Deck Description

Is EDH too expensive for you? Wanna play a fun deck that doesn't cost a fortune? Then allow me to introduce you to....Poor Man's EDH. For under $75 you can own a cool, powerful, and fun EDH deck that isn't too limited. Thromok has always been someone I wanted to use in commander for multiple reasons. First of all, he looks absolutely outstanding. Second, I love Devour decks! and third, Gruul EDH poses a bit of a challenge when deckbuilding! So, Thromok and me might be a match made in heaven (or hell depending on who you ask) or it could be just coincidence that I had to make his Poor Man's EDH deck! Either way, enjoy!

(Slight Update) Traded a Mountain for Rootbound Crag due to mana issues.

How to Play

Across the multiverse, legend has it of a creature of size and power beyond imagination. In the smoke filled skies near a volcano rests a mighty monster whose hunger has lead it to it's namesake as Insatiable, consuming more cities, great beasts, and infamous figures of history that tried to slay it. You have traveled to it's lair in an attempt to have it lead your pack of nature's greatest in a war across the planes against civilization....and you have succeeded. Now, you ride on Thromok's back into battle with your tribe behind and in front of you, ready to smash anything in your way to pieces! Thromok is a mighty hellion that eats others to fuel it's hunger and power, with Devour X, an ability exclusive to Thromok. (or so we know at least) Devour means that when the creature comes into play, you sacrifice creatures to give the creature coming out +1/+1 counter equal to the sacrifice made. Thromok has a special kind of Devour however, which grows the more he eats! So, if he eats 3 creatures, he comes out as a 9/9! This gives Thromok a huge advantage over most other commanders, allowing him to easily one-shot opponents with commander damage, as well as a size advantage on board to any other creature, even the mighty Korlash, whom has faced Thromok before he died and barely lived to tell the tale. (some say it was the injuries from that battle that caused Korlash to seek unlife in the first place!) And Thromok isn't the only devour creature in your tribe, there a a few more that get to feast up and demolish the contest!

In order to fuel this devour ability, however, you need the right creatures, and a large number of them. Thankfully, you have more than enough ways to get lots of creatures out to feed to Thromok and fellow hungry titans. Cards like Civic Wayfinder and Flametongue Kavu enter the battlefield and do something effective with nothing else afterward except a body, which makes them perfect candidates, while other creatures require death to use their abilities, like Goblin Arsonist and Tukatongue Thallid. But these only bring appetizers to the mix, to feed Thromok, you will need many, and many you can have! Cards like Awakening Zone and Beetleback Chief produce several tokens at once, perfect for feeding Thromok for little cost. One of your most efficient ways to produce tokens is to call out Krenko, Mob Boss. He's a goblin that taps to put out more goblins for the number of goblins you have, giving you a gradual gathering of tons of goblins, great for feeding the devourers! Also, if you can't seem to call one of the devour monsters, just bring out Ogre Battledriver for a powerful combo with Krenko's goblin spawning!

Thromok is a powerful hellion, and your tribe will naturally follow his standards, and with these standards comes a few good and bad things. Due to a lack of White, Black, or Blue mana, you aren't allowed access removal and counter spells. To make up for this, you get powerful damage spells and plenty of artifact and enchantment destruction, which is perfect for EDH! Destructive Revelry and Hull Breach are prime examples of this, eliminating both an artifact and enchantment in one spell, and Flame Slash is an awesome damage spell, dealing 4 damage to a creature for only one red mana! Another plus for the barbaric Red and Green mages is that you get plenty of mana-ramping! Cards like the previously stated civic Wayfinder and the sorcery Kodama's Reach get lands you need to help keep your tribe stomping and shouting in the battle, which can really speed you up early game! So maybe you don't have the stealth of the Dimir or the wits of the Azorius (who are all a bunch of sissies if I might add) but Thromok and your tribe have raw power and nature's strongest creatures at your side, which is all you need to seize the day in the end!
