Deck Description

Mono blue BUDGET illusions for modern.

The problem with illusions, historically, is that they have a very weak supporting cast and tend to play out as a worse version of merfolk. The tempo deck for illusions consists of a mediocre 1 drop package, the mid range deck has built-in drawbacks, and the late game token version of the deck is just terrible. In most versions of the illusion tempo deck, jace’s phantasm plays out as a 1 mana 1/1 flier which is too underwhelming for the modern format. Therefore I have decided that the only way to make this deck competitive is to build it around jace’s phantasm’s second ability clause which gives the phantasm +4/+4.

THOUGHT PROCESS:
* problem 1: Illusion creatures are weak
* solution 1: by adding a bunch of cheap cantrips I can keep my creature count low as well as safely lowering the land count
* problem 2: jace’s phantasm is still a 1/1 flier
* solution 2: Add mill into our tempo deck
* problem 3: thought scour alone isn’t enough to fix problem 2
* solution 3: DIDNT SAY PLEASE! After dumping our hand early, a counter spell to maintain the current board state fits into the deck very smoothly, not to mention it has the added bonus of synergizing with our phantasm. In combination with our opponents sac lands, as well as other early spells the opponent is playing, didn’t say please serves as the perfect curve topper for our deck.

There ya have it folks.

Generally the best opening hands in this deck are the ones that contain creatures and Thought Scour, and do not have any copies of didn’t say please. The deck ideally plays out so you can dump your hand early, and then didn’t say please turns into a very very very dangerous top deck card. Overall, you probably won’t be winning tournaments with this deck, but it can definitely take your opponents by surprise and lead to some very satisfying upset victories. For a $10 dollar budget deck I don’t think you can ask for much more.

If you are interested in upgrading this deck then definitely consider adding a copy of mutavault or 2 because they can be a good mana sync for the late game as well as improving our illusion synergies. Ei: +1 mutavault, -1 didn’t say pls
