling doom right off the start? I'm not super competitive but if you are running black and not caring too much about life loss why not?

I think it looks fun. It probably would not hold up well in my FNM because of the ridiculous amount of control decks that would just cancel all the dragons out, but it seems like it'd be fun anyway! :)

Here's one I've been working on for my area.

It can counter fight and they will run out of counters way before you run out of dragons, plus 7 cards of the SB go in to fight control!

0

There are two people who run practically nothing but counters where I play. It's so bothersome, because I also run a heavy control deck as my primary, so its just like... a control war, where they counter my few creatures and then we just stare each other down. It's more of a self-mill loss in those matches than anything else.

Oh in relation to your deck, I'd move towards a more devotion based strategy, because squirting out 4/4 dragons with a tap of a Nykthos is pretty damn good alongside tremors and Purphoros

I'd be dropping mantis rider for dragonlord's servant. Maybe try to squeeze in some stubborn denial as it's handy to protect thunderbreak's and icefall's.

Ye I saw BBD using it with 5 colour dragons, only thing is, this is far more aggressive though and with mana pressure of Mantis Rider (baby dragon) the colourless might stretch the mana base too far but its definitely worth a try, I'll take a look at your modern deck in 1 mo
