How to Play

I've become concerned with the amount of decks going unloved in this community. It's great that everyone loves budget decks so much, but I see way too many cool and interesting, attention deserving decks go completely ignored, so here's what I propose:Comment on any deck that has no previous comments on it (Just liking a deck won't count, but by all means feel free to like, also!), and post the link to it in the comments here, and I will comment on THREE of your least commented decks in return. The comment can be just about anything, from a helpful suggestion to just a freindly "This is cool, I like how this deck does X!" will suffice!

So, click over to the unloved page, start giving some love, and I will return to the community by commenting on THREE of all participater's decks! Happy supporting!

There are almost no actual good decks on the Vault anymore, just shitty budget decks and articles without any cards in them, circle jerking for a like.

I personally do like to see budget decks (cuz that's the way i play). But i want to see some new crazy combos! people keep recreating the same idea. It's feeling very unoriginal. I only come here rly to put my decks in the cloud in case if i somehow lose my deck or some cards in my deck (via stealing or water damage or whatever) that way i can find and replace the cards easier.

Agreed BlackRazz, it's cool to help out young 'uns and those who don't have extra money to create neat and effective decks, but there needs to be appreciation for talent. I've got three or four decks that win in four turns or less regularly, and then have little to no support at all. I've seen countless constructed decks that are super impressive, but no one's interested in them!

Jesus H. Christ.
BnE, can you go post that to every deck on this site!
Finally, someone voicing my same concerns!

Just because a deck is super cheap, or super easy to recommend changes to, or super easy to understand doesn't mean it should get 50 likes!!!

Nor does it mean a super awesome, well rounded, complex, intimidating (in that it may use older cards or difficult to understand combos) deck should be overlooked.

But it happens everyday on this site.
The guy that originally told me about this site. That is why he left. I am still here. But he left. Simply because he said, "a bunch of super crappy, 1 win condition decks get on the hot page. And budget decks that are budget just for the sake of being Budget are hot decks. Good, solid decks do not get any support/likes."

He is right. So are you.

Can I get a hallelujah?

The hot page is 80% budget decks, 10% people posting decks with one card and an article in them, and 10% random combo shit that works almost never.

This isn't even a real Magic site anymore.

Yeah, i am posting on another deck. Saying basically the same thing as what you are PhyrexianPossum, and people are telling me to be positive. And that it doesn't matter if the combos do not work. lol.
I don't get it.

1
Posted 27 June 2014 at 02:31

Yea i literally use this site to brainstorm my own deck ideas, crunch numbers and take sample hands. Plus i use Tcgplayer to buy my decks. I stopped looking at other peoples decks quite some time ago for the same reasons you guys said. Its fuckin lame seeing some garb combo deck get praised as if it was some new tier one legacy tourney winner. Who wants to actually buy a deck, let alone play with a deck, that does one thing and one thing only, and if it doesn't work, it can't win? This site was popping when i first joined, now i just get shit when i make posts on crappy budgets and cheap trick decks for not "understanding" them.

Sorry BurtonErnie, not trying to turn this post into a ranting page, but i got happy when i saw people felt the same as i did.

2

Don't apologize, I feel the same exact way. Again, not knocking budget decks, they're a good idea, but there is some major talent and creativity here going unappreciated, and it just bums me out, which is why I made this article! Budget decks are incredible. A lot of my decks don't even have rares in them. I started a trend called Microdeck which is a 40 card singleton deck with one rare to be the centerpiece of the deck. The trend seems to have died out a little because people have found a way to completely break the format. I need help trying to fix it. Please?

2
Posted 27 June 2014 at 02:41

what was the break in the format? By the way I've seen your microdeck setup and i think it's awesome! Seems like the ultimate casual play format! i showed the guys i play with and we are all considering giving it a shot!

0
Posted 27 June 2014 at 05:40

the break is people using old cards that are technically commons but are a bajillion bucks and ruin shit like a steamroller. I think what i need is to make a banlist. Any advice?

