Deck discussion for ANTI-JUND

i see youve made the deck!! : ). looks solid. i wouldn't run 4 of each planeswalker though considering you can only have one out of the same type at a time. the outlander is great. o crap, you reminded me of meddling mage!!!!! i own one of those!!!!! and the lightcaster my friends own. thanks for the reminders!!! i would have run ajani and elspeth in mine and the sphinx and all those fetch lands but i dont own them and i cant afford them : (. looks good though. i give plus 1 also because this helped me out in my search for cheap cards that will get the job done. : )

This would definitely be a good deck if it was going against a creature filled jund deck, but the best jund deck I have seen only had 4 Bloodbraid elves and the rest was burn and control. The prot red is good though cause it blocks terminate, and bolt. But he can still be hit by earthquake, wretched banquet, doom blade, infest, volcanic fallout, hideous end and pyroclasm. And since he's an artifact I guess a jund deck can naturalize him to.

Putrid Leech or Malestorm Pulse > Vadalken Outlander
Blightning will still rock your deck really hard
Jund still has more card advantage than you because of casade

You made Terminate useless, Bitminous Blast almost useless (they can still do it to their own creature for casade effect).

Meh... it seems slightly better as you have better spells but Jund has Card Advantage. I'm not too certain which will win, have you tested this deck out against a typical Jund deck? (There's a deck list at MTG.com of a typical Jund deck)

@ Bon_Bocci

Protection from Red means it has shroud against Red spell, it prevents all red damage, red creatures can't block it.

Earthquake won't kill it.
However, if a spell makes damage can't be prevented, then Earthquake can kill it.

Jund aggro is the best type of Jund... It raped the PTQ's and basically all FNM's. So this is good against AGGRO. NO good jund decks use Fallout, banquet, and DEF. not dume-b.(Or fallout - bad cascade mechanics)

Maybe, but any good jund deck would sideboard fallout and if it was creature-less then they would probably run banquet and fleshbag marauder in the sideboard to.

First of all people who played jund decks at tournaments etc... are not at alll bad at magic. They've picked up on the fact that jund is a strong deck type, and the fact that you've made an ANTI - JUND deck shows that jund is very significant. I would suggest you think more carefully when you make sweeping statements like you have done. They make you look childish and ignorant.

Oh and btw earthquake will kill the creature, as it's not being targeted by the spell therfore it still affects the outlander. Check the ruling on protection if you don't believe me.

Protection negates damage from whatever particular color even if it is a blanket effect. Here's the rule

Protection

This ability is written as "Protection from (quality)." A creature with protection from a quality cannot be enchanted, equipped, blocked, or targeted by anything with that quality, and all damage that would be dealt by a source of that quality will be prevented unless the damage can't be prevented (e.g. a creature with protection from red cannot be enchanted by red enchantments, blocked by red creatures, targeted by red spells and abilities, or take damage from red sources, barring exceptions which explicitly state otherwise).

How is any top tier deck original? The best decks are copied and tweak slightly and played in the pro tour. there's no real originality in the pro tour there's maybe four decks that performed well in states, Elf Wave, U/W control, U/B control and Koth Red. Those decks are the decks that win so that's what is played. There's no room for originality if you want to win.

Jund is a vey powerful archtype, so watch what you say.

If you look at the statistics jund is dominant in the standard format, becasue it's a powerful mid-range deck which utilizes card advantage to great effect. To be honest people who dislike jund do so because they don't understand why it's goodor are jealous.

look at the statistics: jund's win percentage on average.

Standard Dredge: 82%**
Vampires: 72%**
Turbo Fog: 68%
URW Control: 67%
Knightfall: 66%**
Bant: 65%
Naya Lightsaber: 64%
Emeria's Pledge: 53%
Boros Bushwhacker: 50%
Nissa Monument: 50%
Red Burn: 47%
Grixis Control: 35%
4 Color Seas: 22%**

Even naya lightsaber which was meant to defeat jund once and for all, didn't work that well!!

Standard Dredge (82% , 9-2)**
The explanation here is simple: Jund does not give Standard Dredge enough time to set up its pieces before it can go off. It takes a lot of time to put enough cards in the graveyard for Crypt of Agadeem to do its thing, and although Jund isn't the most blistering of aggro decks out there, it certainly isn't slow enough to make a Crypt player feel comfortable. Jund mages who dedicate four Goblin Ruinblasters to the sideboard worsen things for Dredge in games two and three.

Vampires (72%, 21-8)**
Vampires tries to be a creature deck, but Jund excels at it. While the Vampires player spends little amounts of mana on cheap but efficient creatures, the Jund guy pays slightly more mana for big and more efficient creatures. Traditionally, in a quick beatdown versus midrange matchup, the beatdown deck sneaks the first few points of damage in but gets stuffed by increasingly large blockers; eventually, those blockers turn into attackers, and the midrange deck triumphs. The Vampires versus Jund matchup sticks true to this generalization, as black's removal spells are not sufficiently powerful to make that short-term advantage last long enough.

