Deck Description

An artifact deck... in the Khans block?

I think this deck is approaching its final state. It's performed very well so far, and I've trimmed down the excessive mana ramp by swapping Whisperer for Sagu Mauler. Although Mauler doesn't fit the artifact theme exactly, it's a terrific beater in the decks colors, plus benefits from Ghostfire Blade's cheap equip while it's morphed. I dropped a couple Pilgrims for Bidents of Thassa which function as the deck's draw engine, and is also fair game for Ensoul Artifact. Although Pilgrim can be ramped into, it ends up being dead weight far too often to warrant 4 slots. I have yet to playtest this last modification.

I'm now turning my focus towards the sideboard (although mainboard advice is still welcome), and any suggestions would be appreciated.

How to Play

The muscle of this deck is Hewed Stone Retainers. A 4/4 for 3 is pretty sweet, and mana dorks and 0-drop artifacts like Ornithopter and Briber's purse (which can be payed for later in the game for a handy bit of board control) ensure that you're able to cast it turn 2 or 3. Ghostfire Blade is ridiculously effective with Retainers, allowing for an easy 6 damage on turn 4 even without mana ramp from Renowned Weaponsmith. Now as you can guess, I'm only running Weaponsmith for it's first ability, which is great enough on its own in a deck that takes advantage of it. Ensoul Artifact is handy for turning those otherwise useless 0 drop artifacts into serious threats.

I like the idea, however I would suggest some card draw engine.

Hmm, duly noted. From playtesting I could see how that would come in handy. I'll see how I might be able to squeeze it in. Any suggestions?

Not sure in standard. Bident of Thassa maybe? Just a blind shot, you would have to test that....

Dig through time, treasure cruise, Jace's ingenuity, etc. Stubborn denial and darksteel citadel would be good additions for the deck.

treasure yes stubborn is a must have with ensoul and dark citadels but dig not so much if you need a drawing ability try abzan beastmaster combine with Meandering Towershell/Kruphix, God of Horizons/Pheres-Band Centaurs/wall of frost/Dragon's Eye Savants/Sagu Mauler/Swarmborn Giant/Archers' Parapet/Monastery Flock/Coastline Chimera/Thassa, God of the Sea/Courser of Kruphi or a Illusory Angel boom drawing is easy

Stubborn denial is definitely finding a place here, at least in the sideboard. The build is kind of tight, but I'll find so,e way to squeeze in a draw engine. Treasure cruise is a possibility, but I don't know if I'll have the graveyard to make it's delve consistent. Ideally the draw engine would be an artifact so it can be ensouled and payed for by weaponsmith. Thanks for the suggestions so far, everyone!

I still say wall of frost with abzan beastmaster

Beastmaster would still be an effective draw engine even without the wall. The question is, how can I fit it (or another draw engine) in the deck and is it worth it. I'm going to have to playtest more with this version once the rest comes in the mail.

A case could be made for scuttling doom engine over pilgrim.

Could put a darksteel citadel or two in the deck. It's a good target for ensoul.

Throw in chief engineer, scuttling doom engine , and Darksteel citadel and you have yourself a deck

I've playtested extensively (bringing the deck in it's various incarnations to competitions) and I've found that chief engineer just isn't viable. It definitely looks good on paper, but most creatures that I could tap for convoke would be mana dorks anyway. Doom Engine and Citadel are both cards I'm seeking out and I'll put them in as I get my hands on them. I feel secure enough with the deck right now that I'm not going to go and order them this minute but I do plan on fitting them in someday.

That's fair. I ran UR ENSOUL for a few months, even going 5-0 at khans gameday. Chief, doom engine, and shrapnel blast did help

Sweet! It's such an underrated archetype (as far as I know no one else has gone for this particular type of built yet). I can't wait to take this version down to the local store this Friday.

I know im glad others are trying it out. one cool option with green if you do get a scuttling doom engine is life's legacy

You could replace a few of those islands with Radiant Fountains or Tomb of the Spirit Dragon.

Silumgar Sorcerer seems really good in this deck. It can basically function as an instant counter spell, or you can combo it with Doom for a nice slap in their face.

It would be a good counterspell but it's for 2 and it does the same thing as stubborn denial and it's only one mana plus once you ensoul a artifact now it becomes a better counter then Silumgar scorn

Wrong card. Sorcerer is a creature with flash, cmc3. Exploit-counter target creature spell.

Wow I'm a retardant I was thing about scorn then yes it would be a good card to add the mix but if anything dissolve dissipate now if all so added the the 2 mana mindreaver with dance of the skywise plus a couple disdainful strokes if not add a couple hour of need, icy blast, negates, nullify, neutral blast, and a thassa's rebuff