0
Posted 27 June 2014 at 15:36

I don't think a ban list is necessary. Correct me if I'm wrong since you built this format but the way I see it is those people using those old school commons are completely missing the point of this format. The whole basis of the format is to make magic less viciously competitive and make it that fun casual card game it's supposed to be. It shouldn't be on you to change your format just because ppl are finding loopholes. I guarantee no matter what you do they'll still find ways to make vicious decks that are no fun to play against.

0
Posted 27 June 2014 at 19:43

I would say just limit what counts as common/uncommon. For instance, you could say every card must be a common or uncommon that has an average listed price of $2.00 or less (according to MtG Vault or TCGplayer) except for one "rare" card, which can be any card costing more than the $2.00.
There's no need for a ban list, I think, because if someone wants to use a $15.00 common as their "rare", I don't see much problem with it. As long as the other 39 cards are under a certain price, it will remain a budget format.

thinking bout letting conspiracies be legal. Hmmmmm... I think it should count toward your rare card. What do you guys think?

0
Posted 28 June 2014 at 04:09

Hmm. I don't quite have enough experience with conspiracies yet to judge, but I wouldn't be strictly opposed to it.

0
Posted 28 June 2014 at 04:22

There would need to be a limit on the number of conspiracies allowed. Since you begin the game with them in the command zone, theoretically a guy could bring in twenty "Double Stroke"s, shock you, and copy it twenty times for the win. Something along the lines of only one of each or two of each, maybe even only five conspiracies total or something.

0
Posted 30 June 2014 at 19:39

Would conspiracies count in the 40-card exact decklist? Or maybe you can say 40 card deck PLUS up to (x) conspiracies. Maybe you can rule "Conspiracies are allowed on top of the 40 card deck, but each player must have the same number of conspiracies at the start of the game." This way, people CAN have 20+ conspiracies, but they can only use 2 if the opponent only has/wants to use 2. Something like that?

0
Posted 30 June 2014 at 20:01

That's not a bad idea, but I'm pretty sure the card ruling on conspiracies was that they start sprays from your deck, thus not being included in your deck. But a general rule of who wants to up the anty and everyone plays with 2,000 defender tokens on their first upkeep each sounds good to me, with the lesser number taking priority over a higher number.

0
Posted 30 June 2014 at 20:31

I think I would say the best ruling would be:
"Before the game begins, players may come to an agreement on a number of conspiracies to use (in addition to the normal 40-card deck). If the players do find an agreeable number, that many conspiracies may be used by each player; otherwise, conspiracies will not be legal in that game."

0
Posted 30 June 2014 at 20:38

The conspiracies will be singleton like with the rest of the deck. It doesn't count to the 40 card limit. I'm thinking one conspiracy per deck.

Absolutely, yes, people should focue less on the "hot" decks (they got enough attention already) and more on the unloved ones. In fact I think it would be better for this site if the unloved decks would be default view, not the hot ones.

BTW, I offer a service for deck critique, all you have to do is drop a line here:
http://www.mtgvault.com/puschkin/decks/puschkin-please-help-me/

Well, that isn't entirely true: You should actually do a little bit more, add a proper deck description, add information like intended format, casual/tourney, 1-on-1/multiplayer etc. Some times, a deck is unloved and stays unloved because it is an incoherent mess or secretly genious but incomprehensible without a description.

I typically only comment on decks that get no attention, mostly because I think the number of budget decks on this site has gotten out of hand, and the comments are worthless. That's just my opinion though, maybe it's what people want, but the introduction of the 'hot page' as the default instead of the 'new' page has been irritating since it's inception.

I love the idea!

I have been a user since 2010 and have not seen much action on here since then. When I first started being a vault lover I had some awesome deck ideas with no one to talk to about them because no one could afford the game. When I startd posting on here my ideas and got feedback it helped my understanding of the game and the mechanics involved to now be able to make an invincible stuffy doll.

To the active users of the Vault I thank you!!

as i always say. i love helping people in the community to build decks. i never really like commenting on the popular decks since they already either know what they are doing or someone else already said it (and sometimes is even get a snarky response from people that feel they know better than me and their deck is perfect). so i usually stick to the decks that are new and have yet to be commented upon.

the deck i decided to make some suggestions is a type that is very dear to me. an extort deck ( http://www.mtgvault.com/dsouth/decks/extortion/ ).

