Deck Description

After a friend got me into Magic last week, I've been looking to get a standard deck going so we could play. After looking around, I decided upon a U/B control deck as it seems more my style.

So, after looking through a few sites, and disecting some U/B control/mill budget decks, I tried to make my own. Sideboard is currently cards I think could work into the deck, but I'm unsure of. Suggestions more than welcome!

Again, i'm completely new, so lay into it if you want with critiques and suggestions for the main deck, or sideboard. I'm trying to shoot for $50 (+/- $10ish)

Deck discussion for U/B Control. First build.

I love the deck for the most part.
You're honestly still short on card draw effects.
4x jace would be the best way to go but that's not easy on the pocket.(as you are a budget deck)

Anticipate would be your best bet on a budget.
I would lower the number of horribly awry as it only hits creatures, the extra draw/filter will make up for the lack of counters and keep your gas going.

Yeah, I saw Jace was a big staple in a lot of decks. Unfortunatly, one Jace is worth more than this deck currently. haha

Gottcha. Put in 4x Anticipate, and lowered Horribly awry to 2. Also, added in 1x Treasure Cruise for a draw when my graveyard gets stacked.

What I'm debating now, is balancing of the Instance/Sorc. cards to get closer to a 60Card deck. I feel I may have a few too many removals, and maybe not enough counters.

Probably not the worst idea getting down to 60.
If possible you would also want to get your lands up to 25/26

A big part of control is hitting a land almost every turn.

I gotcha. I think i'ma just get a 2-4 of each of the instant/sorceries and after playing and getting to know the deck better, knowing what cards ro sub in and out based on the opponent. Any cards you could think of that'll do well on the sideboard? Something to deal with agro decks or such.

Well is it more for kitchen table or like a cheap deck you plan on playing in standard?
Control strongly depends on your meta game, you generally want to mold it to the decks you will see the most often.

What is your friend playing?

I want it to be a cheap deck i can play in standard. Don't plan on winning a lot, just having fun and getting into the game, and learning control. And it seems besides your win and cards to enable your win con. It's a lot of control (removal/counters/ect.). So, it seems to me atm, a matter of balancing removal and counters depending on your opponent. So, vs a more creature rush deck, you'd want early removal. Vs, a rush direct dmg deck, you'd want counter spells, and so on. So, my thought was to cover the bases by getting a good sideboard going that i could use to alter the deck depending on who i'm vs. Don't plan on covering all the bases, but some more common decks. I imagi e agro decks are popular. Everyone loves a fast hard hitting strategy.

The thing about control is it's the hardest decks to play properly.
You basically need to understand every single deck in the format and exactly how they will try to beat you.
You weakest match will always be straight aggro, but if you can stabilize you can generally run their gas out.
I would honestly leave this as is until you have a better knowledge of the field once your games are over walk around and watch and see what everyone else is playing, generally FNM is pretty chill and most players are cool with teaching or helping new people.
once you know you meta a bit more I may be able to give you a few more pointers until then hard to say.