Turbo Fog (68%, 13-6)
Although not statistically significant due to the smaller number of matchups observed, this has to be greatly concerning for a Turbo Fog player. After all, the deck's strategy is to stall forever using many Fog effects it has available until it assembles the cards it needs to finish off the game. However, all of those Howling Mines also beef up Jund's offerings. Sure, the Turbo Fog player will stall for a very, very long time. But eventually they skip a beat, and that is usually when Jund goes in for the kill. Turbo Fog will likely only get worse as time goes on and people are universally aware of the deck, which denies the Fogger any surprise bonus.

UWR Control (67%, 8-4)

This one has me a little puzzled. UWR Control wins only four times in twelve games against Jund…but UW Control takes five of six games from Jund. I am open to hearing plausible theories to explain that, but in the meantime I am going to want more data. After all, there are only twelve observations for UWR and six for UW. It's not just something awful about this mix of colors, either—URW went 38-35 against the rest of the field.

Knightfall (66%, 35-18)**
Like Jund, Knightfall attempts to be a midrange deck in Standard. While it has plenty of success against the rest of the format, it seems to have one hiccup here. My explanation is that Jund is simply better at being a midrange deck than Knighfall. That is, Jund's spells are more powerful card-for-card, which cripples the guy not playing red. Terminate is the MVP here, as there can be some huge tempo swings when Knightfall taps out for a big monster and Jund simply turns two lands sideways and kills it. The result is statistically significant as well, the last of the statistically good matchups for Jund.

BantAggro(65%, 11-6)
Nissa's Monument decks fair decently versus Jund because their mana critters allow them to get out to a fast start that Jund may never catch up to. Although the number of mana accelerators will vary depending on which Bant deck you look at, they still aren't enough to speed the deck by Jund. The issue seems to be that while Bant focuses on playing efficient creatures, Nissa's Monument has splashy spells that can end the game individually. In contrast, Bant's creatures eventually lose out to Jund and its semblance of card advantage, which produced this result.

NayaLightsaber(64%, 14-8)
Patrick Chapin says that Naya Lightsaber has an edge over Jund, but that statement seems questionable given the results here. If Naya actually won 55% of the time, this result would be significant at 90%; if Naya actually won 60% of the time, this result would be statistically significant at 95%. (Chapin does not elaborate on what he means by “an edge,” so I listed both.) Lightsaber will still get along just fine in a metagame tuned to beat Jund, but don't expect to be winning this matchup regularly.

Emeria's Pledge(53%, 8-7)
Although there were only fifteen observations, I was still impressed to see Emeria's Pledge hold its own against Jund. Pledge can win in one of three ways: getting Emeria online and overwhelming Jund, sticking a Baneslayer Angel, or just a pure creature rush against a slow moving Jund draw. Wise Jund players counteract at least the first two by not waiting around to finish the game and by targeting their removal spells appropriately. We will see how the numbers change as I gather more observations.

Boros Bushwhacker (50%, 30-29)
When the premier aggro decks of the format square off, apparently there is no clear winner. I can offer three explanations. First, unlike Zombies, Boros Bushwhacker's creatures can still be sizeable in the late game, which keeps more of its cards relevant for longer. Second, fetching two creatures with Ranger of Eos grants Bushwhacker the ability to wave out Jund's more traditional one-creature-at-a-time philosophy. Finally, having burn in the late game reduces Bushwhacker's need to deal all 20 damage in the early game; instead, it can get in a lot early, stall out the game for a while, and then win off of drawn burn spells. So if you refuse to play Jund, at least Boros Bushwhacker is a legitimate second choice.

Jund (50%, 83-83)
If you can't beat them, join them. Unsurprisingly, the Jund mirror is a 50/50 split. Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning that the Jund versus Jund matchup is the most frequent in Standard by a lot, so you absolutely must understand the mirror match if you are going to play this at a tournament.

NissaMonument(50%, 10-10)
Whereas one of Boros Bushwhacker's strength is in drawing a burn spell to finish games, Standard's elf deck for the year can randomly win games by dropping Eldrazi Monument and going crazy. Nissa also benefits from mana acceleration; while Jund is playing one land at a time, the Monument deck can get some really explosive starts off the backs of Llanowar Elves and Noble Hierarch. Jund also has problems removing Garruk, Nissa, and the monument without Maelstrom Pulse, which the Jund player would have preferred hitting a fat creature otherwise. Consequently, you can play Nissa Monument without having to be terrified of the Jund matchup.

