Midrange Black Standard

by Betogribeiro on 31 July 2014

Main Deck (60 cards)

Sideboard (12 cards)

Creatures (5)

Submit a list of cards below to bulk import them all into your sideboard. Post one card per line using a format like "4x Birds of Paradise" or "1 Blaze", you can even enter just the card name by itself like "Wrath of God" for single cards.

How to Play

Some cards that work well together:

Fate Unraveler + Master of The Feast or Whip of Erebos - Master of The Feast make Fate Unraveler cause more damage, and Whip of Erebos make you gain life of the damage caused by Fate Unraveler

Mogis + Whip of Erebos - Like Fate Unraveler, you gain life of every damage cause by Mogis

Athreos + Brain Maggot or Gray Merchant - Brain Maggot and Gray Merchant are cards that the opponent really don't wanna see back to the game, and when you need you can bring the Gray Merchant back with Whip of Erebos

Drown in Sorrow is good to hold on Aggro Decks
Stain the Mind is good to get rid of big creatures, planeswalkers, gods and any card that may be a trouble for you

Deck discussion for Midrange Black Standard

Yep, lots of good interactions here. I've had loads of fun with Whip and Gary, and love the potential of Unraveler and Master of the Feast.

Do you find 3 Drowns to be too much in main, or does that tend to work out for you? I've had a hard time getting the main/sideboard balance right with it.

I live in a small town, many people play with Aggro here so it's kind necessary, but i will test other cards

Well then it probably makes sense. Got to plan for your play environment.

The only worry I'd have is hitting your own Brain Maggots, especially without Athreos out yet, but that may be a necessary evil if you're staring down a bunch of aggro decks.

Have you considered Thoughtseize as a workaround for that? I love Maggot, but Seize MIGHT make more sense here.

Yes, i do, but i don't have Thoughtseize, who has, don't want to trade and it's kind of expensive for me right now

Sweet! Seems like a very good deck, I may take that into consideration with mine :)

Duress makes a good replacement for thoughtseize if you don't have any.

Made some changes on sideboard to turn the deck more Aggro when necessary
Thinking to run ulcerate on main deck

Ulcerate will be very relevant, you should sideboard it in.

i was thinking put ulcerate on main deck e Drown in Sorrow on sideboard

It depends on how aggressive you play the deck. In its current state, I would leave in Drown in Sorrow and just side in ulcerate if you are getting overwhelmed too early.

I really like that gods but to turn them in creatures is needed 7 devotion , is bit too much... but they combine well. Good deck

Indeed, but Athreos and Mogis are cards that are good just to have in play even if they aren't creatures and except by Brain Maggot and Erebos, my permanents have BB on cost that easily make me hit the necessary devotion

Well, if you're gonna put most of the high-rankers on the price-quality ratio black standard cards in one deck, you're bound to get a pretty decent deck :p I'm sure it's effective, but I'm missing some flair though. Then again, I prefer making themed or unconventional decks, like a mono green self-mill graveyard deck or stuff like that :-)

I like to be creative, it's fun to play with a unique deck made all by yourself, you already help me once with my GW Deck (http://www.mtgvault.com/betogribeiro/decks/karametras-followers/) that works very well, but sometimes, to be competitive you have to inspire in other competitive decks, get a good idea and adapt for your enviroment, this is be creative too

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this isn't a fun or competitive deck! I actually completely agree with you, that it's this sort of decks that give you the edge needed to win, ànd to win consistently. Assimilation of the most effective elements of winning decks gets you very far!

I'm just a different sort of player, I prefer flair over victory :-) And if I win, all the better :-) I had this discussion before with a friend of mine who's very good at perfecting decks and making them as efficient as possible, which is a worthy goal. But not for a stubborn dude like me :-)

Apologies if you took offence!

I don't take offence, i just like to have a healthy discussion about this, i think every one have a moment in magic that think "i wanna win always or just wanna have fun?", i play a tournament with a constellation deck made by myself and has my ass kicked all day long, but i made great duels, but next tournament i wanna go for win

I hear ya! I think the trick is to find the right balance between fun and ambition. It's tricky, but very rewarding once you get in that sweet spot :-)

I like the deck. The only thing I question is the Drown in Sorrow. On top of their creatures it weakens your's too. If you end up going against red burn it makes your creatures easier to kill. But I may just be seeing this from the wrong angle. :) Great deck.

That mogis seems bit off in that deck? same as the stain the mind?

I get the idea that's around mogis but that's bit too weird in my opinion you could do better if you just take the red out of the deck.

Stain the mind if it works around your local games it's fine, but there's a lot of better ways to deal with creatures or walkers like the hero's downfall.

and for the toil/trouble remove em and use underworld connection's for the extra cards.

Mogis and Stain the Mind are cards that make the deck more controlling
Mogis and Indulgent Tormentor in game make the opponent sacrifice his creatures or pay life, that give me a huge advantage for any of he choose and i see Stain the Mind like a deicide, you can exile a card and all copies and this will not bother you anymore, you can really take away the win condition of opponent's deck with just one card

you might take 4 copies of something out but i doupt it hurts your oponent that much?
Only thing i see good at it is that it lets you look at the whole deck and his hand.
but i havent played this deck so i dont have right to call it bad if it works it does.
i would not even be suprised if i build something like this.

That's a nice red deck wins... it would be a shame if you suddenly didn't have any madcap skills, or fanatics.
That's some nice blue white control you've got there, it'd be a shame if you didn't have any elspeths, or aetherlings.

it's cruel but the decks with those cards win games...
but in a small town ppl playing magic they are not needet.

??? What? I'm not entirely sure I understand. I live in a small area and there are plenty of quality players that do metagame. When someone drops a temple of enlightenment on turn 1 you're going to see an elspeth. When someone drops a mountain and a rakdos cackler turn 1 you're going to see madcap skills. It is all dependent on what local players run.

cackler dont always mean madcap. ( red devo )
and theres also u/w decks that dont play elspeth. ( heroic agro )

i think that Couch312 means is all decks have a card that give you the win condition, that will unbalance the game for one side, so you have two options, try to have the win condition before your opponent or try to take away the win condition from your opponent until you have the cards to win the game (Aggro or Control), Stain the Mind it's the second option
