Deck discussion for Molten Vortex!!!

Oh dear... Just saw this sort of deck featured (and I though it was a joke at first) on Loading Ready Run's recent 'Friday Nights' (long road). I want to put this together just once. Just once. XD

I put it together and won every game except for one, because somebody casted Abzan Advantage and I didn't draw another Vortex.

reminds me of zombie hunt deck. Rellies on having days undoing and molten vortex in your hand.

I really like the idea, but it's easy to beat with the proper tools (e.g. enchantment removal after sideboard, or just a wellplaced counterspell), even in standard. I feel like the deck can use some more finetuning and/or a bit more cards, perhaps including a second win-condition.

Anticipate to find combo pieces, dig through time to find cards, maybe even a few counterspells to blow up your opponent

Same with the Zombie Treasure Hunt deck. I own it in paper because it was too fun not to. If the combo is countered at all, or you mulligan down to 1 without grabbing a TH, you lose. Otherwise it's pretty fun. Same can be said for this deck. It looks pretty cool and fun but I can see it failing from the same issues. I agree with simicmartin35, these 2 up against each other would be fun to watch.

The beauty in this deck is it's simplicity. Still, I couldn't help making a few additions.

maybe try shivan reef, swiftwater cliffs, radiant fountain.

I feel that this deck relies too much on the next draw, compared to its Modern parent decks. To counter this, you should have some more draw spells in here like divination or Artifacter's Epiphany.

How much can you water the combo in this before it stops working? By adding cards that's how. I'd play swipe control over this.

Too bad you're trying to stick to budget, cause Treasure Hunt would be perfect for this deck!!!

Not standard legal, and not really a budget issue with that card...

Treasure Hunt is also something like $2 I think......
Budget? Yes.
Standard? HELL NO! It is from Zendikar after all

why? why would they go back to Zendikar? only the most OP block in MTg history. not sure if I like this. allies, eldrazi, and landfall. :(

Well, it just became even more OP :D

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I started playing MTG in that accursed block, and the OP decks haunt my dreams still... allies= OP, Eldrazi (done right)=OP, landfall... can be really good but is way too inconsistent... BUT IS STILL OP!!!!!!!!!

I made a ally mill deck once. white and blue... it was standard legal and could mill out 3 people all at once while having tough enough defenses that none of those 3 could hurt it!!!!! oh, and that is before a friend added a Mindsculptor to it.

om paper it doesn't look like much, but man... it is a nightmare to play against. if I had been playing FNM with it, I am sure it would have done very well.

....I was almost convicted, then you said it could have done well at standard. Lol. Look up the korblade deck. That deck was disgusting. That deck plus limited just becoming a race to the first eldrazi... Zendicar sucked for people just starting who were not good at trading/ had little money.

...... and still does

yeah... eldrazi... stupid expensive. and Necrumlsice, I never did play FNM when it zendikar block was standard. and Kor-blade does look pretty good. but I don't know. I would be interested in seeing how my mill deck did against it.

here is what I recall the deck being somewhat like.
http://www.mtgvault.com/kazzong/decks/allies-of-hatred/

it isn't an exact replica, but fairly close.

it is scary fast too. pretty sure you can mill most of a deck by turn 3 pretty consistently.

My friend you have the soul of a true warrior to look at that deck and wish to do battle. Yours does look pretty sweet tho.

what can I say? I love to play the game even when it appears that the odds are against me. and I think that my ally mill can hold it's own against most anything.

one of my favorite things to do is just to go to FNM trick someone into friendly mulligans and keep drawing until I get a perfect hand.

My record drawing time is about 9:00 minutes

You still need card draw in this deck. The modern equivelant has Treasure Hunt for hand size and it's just straight discard!
Relying on a top-deck is not a good deck strat

Got to say not quite sure how to take this deck. It scare's me to be honest. Manly because so many things could go wrong if you don't get it firing right off the bat. But then my mind say's, "man, if this is gonna piss someone off," and i like that. Good deck, but definitly agree with s0rinmark0v needs some draw.

I would run Anticipates rather than the Divinations, I know you could get more gas with the draw two but anticipate practically guarantees gas at instant speed with less mana to cast. Also Sphinx's Tutelage with all this draw going on wouldn't be a bad idea.
I'll post this in the comments on your deck as well.

I might have a few suggestions. I think that it definitely needs more drawing, perhaps a howling mine or some burning inquiry? You don't have to discard three cards if you have no cards in your hand. Ior Ruin Expedition, Ancestral Vision, Magmatic Insight, Preordain or Serum Visions might also be some good additions. Countryside Crusher could be really cool in this deck too.

Good suggestions, that could turn this into a Modern monster, if I'm to stick to standard this simple build works well.

If you're going modern, just use Seismic Assault and Treasure Hunt.....
That's all you need. I have a variation on this deck with lots of draw

Why not use magmatic insight and or tormenting voice to keep this mono red. If days undoing is that good you could easily play some shivan reefs and or islands to make it useable. I just feel like day's undoing alone is not enough.

With all the new utility lands id say play some reefs, Id also say play all the fetches you can and play cruse to fill up the grave as fast as you can. I don't think the thinning will affect you that much.

I concur with the Magmatic Insight. It would be a good addition/ possible replacement if you wanted to make it mono red.

Alchemist's Vial could be helpful to protect you against creatures while you get everything in place, it would also be great in conjunction with Humble Defector. Or perhaps a Humble Defector and Refocus, four tap for 5 cards, boom. Fascination could also be helpful if you're pumping out land like I imagine this deck would.

0

how this deck works. is it just the vortex spinning for 2 damage 10 times?

0

Yes, but since standard is a pretty slow format you try to control the board in the early game grinding out value from MV. Eventually casting Day's Undoing will draw a new hand to giving you the resources to deal 20 dmg.

I haven't played this deck but it looks like it will be fine going down to 3 or 4 cards as long as you have at least 1 non-land card. I wouldn't keep a hand with only DU unless I had 4 or less cards.
