Deck Description

The battle of wits has begun!

How to Play

So, a few ways to win here. Each one involves impossible to accomplish combos that likely won't happen until long after you have lost. But, this is Commander, so there is always a chance.

Most fun/unlikely path to victory: Battle of Wits!

The politicking will start before the game even begins. Pursuing this path to victory will rely on the flexibility of your playgroup. With purely casual groups, you can pull this off by dumping 200 copies of Battle of Wits into your library.

If your group is a little more picky, you'll have to pull a ridiculous amount of basic land (the only card you can have more than one copy of) from outside the game into your library.

If they play purely by tournament rules, this whole deck isn't viable. Not only because it sucks, but because you can only pull cards from your sideboard, which will be limited to 15 cards.

We'll run down the first two scenarios.

1. Super Casual.

In order to yank 200 copies of Battle of wits into your library, you need to cast the research side of Research/Development 50 times. The first way to do this is with your Commander. Riku copies an instant or sorcery for a blue and a red. One hundred mana with half being red and half being blue ought to do the trick. There are a couple methods.

The easy way is to have have Training Grounds, Filigree Sages and Khalni Gem on the battlefield. Tap the gem for 2 blue and give 1 to the Sages to untap the gem. Do this 52 times. Then, with your 50 of your floating blue mana, you can snatch the 50 green, 49 blue and 1 green you need to cast Research 50 times. With some to spare.

Method two is to make many, many copies of Axebane Guardian. Soul Foundry, Intruder Alarm and the Guardian will take care of that. After the first 3 copies of Abane Guardian come out, they will start paying for themselves. Then, you are blessed with infinite mana in any combination of colors to copy research as many times as necessary. With 201 copies of Battle of Wits in your library, you are sure to draw and cast one to win.

Mana method number three is Griffin Canyon (altered by Artificial Evolution) enchanted with Dawn Reflection/Market Festival and Magus of the Candelabra. Artificially evolve the canyon to untap wizards and then tap the enchanted Canyon for a colorless along with a blue and a red. Give the colorless to Magus to untap the Canyon. Tap the Canyon to untap the Magus. Give one of your floating mana to the Magus to untap the Canyon. After all of that, you net one mana of any color. Repeat until you have 1 green, 49 red and 50 blue mana floating. Now you can cast Research and copy it 49 times to grab your 200 Battle of Wits!

This process can be similarly repeated with Krosan Restorer and Wirewood Lodge (with Artificial Evolution) enchanted with the Reflection/Market.

Still more! Enchant a land with Squirrel Nest, make said land a creature with Verdant Touch and then cast Intruder Alarm. Every Squirrel untaps your new creature land! You could attack with your infinite Squirrels, but how original is that? Why not sacrifice them to your various altars? Altar of Dimentia can mill all of your opponents. Ashnod’s Altar can give you infinite colorless mana. Let your altar and squirrel fire up a Lotus Petal/Salvaging Station combo that will give you infinite mana of any color to to copy your Research for Battle of Wits.

So, what happens when Riku is inevitably killed over and over again before you can do any of this? Enter Isochron Scepter. Imprint Research on the Scepter, then use the Filigree sages and any of your infinite mana combos to repeatedly use and untap the scepter.

One of your infinite mana combos along with an Intruder alarm and an infinite creature combo will allow Aphetto Alchemist to repeatedly untap the Scepter as well.

That concludes the “Super Casual” Battle of Wits of methods. What if your opponents nix the whole “200 Copies of the same card in my sideboard” idea? Land. Basic land is the only card (in this color combo) that you can have as many copies of as you like in your deck. So, you will want to pull 200 basic lands into your library. You won’t be hurting for mana…

Basically you will be using all the same methods as above. The problem comes with finding Battle of Wits. Enter the Infinite will find it. Just cast BoW and Elixir of Immortality and then discard down to seven cards. Pop the Elixir and put your many-hundreds card graveyard into your library.

Manamorphose and Riku will draw your whole deck as well. Repeat above.

Another couple methods are Abundance, Erratic Explosion, Explosive Relevation and Kaboom! Go through all that land to reveal a nonland card – Hopefully Battle of Wits. The latter three have the added bonus of dealing out potentially massive damage.

Oher ways to win:

Attack with an infinite scurry of squirrels (see above).

Mill with Altar of Dimentia (see above).

Mill with Doorkeeper (see infinite Axebane Guardian combo above).

Treasure Hunt and Seismic Assault. Land shouldn’t be hard to come by if you have grabbed 200 of them.

Choose any method with infinite turns (Final Fortune, Isochron Scepter, Sundial of the Infinite).

You’ll need defense. Imprint one of your defenders on Soul Foundry and pump them out. Fog Bank and Guard Gomazoa are especially effective. All creatures gain their properties with Statecraft.

This this deck comes about as highly recommended as starting a land war in Asia.
