My Tourney Midrange/Aggro Gruul deck. Will be taking this to upcoming tournaments so I will be doing some fine tuning and testing but this is as close to the finished product as I'm going to get to at the moment. This deck handles Black Devotion as the Bow can stabilize for me nicely. Stormbreath is the Esper deck killer, and Purphoros beats over other aggro decks, as I'm doing damage as creatures enter the field, plus the ability to buff all at once is a great upside.

I have this deck on MTGO so if you wish to vs me with this deck my username is "Hyno86". I'm usually on in the evenings Australian time. I want to get as much testing for this deck as possible. This deck has proven to be strong against Turbo fog decks, Gate decks, Esper decks, mono blue & mono black devotion decks, as well as mirror matches. So if you have one of these decks and you either want to test it yourself, or think it will go well against mine, you are most welcome to.Weakest against faster aggro decks and apparently mono red which I unfortunately discovered the other day....These are the decks I want to test against more, as this seems to be the only missing issue. Perhaps I need some lifegain or to be faster aggro myself, I don't know until I do more testing.

In this deck, you don't really have permanents with red mana symbol in them, at least not enough, so Purphoros is a little irrelavent here...I'd drop that god, also the Bow, Reverly should both be sideboard, no Disciple in sideboard, rather another Mistcutter Hydra, from the main deck I'd take out 1 Stormbreath Dragon & add 1 more Mortars... ...even tough Magma Jet is nice with Domri, I''d cut that too, add another Mortars & another Nykthos... ...you have 16 lands that could produce green mana & 14 red, yet all you need is 13 green & 12 red, so I suggest you take out the Guildgate, 2 forest & 1 mountain, than add 2 more Nykthos & 2 Mutavault... ...than you'd have 4 Nykthos wich is perfect with the 3 Polukranos & 3 Mortars, also great with the sideboard Mistcutter Hydra & allowes you to cast Ruric early at times.......Overall, the deck looks nice dispite the fact that Purphoros is not a fitting one for this... ...if you want to avoid wipes before you could close the game with your creatures, you should try Hammer of Purphoros wich gives hate to your creatures & even in late-game, if you run out of stuff, you can rely on the tokens it makes... ...may be 2 in the sideboard, or 1 main & 1 side.......I'd also drop Plummet from the sides & rather use Arbor Colossus... ...drop Bramblecrush & that 1 Anger of the Gods as well, so you can add that 1-2 Hammer & another 1-2 Fade into Antiquity(now way more relavent than Bramblecrush)...Good luck! Here is the deck that I used last friday on FNM & under it, the deck I intend to try out this friday:http://www.mtgvault.com/poetmasterx/decks/armada-sent-back-to-aether/http://www.mtgvault.com/poetmasterx/decks/mortars-of-serenity/
Not taking out Purphoros, late game even mana dorks become a threat. He's there for the "ETB" effect and sometimes the pump. Hammer, took it out, no good for me here, and I really wanted to keep it. Get rid of the Bow? Are you kidding?? No freaking way, such a great stabiliser card, saved me many a times.. Take out a Stormbreath?? HA! Nope. Maybe 1 or 2 when I side but I'm keeping 4 of these suckers in here. I'd say AT LEAST 75% of the games I've won have been because of this guy. What I may end up doing is take out 1 Purphoros and throw in 1 Nylea. I had her in here and she wasn't too bad.I won't be dropping Bramblecrush or Anger, I will in fact be adding 2 Angers as they are good against faster aggro decks. and Bramblecrush removes Nykthos and Planeswalkers. I do agree with Revelry, I am currently playing around with the sideboard still, and I most likely will end up putting in another Mizzium for the Revelry and leaving 2 sided. Arbor I'm not too fond of, but it is an option I am aware of.I do agree with Disciple, I am toying with some lifegain options for the mono red decks. I might add 2 Gruul Charms back into the sideboard, they are great for getting by ground blockers, and sometimes Ashiok if she manages to get a large enough board presence, but that's rare.I also agree with another 1 Nykthos only, working on getting one more, which I will replace the gate with.Magma is great for knocking out other rampers or an early aggro starter. So on the fence on that one.Reasons for the Mutavault? I just can't see why is all. What I would like to know is I was thinking of throwing in a couple of Boros Charms into the side, for the board wipe protection and maybe even lethal damage pushing through. If I were to add one Temple of Triumph and with the Caryatids do you see it as a viable option? Thanks for your input.
