I was talking to a friend about Splinter Twin being banned in Modern and how Midnight Guard + Presence of Gond is a possible equivalent, when he pointed out that Twin was good because of the control elements it had. After a number of ideas where thrown around, my friend suggested injecting the combo into Hatebears. This is an attempt at doing so with cards I actually own.
Vryn Wingmare and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben slow down any noncreature spells the opponent casts. Dryad Militant exiled instants and Sorceries, slowing down any flashback and Delve effects. A large number of Modern decks use fetch lands. Aven Mindcensor can stop that fetch and effectively set the player back one turn. Ghost Quarter works well with this too. Now for the combo pieces. The most obvious combo is Midnight Guard enchanted with Presence of Gond to make a nigh infinite Elf Tokens. The second, yet somewhat more reliable combo, it Sprout Swarm. Both Midnight Guard and Nettle Sentinel untap when you cast Sprout Swarm, so they are key to producing multiple Saprolings a turn. For those worried about Dryad Militant stopping Sprout Swarm, don't. The Dryad only exiles what hits the graveyard, and with Sprout's Buyback, it never hits the graveyard. Similarly, Wingmare and Thalia aren't much of a problem, you just need to tap that many more creatures for Sprout's convoke.
