Deck Description

I'm new to deck building, this is my first real one. Started getting back into Magic when the Return to Ravnica block was released, tried three of the guild intro decks, and I fell in love with Selesnya.

Gatecreeper Vine for mana draw. Axebane Guardian for mana pool. Both of these together will give me access to huge amounts of mana... maybe too much. Grove of the Guardian is not in here for the sake of mana pool but for the 8/8 creature token. Thus leaving me 6 Forest, 6 Plains, 3 Temple Gardens, and 4 Evolving Wilds for my mana pool. This may be too much mana, I've not had the chance to test it much yet. However, my goal is to have a lot of land quickly to create more tokens more quickly.

On the low end Selesnya Charm and Call of the Conclave for quick 2/2 and 3/3 creature tokens. Centaur's Herald for the added 3/3 creature tokens, though I have my doubts about it's usefulness with the smaller creature tokens coming into the game. On the mid end the Vitu-Ghazi for her 3/3, and can come in early for a 3/3 creature token within 4 rounds, or a little later when there is a larger mana pool for all at once.On the high end Armada Wurm for a 5/5 Wurm and a 5/5 creature token. Slime Molding can become even bigger with the above mana pool as described - 10/10 plus anyone? The Grove of the Guardian is also in the deck for an 8/8 creature token. The beast of the pack, the Wayfaring Temple, is an ever growing bastard - I close my eyes and imagine a 20/20 with all those Growing Ranks.

Druid's Deliverance for a populate with the added protection it offers. Rootborn Defenses for the quick populate. 4 Growing Ranks may be too many, well, likely is too many - but the idea is to double and triple my tokens at every upkeep.

This is my first deck with the cards I have available right now, there is obviously room for improvement and I have a wish list put together. I'll tweak it based on that wish list and you comments. Below are some of my current plans for this deck:

The Loxodon Smiter almost seems useless to me, with it's discard-proof-ness, as my creature tokens can, will, do the same thing with Growing Ranks. Thoughts? I would like more Armada Wurm's and Trostani, Voice of the Selsnya. The many Grove of the Guardian and Growing Rank cards could be removed to make space, as could the Centaur's Herald which would go first. Intangible Virtue and/or Collective Blessing would be a no-brainer. Gavony Township, as well as Sunpetal Grove, and one more Temple Gaden could replace a couple of my basic lands if the Axebane Guardian and other defenders prove effective. Worldspine Wurm would coexist with Armada Wurm nicely. Death's Presence would be a good sideboard perhaps. Parallel Lives could replace most of the Growing Ranks. Entreat the Angels would be a high end token with all the mana pool potentially available.

I'm still working it all out, including a good sideboard, but words of advice and such are appreciated.

seems a good start to a deck.... resto angels would be great to bounce your centuar healer and perhaps another wurm.... g/w is really beast now.... i made a g/w aggro if you wanna take a peek.... and if you can get your hands on parrellel ( spell check ) lives.... makes your tokens come into play double... would work rather nicely.... if you wanna take a peek at my g/w aggro i will post a link..... heck even the trostani lady would be great in here... so many choices and so little room in a deck LOL

My suggestion is to pitch the Evolving Wilds for Sunpetal Groves. That will help you from losing a turn's worth of mana. Also, I highly suggest at least another 3 mana, possibly in place of the Centaur's Herald, or some of the Grove of the Guardians. In that, I do suggest throwing in 3 more forests than anything, since you have a time and a half as many green mana symbols in the deck as white one.

Thanks a bunch for the comment. I play tested it and noticed some lack of mana - though I found it fast to bring out an Axebane Guardian and Gatecreeper Vine which was an incredible boost regardless of the available basic lands. I know there are several cards in here not necessary or worthwhile having, but the current build was made from what I had. I traded for a Trostani and will definitely be on the lookout for some Sunpetal Groves and other non-basic lands.

Lox Smiter is a great card to sideboard in this type of deck, because if you run up against heavy control or discard type decks, it gives you an answer. For the main deck, I believe that Precinct Captain is a much better main deck choice. He fits with the theme So much better.

4 Grove of the Guardians is too much. You really should not have more than 1 in this deck. You are going to find that popping it for the 8/8 elemental will not happen often and you are shorting yourself with much needed mana, by having so many in there. I would ditch 3 of the Groves and 2 of the Wilds and replace them with 1 Temple Garden, 3 Sunpetal Groves, and 1 Rogue's Passage. Rogue's Passage will help you populate, when you make the Wayfaring Temple and/or the Precinct Captain "Unblockable"

You are better off removing the Centaur's Heralds for either Arbor Elves or Avacyn's Pilgrim. The Heralds are too mana intensive for what they offer, IMHO. And I'm of the same opinion when it comes to the Guildmage.

If you are willing to tap a creature for mana, replace the Axbane Guardians with Somberwald Sages. I generally prefer creatures who's abilities are triggered when they come in to play as opposed to when something occurs during gameplay. I think the Attended Knights are great options for this deck, especially if you get Parallel Lives.

Lastly, you may find that having 4 Selesnya's Charms and 2 Rootborn Defenses is better. The Charms have more uses and give your deck much-needed flexibility.

I've made a new deck based on your comments, some trading I've done, and on finding a fit with my play style. Please visit http://www.mtgvault.com/ViewDeck.aspx?DeckID=395590