What I really need is a card that will KILL Esper decks. I've got things to cover mirror matches, Mono red, aggro, Black and Blue Devotion, Turbo Fog, Gate Decks. Esper is still a pain in my ass. I can beat lower-skilled Esper players and Esper decks that aren't that strong, but a well made Esper deck being played by someone who knows what they're doing with it is near impossible. Plus it's batshit boring to play against!!
Against Esper, Mistcutter is pretty effective... ...yet your burn spells won't do much... ...that is really a bad matchup for Gruul... ...Ruric Thar is amazing against decks like these, so if you're really suffering against Esper, you should use a 3rd Ruric in the sideboard.......When up against Esper, you should use only 2 Polukranos, since against "ultimate"-control decks, it's not very effective, since the opponent playes very few creatures... ...may be Scullcrack would work against Sphinx's Revelation & a little against Obzedat...You don't really have many options for removal in Gruul, so AEtherling is gonna' be a problem, 'cuz you need many removal within a turn to take care of it & if the opponent has enough mana, than it's impossible to deal with it... ...you can only restrin it from attacking, or blocking temporarly...STormbreath is good in that matchup, tough with the Ultimate Prices & Doom Blades, I'm sure you've got mad how easily the opponent toke care of it time after time...Arbor Colossus is great, it can take care of Angel of Serenity(if the opponent playes it)...What I'd suggest is if you want to be ready for everything, than don't play Gruul & if you do, than make the ramp-Nykthos part of the deck complete, like Mihara did... ...it's the only thing you can race your opponent out with before he/she could wipe your stuff out... ...I'd use 1 more Domri.......I know, it's a bit more expensive & it's not what you've been up to, but Naya is so much better... ...it's resellient against every control deck with Voice of Resurgence, it playes Boros Reckoner & the whole deck is so much more agressive... ...you can even use Chained to the Rocks to get rid of bigger threats that Mortars & other burn spells could not deal with.......Good luck!
Yeah I know there isn't much I can do with Aetherling. What you said in the first 4 paragraphs I agree with and have done. I just recently played an Esper deck last night where I misplayed terribly. I should have skullcracked their Revelation then followed up with a stormbreath for the win. But I did not do that. Still, came second in the tournament so not so bad. I have been heavily considering turning this into a more Naya style deck. yes I would love one more Domri, a turn 2 Domri is always beneficial for me. A turn 3 Ruric Thar shuts down most decks, and has happened a few times. You reckon I should keep the Fade into Antiquity or don't worry about Gods and just go for the third ruric sided instead? I know I can't cover every deck but I can come pretty damn close. Considering Esper is the only matchup I'm having trouble with I'd say that's not too shabby. I also very rarely have to mulligan my first hand so I know the spread is alright. But if you're set on Arbor Colossus I'll swap em for Plummets and give it a go. I guess it helps with devotion too
Mainboarded one for a Polukranos and sided 2 for the plummets. Will see how they go.
If you have room for only 1 Fade into Antiquity, than it's not worth keeping it, so yeah, go with the 3rd Ruric!..Are anyone in your store playing USA, Bant, or Oros control? I think Bant could alsobe a bad matchup for you, tough not as drastically as Esper & people rarely playing it now, since it did not appear in any top-8 within the big leagues, tough actually, if you construct it well, it's better than Esper... ...Oros control is also rare, tough it happens... ...the places where I play, Oros is quite popular in standard now & is actually one of the strongest deck-types there is.......I've posted 2 decks here before in my 1st comment... ...1 is the Bant deck I run & the other is the USA control deck that I'll probably use this friday... ...tough I have an Oros deck I might want to try 1st...Here's the Oros midrange/control: http://www.mtgvault.com/poetmasterx/decks/whip-of-the-warleader/
I don't know what they will be playing till the day of the tournament. I'm expecting Esper, Black and Blue devotion, other Gruul and mono red aggro decks. And maybe gate decks. There may be a couple of USA, Oros and Junk decks too. I'm normally a Junk player myself but going for something different this time.Yeah I had a look at them. More interesting than Esper that's for certain... That Oros looks damn good too.