Thank you for starting this page
I feel the reason for it, at least as far as i can see, is that they changed the defaults on the site
when i first started here, if i clicked decks it would automatically go to the "New" page, for a while now when i do it, it goes right to "Hot"
I noticed an instant drop off in comments when this happened

I've offered advice on enough decks, but everyone likes to build budget, and everything that I'd say to put in is not budget. Which makes getting advice on my legacy/modern decks difficult because nobody bothers to even look since none of them are considered "budget"

0
Posted 01 July 2014 at 17:14

Legacy...what is budget for Legacy? 500 bucks?

I have several Legacy decks for 100 bucks or cheaper. They can't win tourneys. But they can win casual games. That is the thing with Legacy/Vintage...they see a tag for it, and think, "There is a deck that is running hundred dollars cards." And lots of people do not have experience with 100 dollar cards.

But you do have a point...there are great cards that are budget...but if you see a 30 dollar card...there usually is a good reason it is 30 bucks.

0
Posted 01 July 2014 at 17:27

Yes. There is always a reason. Like Moat is over 300 dollars, because it shuts down half the decks in the format if not more.

0
Posted 01 July 2014 at 17:30

And there is the problem. If you are 15 years old (like a lot of people on here) you don't have 300 dollars for one card.

And if you are like me, married with children, you can't afford 300 dollar cards.

Next best thing, build a solid budget deck that can, maybe 1 out of 10 games, beat the Moat deck. :)

Regardless, checked out a few of your decks and sent some love.

http://www.mtgvault.com/martianshark/decks/unhinged-t3-win/

I thought of a great idea, but this deck beat me to it.

Using Wordmail (enchanted creature gets +1/+1 for each word in its name) and Our Market Research Shows that Players Like Really Long Card Names So We made this Card to have the Absolute Longest Card Name Ever Elemental.

Basically, "Our Market" is a creature with 25 words in it's title.
He is 3 mana.
So, you cast him and then next turn cast Wordmail (for 1 mana) on "Our Market" 27/27!!!

You can do that, with mana ramp, to where you can get off a Turn 3 win.

Turn 1: Forest. Play Llanowar elves (or bop)
Turn 2: Plains. Play "Our Market"
Turn 3. Plains. Play Wordmail on "Our Market" and now you have a 27/27 on the third turn. If you want, play something like Stave Off or Faith's Shield, giving him protection, and attack unblocked!!!

Again, this guys version is better than what i had in mind. Wish I would of come up with it!!!

Time to go find some cool unloved decks.

-1
Posted 07 July 2014 at 16:29

Why are people posting their own decks here? That's not the point of this, the point was for you to go to the unloved deck section, find a deck or 2 that you like, like them and/or leave a comment, then post that deck here so that others can view it, THEN the Author of this "Deck" will comment on your decks when he has time to get to it. You're not supposed to be posting your own decks, that defeats the purpose of him doing this. Someone with 10 rep should go through and downvote every single person that posted their own decks. Just sayin.

I can't speak for others, but I for one offer/offered advice on many decks before and after this came to be. I simply posted the links of decks I would like prefer the critique to go towards.

nice to see this but its sad you have to bribe people to comment on decks and that people comment on budget stuff all day long. The problem is so many budget decks flood this site that people looking for help never have a chance. I know i've inquired on some commander decks i've made for help but then 2 hrs later my deck is 4 pages deep and no one would ever bother to dig that deep. Glad to see this and maybe sometime we can see more than budget imo junk on the hot list.

Since pretty much all of my decks have no comments, I figured I'd give you some direction. Most of my decks are budget, and I'm focusing on Goblins, Sliver Combo, and Pyromancing the Stone, though Ultimate Sacrifice could probably use some work. In the end, though, it's up to you.

Just a notice guys...people, are getting downvoted (not by me) for wanting people to look at their decks IF YOU DO NOT PROVE THAT YOU ARE ALSO HELPING OTHER PEOPLE.

So, with that in thought, I might suggest you only post your deck link if you also post a deck link TO A DECK YOU HAVE HELPED/COMMENTED ON/LIKED.

