Deck Description

--- I. Overview ---

This deck is my most competitive deck and so much fun to play!

The deck is built around the commander (Mikaeus, The Unhallowed).

The main plan is to get:
Mikaeus + Sacrifice Outlet + Creature which can remove its +1/+1 counters

However, there are some other fun combos that do not involve Mikaeus as well.

This deck can be very powerful since you can have a really insane turn--killing all your opponents seemingly out of the blue. But, like all combo decks it can fold to control or any sort of disruption. Since it is a mono-black deck, it has issues with non-creature removal as well.

Usually, I take one of two approaches:

1. Try to look as unthreatening as possible as I build up my hand. Maybe I play some controlly black creatures to make my opponents think I'm just put a bunch of cool black cards together. Then, once I have my hand sculpted the way I want, go off.

Of course, this is more difficult to do if people know how my deck works and wins. ;)

2. Carefully--very carefully--try to go off when I can. Or, don't put all my eggs into one basket. Wait until everyone who can disrupt me is tapped out. Or, wait until the board is in an amiable state for my combo. Or even wait until I have enough options in my hand and on my board such that when I do try to combo off and fail due to disruption, I'm still in the game.

So, let's get into the specifics...

--- II. Sac Outlets ---

1. Altar of Dementia
2. Ashnod's Altar
3. Blasting Station
4. Phyrexian Altar
5. Skullclamp (for creatures with 1 Toughness)
6. Dimir House Guard
7. Disciple of Griselbrand
8. Flesh-Eater Imp
9. Hell's Caretaker
10. Phyrexian Plaguelord
11. Thoughtpicker Witch
12. Viscera Seer
13. Attrition
14. Victimize

--- III. Sac Targets ---

Targets that, with Mikaeus, can remove their +1/+1 counters after being sacrificed to be ready to sacrifice again!

1. Carnifex Demon
2. Grim Poppet
3. Hex Parasite
4. Lingering Tormentor
5. Pith Driller
6. Puppeteer Clique
7. Skinrender
8. Spincrusher
9. Tatterkite
10. Triskelion
11. Wingrattle Scarecrow (requires another black creature to be in play)
12. Workhorse

--- IV. Indirect Sac Abilities ---

Since we do a lot of sacrificing in this deck, some cards are included to give that extra kick each time you sacrifice a creature.

1. Genesis Chamber
This is a good card to hide behind if you are on the "Don't pay attention to me!" plan since it's deceptively group huggy.

2. Pawn of Ulamog
(1) mana each time I sacrifice a creature? Yes, please!

3. Black Market
(B) mana each time I sacrifice a creature for each turn? Um, yeah! You also get this benefit if one of your opponent's creatures dies. This card is broken after a large board wipe.

4. Grave Pact
A classic. This thing is amazing to get rid of the especially tricky creatures to remove (such as Eldrazi, Progentius, etc.).

--- V. Mana Ramp ---

1. Ashnod's Altar
2. Caged Sun
3. Expedition Map
4. Extraplanar Lens
5. Gauntlet of Power
6. Phyrexian Altar
7. Crypt Ghast (+extort, awesome!)
8. Pawn of Ulamog
9. Pilgrim's Eye
10. Solemn Simulacrum
11. Workhorse
12. Black Market

--- VI. Card Draw & Tutors ---

1. Bloodgift Demon
2. Dimir House Guard
3. Netherborn Phalanx
4. Rune-Scarred Demon
5. Solemn Simulacrum
6. Viscera Seer
7. Phyrexian Arena
8. Liliana Vess
9. Beseech the Queen
10. Demonic Tutor
11. Diabolic Tutor
12. Skullclamp

--- VII. Graveyard Recursion ---

1. Nim Deathmantle (creature)
2. Skeleton Shard (artifact creature)
3. Hell's Caretaker (creature)
4. Beacon of Unrest (creature or artifact)
5. Profane Command (creature)
6. Victimize (creature)

--- VIII. Util Cards ---

1. Lightning Greaves
Mikaeus or main combo tool protection. Also adds haste for free.

2. Nevinyrral's Disk
Sometimes you just need to blow up the world.

3. Spine of Ish Sah
Due to our awesome ramp and potential infinite mana combos, this guy is really easy to cast. Spot permanent removal that potentially recurs is always useful.

4. Whispersilk Cloak
Mikaeus or main combo tool protection. Also makes big dudes unblockable for those rare cases when we want to attack.

5. Dread
Wonderful protection tool. People really avoid attacking you with him on the board. Also, he helps protect against opponents milling you (or you milling yourself when trying to combo off).

6. Grave Titan
Making sacrifice fodder is always useful. Also, he allows the creation of an infinite zombie army with Nim's Deathmantle and Ashnod's Altar out.

7. Black Sun's Zenith
A board wipe that can get rid of indestructible dudes--take that Avacyn!

8. Decree of Pain
Board wipe + card advantage? Awesome!

9. Exsanguinate
A win condition. Make infinite mana with one of our mana combos and drain your opponents out!

10. Life's Finale
Another board wipe. We can also search for Eldrazi or shuffle-into-library critters to make sure we can mill our opponents out.

11. Profane Command
I listed this as a Graveyard Recursion Card (and that's usually what I use it for), but it can also be used as a kill condition (drain life) or to make your army of infinite zombies/myrs potentially unblockable or even to kill an annoying indestructible creature.

Deck discussion for Mikaeus, the Unhallowed EDH

alright, look to the sworn to darkness deck for some really good ideas. ghoulcaller gisa is a beautiful card to be partnered with grave pact as well as endless ranks of the dead. Every EDH zombie deck should have heartless summoning. Grave Betrayal and Call to the Grave are also beautiful but not needed. An all black zombie deck NEEDS gray merchant of asphodel as well as read the bones for scry and card draw. Some zombie poopers you'll need are also liliana's reaver and overseer of the damned. More sacrifice power would be butcher of talakir. Idk WHY you don't have tragic slip. I personally LOVE hero's downfall in an all black deck but that's just personal preference. More great demons would be xathrid demon (at first he seems shitty but trust me hes a god) reaper from the abyss <3 nd desecration demon. Pack rat is wonderful in any sac deck as well. There should never be an EDH deck without a sol ring. That's a rule. Dread slaver is nice for zombie support and ob nixilis of the black oath needs to be in here. (but once again thats my personal preference.)
