Deck discussion for Taxes, Tokens, and Death(EDH)

What was the purpose of the commander choice other than the Mardu color scheme? Do you benefit from being the monarch in any way? Otherwise you are just paying 4 mana for a 3/3 DT haste which seems kind of bland.

Being the monarch gives you a draw at the end of your turn. Anyone who deals combat damage to the monarch becomes the monarch. There's a token that explains this. This gives the game something fun to fight over other than just killing each other. Also after playing a lot of commander I find that when building a deck your commander should be more of a bonus not your win condition.

Awesome, thank you! I have never seen the monarch mechanic and that makes a lot more sense!