Good luck!

As i said, the way Magic Vault works with Hot Decks right now, this deck will be on the Hot Page forever, and keep getting comments. Meanwhile, people like me, will get their hot decks removed over and over, and get removed before they should be. I have had decks removed, from the Hot Page, less than 2 weeks old. Meanwhile, this deck keeps getting likes/comments.

Go figure.

Fundamentally, I think this has just become too big of a beast for one user to handle. Respect to BurtonErnie for trying this, but the way this thread has exploded has put the mockers on it actually achieving its intended purpose. Speaking as someone who has never had a hot deck, and who is a avowed casual Magic player, it was a great thing to see someone trying to send some love to the casual decks, the budget decks, the stupid combo decks that'll only work 1 in 10 times, because there's a hell of a lot of fun in this system of ours to be found there.

In short, a lofty goal, but unrealistically executable.

No, It can be done.
I did it.

http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/static-ability-challenge/

I am still doing it. I kept up with everybody. Over 75 decks commented on. BUT my deck got kicked off the Hot Page. And this deck has not been kicked off the Hot Page. And my Static Ability deck has almost double the comments this deck has.

Magic Vault is just flawed. He stopped commenting on all of your decks, but his deck is still getting likes.
I kept commenting on all of your decks, and my deck got kicked off the Hot Page. So..yeah, it is a big beast to handle. But it is possible.

No, the sad part is that this deck is still getting likes while i had several of my decks be kicked off from the Hot Page because I posted more Hot Decks. You can only have 2 hot decks. He isn't responding to anyone's decks. Even if you do it by the rules he suggests.
I am owed like 20 or 30 views.
So are a lot of other people.
I wish this deck would be taken down.

It keeps getting likes/views based on an empty promise.
Weak.

No, I had my Challenge.
It got taken down from the Hot Page because I made another Hot Deck (If you have 2 Hot Decks, and make another Hot Deck...the oldest of the 1st two Hot Decks get taken down).

So...while my deck got taken down....this deck stays up!!!
I don't get it.
One of the flaws of Magic Vault, I guess.

Not sure why the hell Magic Vault does not take this deck down!
It doesn't deserve to keep getting likes/views/comments.

This entire deck IS BASED ON AN EMPTY PROMISE.

This was my Challenge Deck in which I KEPT MY PROMISE TO RESPOND EVEN THOUGH MAGIC VAULT took it down.

Again, go figure:

http://www.mtgvault.com/jessie/decks/static-ability-challenge/

I responded to over 75 decks!
Way more then this guy ever did...and again, my deck was taken off the Hot Page and this Want deck comments? deck is still at the top.

Ah, I see your frustration. I don't really see a need for this "deck" to be taken down though. I neglected to read the comments and see he wasn't responding anymore. If I had done so, I wouldn't have posted. So it's my fault and my waste of time which, while somewhat regrettable, isn't that big a deal. Hey, at least one guy got a comment from me, and I am going to go and comment more.

Sounds like Magic Vault didn't take your deck down, I can see it if I click on your name. Looks like it is merely not featured as Hot anymore. Since you still follow through with your challenge, I can see why it would be frustrating for this deck to be featured and not yours.

In the end, this deck is supposed to encourage people to go out and comment. While he may not be living up to his promise, I think the attitude he is encouraging is a good one.

I meant, it got taken down from the Hot Pages and his did not.

It is a sham.

I ended up with 20 likes for helping 75 people....and this deck has almost 100 likes and he might of looked at 10 decks, at best.

Again, a rip off.

I'm only a little upset that he didn't come through on his part of the bargain by commenting and liking any of my decks. but on the other hand he did successfully get a lot of people to check out and spread ideas on the unloved page. something that i think we all can agree is a good thing and should be done more often. the more frequently we all comment on and like decks, the more frequently we will get comments and likes in return. share the ideas and love of mtg

Exactly! Ever since seeing this "deck" I have tried to at least comment on one deck a day. For me, I have taken this situation of hoping to receive "promised" deck comments and turned it into something positive by commenting when I can.
