Card discussion for Necropolis Fiend

Does X equal the absolute amount of the cards exiled from the graveyard and is paid by that entirely or is it : Tap X Mana + Excile X? Because all the time i thought of it as just exiling, but it now came to mind, that there actually is no delving involved in the ability cost part, only in the result of the effect. So if i were to pay 5 and i exiled 5 = 5dmg to creature, but can this also apply with just exiling the cards?