Red Burn(47% 18-20)
The story here seems to be much the same as with Boros Bushwhacker, except you are trading larger creatures in the long game with bigger creatures that swing only once. This matchup is pretty boring since it basically involves the burn player racing the Jund to 20, with the Jund mage trying to preserve his life total just long enough for a fatty to take over the game. You should not be concerned that the 47% is slightly lower than with Boros Bushwhacker, as the result is not in the least statistically significant.

Note: Red Burn decks that splashed white for Ajani Vengeant when 3-3. These matchups were not included in the previous statistic.

Grixis Control(35%, 11-20)
Jund's midrange advantage in the Vampires matchup comes back to haunt it here. Although Jund has a bunch of good creatures and Garruk, Grixix Control has a bunch of good spells topped off by Cruel Ultimatum. Provided that Grixis can hold off Jund in the early to midgame (which happens more often than not), Jund is pretty much screwed going into the late game. Hence this result, which would be statistically significant at the 90% level if only I rounded up a decimal.

Spread ‘Em (22%, 4-14)
Perhaps it should not be much of a surprise that Spread ‘Em finds so much success in this match. After all, Jund has a finicky mana base for an aggro deck and has really color–intensive costs to most of its spells. Spreading Seas directly attacks this weakness by taking out a color and benefiting from virtual card advantage. (Never mind that Spreading Seas draws a card upon hitting play to boot.) Credit Gerry Thomson for the tricky deck design, combining a ton of cascade cards that are guaranteed to eventually flip over a land enchantment. And the statistically significant result shows that this unlikely to be a fluke

firstly it does not automatically make you bad at magic if you play jund, this is ignorant and people will play it because it's a strong deck but has a weak mana base and is subject to nasty cards loke stag, celestial cards etcc.

3. I very much doubt about what you said about the fog deck is true, it wins 90 percent of time, do you expect anyone who is good at standard to believe that ?

I just read all of the comments and I've got to say, Puffermad might be one of the most stereotypical Jund players I've ever seen. Not only is he unoriginal for playing Jund, but he cements his inability to be creative and original by copy and pasting someone else's statistical data and argument. What an amateur.

0

IF im not mistaken.... Mr Puffermad has said or done the following above:

Called someone or a group of people "Ignorant": 4 times

Given warnings of ignorance, about watching what you say or looking like an idiot: 6 times.

Used big words in an attempt at grandilooquence(I know big words too): 12 times.

And im sorry but i agree with half the people on here. People need to be original. I wanted to build a standard deck a while back and ya know what i built? U/G Landfall. I am completely against stereotypicalness and Simulacra decks. Original is always better no matter what the statistics say.

( i mean no offense to any new players who got a jund starter deck or are using it as their first deck. This is directed to the people who have been playing for years and never devoted any time to creating and fine tuning a deck by himself or herself)

Ok the reason people netdeck, is because those particular decks they are copying, are very good. The player who uses a 'rogue' deck, a homebrewed deck in any big tournament (pro tour etc....) usually loses dramatically. To brekak into the standard metagame, you have to be very, very good. The reason people use jund, vampires, UWR control etc is because it wins and is succesful.

original is better in a way. However, when you play in an important tournament you have to know what decks your coming up against, and you need to have researched the most common deck archetypes etc... and phisicall test many of them in order to achieve success.

You ask any competitive player and they will agree, originality will only get you so far. I play competitively and have done very well in tournaments, so don't call me an amateur GreenLantern, just becasue i play the dominant deck in standard. which people have picked up on, and win with.

Yes but if we all start copying each other decks then who is going to be making the decks we copy? i havent Netdecked my entire life and dont intend to. Look, go ahead and play pro. Im playing and supporting my local card shop for all i care pro tour can beat me down all thye want. I watched a Power 9 deck fall earlier today to a less than 10 dollar deck. MTG is for fun and if your playing against a deck thats the same as the last ten or twenty decks youve played then wheres the fun?

Magic is getting way to serious people. Whatever happened to the casual players who think of concepts out of cards in their collections instead of Googling "Pwn Deck"?

oh and btw... STANDARD ISNT THE ONLY TYPE
I dont play in tournaments other than Vintage

And please do not brush me off by attempting to assert your "Superior intellect". Go ahead and say im Ignorant and Childish. YOur argumnent against everyone seems to be that they obviously are nowhere near the intellectual level of you therefore anything you say is correct and you are superior, and that they are no longer correct by you stating the are incorrect. I believe now is the time to say YOU DONT KNOW ME!

Just thought ide throw this out there... My U/G landfall RAPED Jund a few minutes ago.

The reason people netdeck as i have already mentioned irrelevant, is to not just to use a particularly good deck, it's to understand how that deck wins, and what decks are strong in that particular match - up etc....I regularly have netdeck sessions with other people, so we can get a strong feel for the metagame, it also allows to to construction of a decent sideboard. If you ever want to do well in big tournaments, its a very good idea to go through this process.

