Card discussion for Judge's Familiar

Why is it that curse catcher is so much more valuable than judge's familiar, when the familiar seems to me to be a far superior card? Same mana cost, except familiar can be played with blue or white, and same ability. What an I missing? Is the creature type really the reason? Just because it is a merfolk?

Yep.
Merfolks are extremely competitive in both modern and older formats. Judge's Familiar, while being a great card in some decks, is not so heavily demanded.
