Deck Description

I've got two versions of a modern fauna shaman deck, this being the first, the second being strictly green white ft. thalia.

This version is a lot more aggressive

It looks great now man. I have a great memory with Aven Mindcensor lol. I was playing an Extraction deck and played a huge Bitter Ordeal...and then BAM! The guy flashes in an Aven Mindcensor...

Gotta say I like the touch of Burning Tree in there. I have thoroughly gotten my ass handed to me by that dude before =P

I don't think Mindcensor completely kills a Bitterbomb, since they still shuffle afterwards, but if it didn't turn out well then you got screwed.

True, it doesn't flat out stop it, but it sure as hell makes it waaaaaaaaaay less effective.

aven mindcensor is so goood :)
mainly she's in there for the gifts/tron matchup, or even if i see another fauna shaman haha.

burning tree is so gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood, hahaha. especially vs twin (:
for twin i have a lot of answers, and i tried to keep them all different so a rune snag couldn't just blow me out completely. like i have linvala, spellskite, krosan grip, burning tree, and qasali (: also arena really helps.

Oh how I loathe shaman players like you Ethan, Mindcensor is the most obnoxious thing to see when running my Gifts list... But I will give to you that this list is a great one, however annoying it might be.

Burning Tree is something I love to see in a SB, but I will admit to preferring Spellskite.

Anywho, great shaman list

Why thank you!
This deck is actually fairly favored against gifts... assuming it's the tron version, for that's the only version i've tested against. I can just completely outrace you, run over your iona, and in the chance you choose elesh norn, hopefully i've either assembled a nice army of vines/kotrs to be able to blast past, helix for the win, or path you out (:

hawks are kind of awkward. I mean, with vengevine, they're god-like, but vengevine can get clunky. I might cut him to 2, and in that case, may totally cut hawks. For what? I'm not sure, maybe steppe lynx of goblin guide (being able to cascase into a hasty bro is very nice), but ultimately I'm still unsure.

In the main I would like some answers for storm/ascension. That's just a horrrrrible matchup. I may add the 4th thalia, just because she's that good v.s. so many decks out there. And on the topic of elesh norn (further up) I may add a 1-of phyrexian metamorph.

Also, thrun is a card I'm considering, highly, alongside loam lion/guide/steppe lynx (mainly lynx because the kotr interactions/fetches galore are really attractive).

Also, with a landbase tweak magus of the moon might be a valid option.
This deck can just go balls deep, lol.

Opinions?

I run Sphinx of the Steel Wind in my Gifts list right now >:D I had originally been running it more like my Slaver list, but I laid it out to be more immediately controlling, so I dropped a good bit of the creature bombs out.

Vengevine is mostly something I've avoided playing outside of that Jericho deck, so I dunno. I hadn't even bothered with playing Survival when it was around.
So I'd probably free up some slots by dropping them, and going down to three hawks.

I don't think the fourth Thalia worth it, I'd probably just run the Metamorph. You've got to pick your battles, and if storm is that popular where you play, I'd probably run a different deck :/

I like the idea of running Magus, but I don't think it's a move I'd make personally.

ou... sphinx is tech o.o

i love vengevine. it's just too good with shaman, and also in this deck, bloodbraid pretttty well guarantees a vengevine recursion.
hawk is, imo, a 4 of or none of :/

thalia isn't solely for storm, she's jst all around good. like vs twin, rdw (kinda), any control deck, and she just doens't hold me back at all. she's really good (:

WnB knows wassup! 3 Hawks errday!

Does it really make sense to run more than three, when your running Fauna as the tutor, instead of Hawks? Follow?

not exactly... it's because I'm running fauna that I feel 4 is what's up.
I play 1 hawk, I now have 3 in hand. Which, if I'm not running vines, means 3 reasonable pitches for tutoring purposes. Even with vine, 4 is definitely where it's at, seeing how he depends on creatures.

I feel it makes perfect sense.

Yeah, I can see Vengevine being balling when fuelled by Bloodbraid, but I'm still not a believer on that one.
Hawks I can understand your stance on though. I think I'd rather run Squee than them to tell the truth, since I'd mostly just use them for Fauna fodder.

Thalia is good in a lot of matches I know, but I just don't think it's worth running four. I'm more or less all or nothing when it comes to sphere effects.

Nice, man. I ran something like this (Jund-colored) back in Lorwyn-Alara, and then I replaced Demigods with Vengevines when Alara-Zendikar was standard, making it Naya.
It might just be my meta, but I'd add either Jotun Grunts or more Bogs to the sideboard. And Krosan Grip is always useful, so I'd up that too.
I never ran Squadron Hawk in any decks, but that is beautiful card advantage, especially with Ms. Fauna. Nice choice.
My advice for mainboard would probably be this: don't be afraid to use the shaman as a toolbox. You already have Pridemages, crusaders, finks, mindcensors; considering how low you are on creature removal, throwing one Fiend Hunter or Mangara of Corondor in here wouldn't be bad, and wouldn't mess with your 30-creature strategy either.

Nice build. I might try it out myself. :)

You don't have to tell me about tool boxes! :P I'm a toolbox fanatic, but all the same, modern is very different from the standard I was used to.
I would very much so like to build my deck around fauna shaman, but the thing is, she dies to a LOT of things in the format, and is sometimes just too slow to really be of any good.
She's in there because she's a HUGE threat, all the same, and she couples nicely with all the other huge threats in the deck. (: I would make this more tool-box-e, but i'd rather make it so that it can function as both toolbox, and a reliable deck without the shaman.

I took out mindcensor, because the matches he was good in, were already ones I pretty much won. I replaced him with thrun because I always found myself wanting one, but I may replace thrun with a fiend hunter, or mangara (i love that suggestion, thank you very much!!)

I changed the board, however, to fit my meta. I pretty much lose to storm, so I added the leylines, and rdw is a cheap deck that can hose my ass. So I prepaired accordingly. Also upped the baloth count for the aggro loam match up.
twin is actually a match up I'm favored in, believe it or not. I smack down a thalia, they're hurting. And also the pridemages are reallllly good against it. And out of the sb I bring in another pridemage, coupled with linvala and spellskite, and we're cooking (:

I'm glad you like the deck!

AND OH, the bog thing, yes I wanted more bogs board, but that's why I added a vesuva to the main :'D it's essentially having 2 bogs and 2 steppes (:

I like your thinking, man.

I guess i was being a little gimmicky in my suggestions. :) And taking another look at your board, with your meta in mind, I guess you're fine.

I wasn't really considering the fact that Shaman is susceptible to removal. :/ All removal in modern, pretty much, besides... Death Rattle and Soul Reap? :)

As good as KotR is, I think you might do better with more aggressive creatures like Gobbo Guide or other Zendikar beatsticks (Lynx, Red-landfall-insect-iforgetthename). As big as she can get, the goblin will give you damage faster. I would make the list more zoo-like, but that's never a problem!

If you're still going for a slightly midrange aggro with a toolbox attached, I still strongly suggest adding mangara to at least the sb. And as much as I hate to say it, Goyf would be good here. I never pass up a two mana 3/4.

By the way, I've been trying out a modified list of your WB Taxes list in Legacy. It's very good against Aggro and Combo, but is pretty weak vs control. I like it though.