I play competitively ok, theres no problem with that, it's the way i have fun!! In every game of magic i always aim to win, and i tend to do so.

However, every once in a while i will build my own standard deck and playtest it to death vs the netdecks, trust me to break into any metagame, whether it's type 1 or type 2, it's hard work.

ok your landfall deck raped jund, well done. have you actually given consideration to any other other decks in this, format or are you stupid like cakins, and seem to think jund is the only deck in standard right now.

I could build a stupid deck like cakins now, and beat jund, but lose to every other type of deck.

IQ is dodgy - The intelligence quotient test only covers a small aspect of intelligence, therefore one who does well in such a test is not necessarily a genius or intelligent. And you have no idea of my age, i could be younger than you for all you know.

YOu know... For all you know is a very silly phrase.

I could be right outside your window watching your every move for all you know O.o

See. And ANNNNNNNY way you obviously are not younger than me because otherwise you would have SAID you were younger than me instead of implying you might.

And if you DO play pro as you have implied above, as far as i know the youngest person who mattered in pro tour was 15.

We wana talk about net decks, and making new decks? "The player who uses a 'rogue' deck, a homebrewed deck in any big tournament (pro tour etc....) usually loses dramatically." BULL SHIT. Remember in the last standard, all the different elf combo decks, or rev. control decks? And even tokens... Once again, let me emphasize this... BULL SHIT. Lets look at the top decks of that season. One being... CASCADE SWANS! So original, that it would have been impossible to steal from someone else. And in this standard, who I might add also made cascade swans... Joel Calafell, bringing us... JACERATOR! Who, in quote, "Ruled the tables [at worlds]". So you try to tell me that new decks don't work? I will give you the same so called "Ignorant", or something that even I could call a blatant response... BULL SHIT. That is all.

Oh yeah Puffer. This whole page is not devoted to you. Will you just leave and stop ruining this post? This deck is by no means good against anything but Jund, or something with some of those colors, which most decks do have soooo... Idk... Just leave already alright? If you wana play Jund with your netdeck buddies whatever, but you wont win at my FNMs...

@irrelevant You really are an idiot, why in hell would you be watching me, thats just a very weird thing to say.You probabally don't even live in the same country as me. Do you watch many people outside thier houses. Why the hell aint you in prison, ya poof.

No i ant gonna leave and by no means have you won this argument. Tbh the rogue deck does usually lose btw. You look cakins, at the number of rogue decks that do poorly in standard and you wouldn't dare argue with me. You look at the statistics for the number of rogue decks that have failed, and you will shut up. Seriously you are still making the same mistakes, your speaking before actually thinking.

i think its great when the rogue deck does well, cuz it brings something new and exciting to the game but it doesn't happen often. Sure, plenty of decks do breakthrough, but absolutely loads don't and thats it.

You look at standard right now, the decks are consistently similar, well now that worldwakes out that will change, but they've been the same for ages. Occasionally one will break through, but it's not a common occurence.

Yes but just because many people fail doesnt mean the one who succedes matters.

Case and point: Lightbulb. Are you saying that out of the thousand tries that edison did to make it, the one where he created the lightbulb doesnt matter because he failed 999 times. I hate using profanity but ima join cakins on this one: BULL SHIT

Also, one other reason that many rogue decks don't preform well, is honestly because they are not original enough.

"Ok guys! We have seen Jund do good in Worlds... How about a Naya deck? What about a control deck using Sorin instead of Chandra?"

We see a lot of this. Not original. You might think that there is a lot of originality in those decks, but there isn't. Also, if you see a new deck at your local FNM that is original, but doesn't do good, thats different from a Pro Tour, or Worlds... And also: Worldwake will not change anything. There is barely anything good coming out of it...

Well yes if your trying to break into the game with a new deck, you'll have to playtest it to death, to see how it survives against a variety of matchups. Of course, this is going to to take alot of time and effort to do this, but it's certainly going to be worth it, if you can create a tournament deck.

Plus i love trying to create new decks myself, and go about this process alot:-). So i'm not unoriginal

What i am saying is, that although processes like this do create some good decks, some of the time, these ideas are discarded, as a particularly important tournament looms, and players run out of time, or testing results are inconclusive, players will look to play well known, and poweful netdecks. E.g. jund, vamps, UWR, red deck wins etc...

Wow. This deck INSPIRED ME. Look on my profile and you'll find anti-decks all over it. I am still taking requests, btw.

As for the above flame war, here's my philosophy:
I base my deck ideas after previously made deck types along with my own ideas from spoilers. The decks you see on my profile are theories, experimental deck types, and possible gamebreakers. Do I have most the decks on my profile? No. However, I make them -relatively- budget. That means no Mind-Sculptors or any other hyper-expensive cards in most of them.
Being original makes you a better player.

Also, Like #200 FTW
